Oh, it’s good to be back. Sidelined with an injured hand has been more limiting than not running the net. I’ve been working one-handed for a couple months now. Mindy W7ZAP, besides taking over ORCA NCS, has been doing most of the daily homestead chores too. Keeping the wood heater stoked and supplied is a 24/7 task in itself.

The band was actually better than most of the predictive propagation sites anticipated. Mindy might have done nearly as well with the weekly FLAMP exercise had she begun in MFSK-64. In MFSK-32, only one station missed one block. She filled that block in MFSK-16. It was an opportunity to change modes and see how it goes with all TXid’s off. No problems there.

Yet, the jury is still mulling the No- TXid experiment. Twice during net I had to chase the signal manually and missed the initial data. Following the net, Howard KB6NN related the same problem at his station. No TXid mode notice means no frequency notice . This may cause more bother than the 2.8sec TXid. I suspect other Ops were also chasing signals tonight and I’d like to hear your experience. Nearly all Amateur rigs drift a bit, some more than others. FLDIGI compensates for this very effectively. I’ve been combing thru the manual, looking to adjust AFC range and sensitivity. There may be a solution in fine tuning AFC. We’ll continue our experiment with TXid off. Please explore this issue and weigh in with your thoughts.

Nice work! to Clifford N0LKC and Doug KA7FOO for monitoring the net long enough to learn the routines before becoming active. Doug stayed around after net tonight and returned ex20 in FLAMP.

The net seems to be flowing better since we implemented the weekly FLAMP exercise. This exercise leverages practice with most FLAMP features as the return message is also sent in FLAMP. Now, I get to send lots of FLAMP REPORTS. Great practice for all of us.

RX: W1EEP UT

I want to Thank Mindy and each of you for sustaining the net when I could not. Mindy totally filled my roll and you continued working as a team. Without your engagement and support, there would be no ORCA. It’s been a pleasure to see the net continue as usual.

Dave W1HKJ, FLDIGI lead programmer, has released FMAMP v4.0.2. Download all FLDIGI apps:

Thanks for working with us tonight. I hope you can return next Tuesday evening. 73 Doug K7KY

ORCA ANNOUNCMENTS

Tonight’s weekly FLAMP exercise distributes ‘ex20.txt’, an optional

file-manipulation/FLAMP exercise. Return your file in FLAMP to NCS

during TRAFFIC round, or send your own practice message, or QRU. This

multitasking exercise provides practice in processing traffic while

maintaining focus on net operations.

Thank you, Steve K6ETA for suggesting we turn TXid off during nets and

to Rick N6IET for waking me up about exactly what that means. We’re

leaving RXid active. No TXid is a good idea. Ops will have to turn TXid

on/off when changing modes.

You can send your traffic in any mode you think the band will support.

Be sure to turn TXid on/off and return to MFSK-32 for net business.

Please use pre-tone when doubles are likely. Pre-tone is not helpful

when NCS calls you.

Weekly Net Report posted as soon as we can… If you want email notice

when the Report is posted, email: ncs@orcadigitalnet.com

:mg:947 During a recent Trinity Radio Readiness Net, stations in Trinity Center, Weaverville, and Hayfork experimented with simplex and

discovered an unexpected result: that by using a slightly different simplex frequency, changing from 146.400 MHz to 147.565 MHz, made a

very large improvement to communications (“no copy” to “easy copy”). More experimentation is needed to understand this result.

Discussion:

•Propagation in the mountainous area is much more complex than line-of-sight.

•Multi path constructive or destructive summation depends on path difference and frequency . While fixed base station antennas don’t usually

move, a change in frequency can change the multi-path signal sum from destructive to constructive.

•For emergency situations, have a number of simplex frequencies available for use and be prepared to experiment to find the best one for the

current conditions.

•Be prepared to be flexible in frequency assignment.

KA7FOO Thanks for taking time to study the net some Ops just jump in and go for it… not too bad an idea for some, other don’t have sufficient backgorund to keep up with the flow we don’t get upset with anyone anyway as it’s a practice net and the best place to make mistakes btu < K7KY

Thanks Doug. lI am still learning the FLamp.

KA7FOO

I have started a Washoe Digital Group last December.

Now a running net, on 2 meters in FM mode.

I have been net control. Now that I have a working

group I am changing the net procedure to follow

something simular to ORCA. So, guide me correctly!

KA7FOO < K7KY

KA7FOO < K7KY oops! wrong macro I hope to guide you correctly and some of that depends on the net members guiding me correctly as K6ETA Steve did last week with the no TXid suggestion. We’re all here to learn and my more than some other… w/o all u Ops I couldn’t learn NCS duties.. OK time for some dinner nice to hv u aboard 73 Doug K7KY sk

I hit the wrong macro at times.

Has been a learning experince to be NCS.

Have been NCSing since 1981, Tillamook Radio club

and Beaver State RACES.

Thanks again. Good net to be involved in. See you next week.

KA7FOO

KA7FOO Doug i forgot to say I can send u the macros I use for ORCA if u like my typing is falling apart now… anyway anything I use for ORCA that u can use let me know I’ve been NCS for mostly VHF nets but none of my NCS experience has been as intense as the digital net anyway let me know if we can share any boilerplate or routines the macro u can modify to ur needs 73 < K7KY

Sure. I have built a macro system for working the WDG Net.

I too have just started NCS on digi comms as well.

Tad bit more work than phone ops. But we can take the heat!
