80m was adequate for some and difficult for others. Check out Jaye KE6SLS’s test images below. Mid-west Ops are able to ck-in, but the band isn’t sufficient to work the net. 32 stations logged in. One shy of our record. We accomplished a lot in 1.5hr. It’s a long time to stay focused.  We like to be closer to an hour.

ORCA DIGITAL NET Welcomes Chris K0PHP in Columbia,MO. Yet another MO station. It’s interesting to see station locations on the map. This time of year, those mid-western stations can usually ck-in, but don’t have sufficient path to participate.  There’s nearly a dozen digital HF stations that ck-in from mid-west. I wish we could accommodate them fully; they’re at the fringe of our 35w signal. My hope is they will stand-up a mid-west HF digital Traffic net, similar to WESTERN DIGITAL NET, recently established, ‘West of the Rockies’, by Steve K6ETA.

Speaking of Steve; this quote from the Comment Round:

Even with everything going on at present, the WDN has only one message tonight: Please participate in ORCA! The ORCA Net has been rock solid for seven years now, resulting in over 50 (maybe over 100) stations capable of expertly passing traffic during this solar minimum.

This is not a push-button FT8 curiosity! It is a highly dynamic and capable pool of digital ops and relay stations!

We encourage all NBEMS, FLDigi and interested stations to participate in this excellent net. The WDN simply wouldn’t be here without it.

All the best, K6ETA and the WDN Team.

Steve’s comments are more than complimentary flowers. His assessment of your credentials is significant. This isn’t his first digital rodeo. Steve’s WDN vision connects an available pool of digital Operators with the need for digital Traffic nets. You are that pool of expert Operators. WDN is right up your alley. New digital Ops are learning traffic-handling routines by watching and working with you. Soon, they’re participating. Thanks for your part in taking Amateur Digital Networking another step forward.

WESTERN DIGITAL NET will leverage your skills and expertise. WDN is a full-fledged Traffic net; we can practice and polish our skills on Tuesday, and put them to work on Thursday. The present COVID-19 Pandemic will challenge us in unforeseen ways. As digital radio Ops, we’re well prepared. As individuals facing a serious health threat, we’re on unfamiliar turf; we want to support each other with the best information and tactics we can gather. If we avoid infection, we won’t have to cure it. Today, it’s strategic to assume anyone may be contagious; America has not yet begun major testing. Be mindful. Don’t take unnecessary risks. Stay home as much as possible. Avoid personal contact. Eat healthy. Rest well…

We’ve added a COVID-19 Information page to the website: http://orcadigitalnet.com/covid-19/

Six stations returned the FLAMP Optional Exercise. All six were OK with the Exercise pace. Some felt the pace a positive challenge. A couple stations missed the difference between Originator/Responder tabs. Initially, the FLAMP Exercise was a bit slower, but the pace crept up as everyone became proficient. When we call for your REPORT, we wait until our signal clears the waterfall and a bit more before calling the next station. We try to leave a little more time at the top of the roster. During Comments, a monitoring station suggested the pace was too fast for new digital Ops. It probably varies depending on previous experience.

You can learn the FLAMP routines while monitoring. Attention and focus are key. The roster is on your desktop. You know your place in rotation. Stay focused; be ready to send your REPORT when called. We’re learning to combine routines and tactics into an operation performed by multiple stations. When you’re comfortable working the FLAMP Exercise, you’ll be well poised to handle Routine and Emergency traffic. You’re deciding and acting at a faster pace than Traffic and Emergency nets require. You’ll have more confidence and comfort in difficult times.

Remember WESTERN DIGITAL NET, the major digital Traffic net West of the Rockies. WDN meets every Thursday evening, 1930p/0230z, 3.581+1500, MFSK-32, Steve K6ETA NCS. Steve usually takes early ck-ins around 1900p/0200z. Remember to space your check-in calls; NCS is also building the Roster.

We enjoyed working with you tonight and look forward to seeing you again next Tuesday evening.   73 Doug K7KY

Some recent feedback indicates our perception and opinions about COVID-19 gives
the impression we’re frightened and may be causing others to fear. We deeply regret
upsetting anyone. We’re definitely concerned and apprehensive about COVID-19, but
we’ve not panicked. We’re living very much as we always have; we’re homebodies.
We gather information from all available sources. Our strategy for this invisible
threat was to prepare early. Should it turn out unnecessary, we’ve lost very little
and likely gained useful experience. Waiting too long to take action in this
situation might be life threatening, depending on your age and health.

If we’ve upset you, please accept our apology. We’ve not noticed any sense of panic in
our colleagues, but that’s our perception. YMMV. Panic has been redefined by journalists.
We see headlines of ‘Panic Shoppers’, but the accompanying images are of orderly lines
of citizens awaiting access. Shoppers appear to be prudent people preparing for a period
of no access. Unfortunately, there are some who buy all the TP or bleach available.
Common sense would have shoppers also considering their community.

