Band condx are definitely improving. Rick K0KEX in Springville,MO checked in just in time for comments. His signal printed 100%. As Fall progresses, we can expect some of our Eastern Ops to return.

Thanks for your patience. I’ve made more than usual mistakes during nets lately. I’m not used to multiple medical issues, but I’m catching on. Old age reduces social relationships and increases medical relationships. Not fun, but better than the alternative.

Preparing for the Transcontinental Digital Net Test, I met Bob K2RSB. Later, I received email from Bob telling me my Amateur License expired. Wow! 10yrs flashed by quickly. Although this news surprised me, I didn’t think it a big deal. Only a month late & FCC gives 2yrs grace period b4 cancelling. But, trying to pay the $35 fee is a serious challenge. I’m already a couple hours into the process, w/o being able to pay. I’ve finally arrived at the screen where I select the callsign to renew, but there’s nothing in the box. Meantime, my Amateur License is invalid.

Welcome back to Fred K6FVC in Jerome,ID & Mauro AG7BI in Kingston,WA.

Update 19/Oct/23: Don AB1PH’s Transcontinental Propagation Test Net was very successful, at least from our perspective. West Coast Ops really shined. ARRL Region 7 had the most participants with 10 stations logged. 10 ORCA Ops participated. ORCA Ops set an important example by Pre-Toning @ Ck-In. No Pre-Tone led to a few doubles, but overall Ck-In was orderly. NCS couldn’t copy every station; I logged 41, but didn’t hear them all. I copied Jaye KE6SLS & Lamar AE6LJ, but not Matt N6FPV. I didn’t expect to hear anyone close on 20m. I’d like to see this Test repeated using FLAMP Reports to evaluate NCS path-to-stations. A Nat’l Digital Training/Emergency Net called from mid-USA would very likely succeed. The old SATERN Digital Emergency Net is proof-of-concept.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Tonight’s NBEMS Exercise features an FLMSG Radiogram. NBEMS Exercises are primarily focused on NBEMS traffic-handling routines and tactics; Exercise questions simulate message content.

20m Transcontinental NBEMS Net(Directed) will meet tomorrow evening, Wed/18/Oct, 1800p, 1900m, 2000c, 2100e, 14.068mhz, THOR-11. Ck-In called by district (CALLSIGN Numeral). Be sure to follow digital networking protocols. NCS will be very busy logging stations Coast2Coast. Save net-time by disabling TxID. Your brief Pre-Tone will help minimize doubles.

Oops! Another NCS error in last week’s NBEMS Exercise. The Inline Execution symbol, <!, for choice B) should have been <@, the Delayed Action symbol. As the Exercise was written…
A)
B) <!POP>

C) -01
D)
…the correct answer is D). Lamar AE6LJ, Jaye KE6SLS, & Don KJ7VGV were correct. <!POP>
would execute where it appears in a macro; Inline. <@ execution follows ci z

ORCA < WA7JYK – I participated in the Zoom! meeting tonight in preparation for the Transcontinental test NBEMS net
mentioned in Announcements. A few other ORCA ops were present. Over 63 ops volunteered to participate in the test net
tomorrow night. That’s a LOT of stations to accomodate. I hope to have some results to report for next week’s ORCA net.

I missed a chance to transmit in MFSK64 for the exercise tonight considering improved band conditions. Asleep at the wheel.

Winter is knocking at our door in the mountains of ne Oregon. Snow forecasted for Monday night and Tuesday. Yikes!

Thanks to Doug and Mindy for tonight’s training session. Always the highlight of my week!

All is well. 73 de WA7JYK

Had a very nice, controlled ZOOM session with Don in MA who is busy
organizing the Transcontinental NBEMS test net for tomorrow. I can
tell Don has never NCS’d a large digital net before, and this should
be a very enlightening experience for both him and so many of the
more novice participants. I transmitted a test using THOR11 before
the session began and picked up for new east coast ops in my log book,
the most enjoyable was a ham from MD 😄 Tomorrow should prove very
interesting and I can only hope folks will be VERY QUIET until called
by NCS!

Was also nice to see Rick k0kex in the session. Good work Rick!

I dabbled on 10m yesterday, heard WALES coming in so strong. But then
signals started to drop so I moved to 15m psk31 and had a wonderful
chat with fellow veteran in NY. Switched to CW and had a lovely call
with W1AW, the op was Carol and I failed to get Carols call, however,
I had to complement the op on a fantastic fist. Just a pleasure
to hear!

Will C U in the Monitor session 😄

Stay well, practice often, and make sure to have some fun doing it!

Unable to connect into the Transcontential Net Back Chn Zoom meeting Tnx to K7KY for sharing additional info on the Exercise.
On 14.068 Mhz earlier worked a station from Maryland very good s/n reports.
Last weeks club meeting was interesting with an Active Shooter presentation by a retired L.A. Detective. Asked if he thought
there might be a resolution to America’s mass shootings. He said he did not think so; advocating hyper situational awareness
and locating escape routes before events happen. To immediately run.

Hope to be called for a message reception report in the Transcontinental Net tomorrow.

Best to K7KY and his surgery 73’s to all on the net- Brad

Tnx Brad sorry to hr the Detective doens’t have much hope & I hope the test tomorrow goes off well keep the NCS in

Tnx Doug. For Lamar, if you haven’t already done this, make sure to bring the
computer to town and use compressed air to blow the dirt/junk out of it. That should
go a LONG WAY to dealing with over heating. The FLDIGI software isn’t a big
time user of CPU cycles, there’s other things buggering that computer. Just
a thought!

SHORTWAVE RADIOGRAM

Shortwave Radiogram transmits digital text and images on an analog shortwave broadcast transmitter. The program is produced and presented by Dr. Kim Andrew Elliott KD9XB. Shortwave Radiogram continues VOA Radiogram's tradition testing new modes and is an interesting source for Digital Ops wishing to practice more with FLDIGI & FLAMP.
