It looks like small nets may be the norm for summer.  The combination of noisy summer conditions on the low bands and great wx for outdoor activities and travel cuts into radio time for most of us.  I know some stations are not hearing me well this summer. Last week I didn’t do well with Danon KJ6UPE and David NX6D, although not all our difficulties are propagation.  QTH and equipment are also big factors.  Tonight, the band was not too shabby for a summer evening.  Most traffic passed on the first transmission.

Mindy W7ZAP and I sent messages in PSK63RC4.  My antenna favors Don and Ken K7IFG and they both copied my PSK63RC4 message 100%.  Mindy’s antenna is better E/W.  Were we passing actual communications, Mindy & I could work all directions effectively.

It’s been interesting to use different digital modes.  Needing more signal this summer encouraged me to delve into the properties of different modes.  Here are some PSK63RC4 specs:

PSK63RC4  = 220wpm, 330bw,  80% dutycycle, FEC
MFSK32     = 120wpm, 630bw, 100% dutycycle

I’m particularly interested in modes with lighter duty cycles.  Using PSK63RC4, I can increase my transmit power by 20%.  More power and less band width by half should improve my signal somewhat.  Eventually, we’ll know which mode is best for current conditions.  Not all modes will transmit images; an important feature.

By now, our regular members have flamp installed and working.  We are successfully using flamp nearly every net.  And, we’ve developed a workable routine to make flamp REPORTs quickly and fill missing blocks w/o disrupting traffic rotation.

After closing the net, we QSY’d to our 40m alternate, 7.122, but didn’t connect.  We should probably check our alternate frequency more often when conditions are poor on 80m.

Thanks for coming out to work with us tonight.  I hope to see you next week too.  73 Doug K7KY

hearing so many observations that I need more power @

mode is much narrower and only 10wpm slower than

my power in poor conditions.  We should try
