We really wrapped up the year nicely tonight with a record 30 check-ins and an almost perfect FLAMP Exercise. Actually, we’re not looking for perfection in this exercise; errors and problems are excellent teaching events. But, tonight was a little different. Mindy W7ZAP CONFIRMED 8 of 9 stations on the first pass in THOR-50×1. Greg KG7D only missed one block. The band was improving quickly for Greg, but not quick enough. Check Greg’s Test images (below). In Carson City,NV, the band went rapidly from very poor to solid copy. Have you noticed we have no stations in Montana or Wyoming. Maybe their digital Ops moved to Cedar City,UT.

There were numerous relays tonight; no surprise at Solar Minimum. Relays are routine for HF traffic-handling these days. Thanks to Jaye KE6SLS, KR7KR Ken, Steve W7WSV, and Greg KG7D. Relays are on our minds lately. Note that Steve relayed even though logged in&out. We appreciate all relays; you don’t need to be Active to relay. Don’t forget a pre-tone when calling NCS; the net is not expecting you. Remember too, there are three ck-in points every session. We always call for Late Ck-Ins before Traffic and Comments; you can ck-in or change your status then. So, relay when it’s needed and ck-in or change status at the Ck-In points.

Joe W7LUX and Steve K6ETA recently engaged us with constructive observations an suggestions for net operations. We always appreciate those who take time to help develop and manage the net. It keeps us mindful of net ownership. We’re the stewards and you are the net. Without you, we would not be a net. It’s a pleasure to merit your confidence and support. Steve W7WSV commented tonight, “Learned a lot this year. Thank you all”. He sums it up for us nicely. Our learning environment is created each session by our direction and your participation. Working the net according to ORCA protocol consistently each session creates a uniform model for new members to emulate.

My exchange with Dave K7DV tonight about the value of routinely sending traffic multiple times may need some clarification. It’s certainly a useful tactic in some circumstances, but it’s antithetical to our training philosophy. Sending traffic multiple times will save time in some circumstances, but our objectives are different. We welcome a bit of QRM/QRN/QSB. It provides conditions that require us to dig a little deeper into our tool set by using other NBEMS features to complete the transfer. We’re teaching full spectrum understanding and use of FLDIGI’s tools. Sending the file multiple times reduces the need to use other tactics to complete the transfer. Better we’re familiar and comfortable with these tools, rather than need them and not know them well. We’re teaching and practicing the full set of NBEMS tools. Although we won’t need all of them every time. When you need them, you’ll be pleased to know them well.

We made good on our new policy of filling Traffic Round messages following the net. Joe W7LUX needed a block for Greg KG7D’s Traffic round message. We completed the file for him after closing. In Comments, tell us you want to fill messages sent to NCS in Traffic. We’ve usually CONFIRMED them all and can fill you following the net. Welcome back to Lynden KG7SXQ in St George,UT. St George is similar to Cedar City,UT; lots of interest in digital operations.

Tonight’s Optional exercise question was timely. Not everyone understood relaying from the RX screen. I hope Mindy’s Traffic message made it clear. Sending fills or the entire file from the RX screen is required. If you shift it to the TX screen with the ‘To TxQ’ button, FLAMP thinks it’s a new file and assigns a new CheckSum ID#. This ID will not fill the file transmitted originally, even though the file is identical. The CheckSum has to match.

ORCA DIGITAL NET will be off-the-air for the remainder of 2019, skipping Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve. We’ll be back on January 7, 2020, celebrating our 7th Anniversary. We’re deeply grateful for your ongoing support and participation. Together, we’re maintaining a useful digital traffic-handling training net. Current participation and support implies we’re doing a good job. You, and the manner in which you engage the net, are the essence of our training and practice platform. As we practice to embed digital routines and tactics, we also create a working model of Directed digital networking that enables others to learn by emulation and osmosis. We’re all doing well. We love working with you. Thank you so much! CU next year 73 Doug K7KY & Mindy W7ZAP

ANNOUNCEMENTS 17/Dec/2019

Tonight’s FLAMP exercise distributes the file, ‘ex150.txt’, an FLDIGI/FLMSG/
FLAMP exercise. If you complete the OPTIONAL exercise within, send that file to
NCS in the Traffic round with FLAMP, tonight or any session.

ORCA DIGITAL NET will skip the next two sessions, Christmas Eve and New Year’s
Eve, Dec/25&31. We’ll be back on January 7, 2020, celebrating our 7th Anniversary.
It’s been a good year for ORCA. Participation is increasing steadily and we’ve
managed very well in the depths of Solar Minimum. Mindy and I wish you a pleasant
and uplifting Holiday Season.

Please read the Preamble closely; it does change now and then. In particular, review
our Check-In protocol. Participating stations send CALLSIGN only; Monitoring stations
send CALLSIGN IN&OUT. If you need to send more, perhaps your QTH has changed, please
put the added info on the same line, ie: AL7PE Weed,CA. That’s all we want. Thanks
for making check-in brisk and easy for NCS.

Remember: When you see an asterisk after a CALLSIGN* on the Roster, that station
is Active, but not called for REPORTS during the FLAMP Exercise. They’re still
called for Traffic and Comments. We’re saving some time in the FLAMP Exercise by
skipping REPORTS for stations we believe will CONFIRM the traffic.

:mg:706 FLAMP, File CheckSum information

When NCS asks you to RELAY FLAMP Fill Blocks, send your Fill from the RX screen using ‘FETCH’ to populate the ‘blocks’ window, and ‘RELAY’ to send fill blocks. Don’t use the ‘To TxQ’ button that shifts the file to the TX screen. If you shift the file to the TX screen, FLAMP sees a new file and assigns a new Check Sum. This Check Sum will be different from the file Check Sum you received, even though it’s the same file. Stations needing fill will not be able to FILL if the Check Sum is wrong.

The FETCH button will collect missing blocks requested by all stations. Delete the blocks not requested by NCS. If FETCH doesn’t display all requested blocks, type them in.

Was that the FASTEST tfc net EVER?! wow I KNOW I am going to be hard copy for NCS tonight. NVIS is gone. 8pm NCS is 20 over locally.

Had 1 1/2 good days of solar (sunshine!) and station batteries got a long over due shot of juice!

Enjoyed the ARC holiday party Friday. Haven’t eaten so well since I don’t know when! Also, some very good “hot totties” were served and they hit the spot.

75M nets have been very tough. Read today (ARRL news) that the cycle is supposed to bottom out in April. We’ll see! Sure looking forward to longer days after Saturday. The band has changed radically from early check-ins to beginning of net.

Doug/Mindy, it impresses me to no end how you guys can copy me and I can’t hear NCS. Your radio shack is amazing. Glad I was able to participate tonight.

Happy holidays to all on the ORCA Digital net!