We all need to use our best judgement and common sense. Cast a wide net for information,
develop a strategy and implement. It may significantly change your daily life, but that
doesn’t imply panic. Better to prepare early, than to react too late to be effective.
We’ll see how it turns out for those still celebrating in crowds at beach and bar.

During the Traffic and Comment rounds, feel free to deviate from our usual focus on radio
topics and comment or opine about COVID-19.

The test suggest that humans could be infected by the disease simply carried through the air or on a solid surface, even if direct contact with an infected person does not occur. That finding, if accepted, would come in stark contrast to previous media reports that suggested the virus was not easily transmittable outside of direct human contact.

A lot has happened in the last week! My University is now closed and we will be completing the rest of the semester online. This is a real problem for Biology labs, but we will do the best we can. We are currently on Spring Break so the fun will start next week.

Stores are having trouble keeping up with demand and most canned items, paper goods and dry good are sold out. Fresh food is still available. At least my wife (KI7WEX) and I are set. We always have emergency food stores that should last for several weeks to months…

Hope everyone is well!!! Stay healthy and safe!

Cool/cold, over cast alllll day today with a bit of rain. Snow on the hills too. Looking forward to a sunny tomorrow and lots of solar charging for my shack batteries.

We are hunkered down here for the next couple of weeks. Fingers crossed that more folks have taken serious steps to reduce their risk to themselves and others. Good willing, we will NOT loose any of our net members!

I assumed that the nets would be much busier yesterday, but instead the numbers were lower than usual. I have no idea why hams wouldn’t be more engaged with the emergency nets. Sort of boggles my mind.

This ham has little freezer capacity. Right now, I have plenty of food, but I may end up trying the delivery method some time next week. Really wish Costco had such a service, or at least an order/pick up service

Humboldt county has made some major changes to reduce risk. I am very pleased how well my community is pulling together to see a safe return to ‘normal living’.

Have felt poorly last 5 days but do not have fever. Perhaps suffering from stress. Stress also causes the bodies imune system to suffer At least I have rested better the last two nights.

Wow, lots of DX check-ins tonight! I heard some, but not all. Still wish I had more antenna!

Take note of my S/N tonight. Isn’t that amazing that low S-meter readings seem to have NO INFLUENCE on the S/N readings! I am VERY happy I converted my inverted vee to the delta vee

Hmmm, Need OS updates. Completed. Wonder if MS computers could do that during an ORCA net? Shrug. .

Stay healthy and well all, look for you on the WDN.

Another great evening to practice with a great group of people. I’d love to have all of your macros and know how to use them. I’ve been busy at the Idaho OEM, which is activated. I’m building the daily Sitrep and a list of closed school districts. I’ll be running the radio room by myself tomorrow and checking in to the SHARES nets without our regular volunteers. Lots of moving pieces.
Stay healthy everyone. 73

Sorry no individual signal reports tonite. Surprisingly all stns averaged (S9) tonite during ck-in. Good copy on all. ORCA welcomes Chris K0PHP in Colombia,MO. Appreciate the feedback re:FLAMP exercise. Jaye… we get some groceries delivered from Costco. Look online. Ur s/n is 3dB to 6dB… looking good

I’m disturbed to see confusing & mixed msgs in the media re:COVID-19. This is a time to do your own research. Look to the countries hardest hit and learn from their experience, so that we may lessen ours. The sense that “it’s not in my community” may be because there has been so little testing. Consider also the actions of China; quarantining large cities, then the nation. Wreaking financial havoc upon itself by shutting down all mfg & trade. This is not the flu. Neighboring countries closing borders, followed by other nations. The flow of the virus to Iran and Italy. There has never been an event like this before. I find it prudent to acquire information from many sources to make rational, informed decisions. This is a time for critical thinking & actions, so you won’t be part of the panic that may follow. My hope is that we’re overly cautious about this and we’re all back to our normal routines very soon.

Good to see all stns on the WF tonite.
Wishing us all good health!!

In Washington, All libraries are now closed. All schools are closed. Governor has ordered no public gatherings greater that 50 persons and no gatherings of less than 50 persons if they cannot keep a 2 meter separation. No church services for me this week and probably for months to come.

Wife is still ill but seems to be getting stronger but with a persistent cough. Son is a trucker, was sent home due to fever two days ago, has sore throat, coughing, sneezing, malaise. He reports loads are dropping in his company. Some drivers being sent home, even if well. I still have no symptoms.

KI7LOQ 100% FLAMP S9+ 5db Yes, I agree, IF there are a lot of ops ahead of me, I can do the FLMSG in time before it is time to REPORT. It takes me at least 5 minutes to create the FLMSG correctly. If I am waiting to give a report, I sometimes miss as I am engaged in creating the document.

It seems to me that experienced ops find the pace good or okay, whereas newer ops find it too fast.

Generally poor copy here tonight, except for the Wi·z etgZ1hhere’s a second reason for Seniors to ‘stay home’ besides the virus. If you need anything, many store tlbe are staying stripped clean by hoarders-daily. There’s no point in going out to see that.
