Tonight was the first evening since last winter that it was already dark when we called the net. We found 80m to be long… all the way thru the net. The band let up a bit towards the end, giving better propagation to the near-by (200-300mile) stations. Keith WA0TJT’s VidID printed well from Kansas City,MO.  We also  had 100% KBD copy on Rick K0KEX in Smithville,MO

For the FLAMP exercise, Doug K7KY used all fast, wide modes with surprising results. He CONFIRMED 3 stations in UT on his first pass in THOR100 (352wpm, 1800hz). Modes MFSK128 (480wpm, 1920hz) and MFSK64 (240wpm, 1260hz) CONFIRMED 2 more stations, with the latter relayed by Fred KI7TPD in Cedar City,UT. Gene W1EEP experienced poor reception with the wide modes and remained unable to fill block 1 in MFSK32 (120wpm, 630hz) from NCS.

It was interesting to see the replies to the exercise question, “Do you work CW? What is your usual WPM?”. Turns out we have a number of CW Operators among us. Doug and I both attended the CW Academy (20wpm/Farnsworth) a number of years ago. He’s completed Levels 2, and 3 and went on to become a CW Op member (25wpm). I completed Levels 1 and 2. My main CW contacts have been with Doug. I’m not a big QSO person and never felt real secure to get out there and make contacts. I’d hate to lose a skill that I worked so hard to attain, and we know you either use it, or lose it. Neither Doug nor I do any regular CW work and have both become rusty. Perhaps this winter other ORCA CW Ops may want to sharpen their CW skills and practice with friends one night a week. We’ll see if there is enough interest.

The most notable transmission of the evening goes to Rick K0KEX in Smithville,MO. Just before the end of the net, Rick sent his FLAMP exercise to NCS using MFSK32 and was CONFIRMED in 1 pass. Rick has been checking into ORCA for over a year in spite of the impediments of propagation and distance. Last night was the first time we’ve received a file from him. Hats off to Rick for persevering.

Below are the images copied at the beginning and end of the net. It always fascinates me to see such different path quality between stations. Thanks for sending both images. Your images enhance the Net Report.  Beside improving the Net Report, we’re learning to locate and manipulate files in the PC operating system.  This computer skill is essential to digital traffic-handling.  Traffic cannot always be relayed directly; it’s often held until a receiver is available.  Then it must be located, loaded, and transmitted.  With a basic understanding of the files-system, these tasks are easy and intuitive.

ANNOUNCEMENTS 15/Oct/2019

Tonight’s FLAMP exercise distributes the file, ‘ex141.txt’, an FLDIGI/FLMSG/FLAMP
exercise. If you complete the OPTIONAL exercise within, send that file to NCS in
the Traffic round with FLAMP.

Is this fake-news? We can hope.
https://www.naturalnews.com/2019-10-14-california-ban-ham-radios-unless-pay-fees.html
If this is true, CALFIRE wants Amateurs to remove repeaters from their mountaintops,
or pay application and processing fees and rent commesurate with other site occupants.
They’re confident in their new comm gear.

On Oct9-10 we ran a special session of ORCA for Steve K6ETA and Jaye KE6SLS
who were active with Emergency Services in Sonoma and Humboldt County during
California’s tactical grid-down operation. Initially, we wanted to hear reports
from our colleagues on scene, but we quickly shifted to a support net. We were
able to supply Jaye with real-time WX data and predictions when Humboldt Co was
w/o internet access. We passed this data to Jaye on 160m in MFSK-32. It was
ORCA’s first real opportunity to support emergency operations. The task was small
and very easy to accomplish. It’s what we train for every Tuesday evening. See
these two net Reports at the website, ‘Net Reports’.

FLDIGI Manual 4.0, Ch8, p415, ‘Installing FLDIGI on a Thumb Drive’.
Follow up to FLDIGI on a Thumbdrive. This tactic does require working knowledge
of your PC file system. The NBEMS apps start from the file manager, rather than from
desktop icons. If you run the apps in another computer, you may have to reassign the
comm port. Windows seems to fiddle with com-port assignments when it’s idle. There
may be issues with macros that require a specific file-system address.

A few days ago Doug K7KY was re-configuring our IC-7300. Tuning with 1w, he was
surprised to make contact with Brad WA7HHE in Cedar City,UT and Darrell W6ADZ in
Reno,NV. Some days, adding an amp is no help, other days contact is possible with
a mere wisp of power.

Our net frequency is becoming a digital watering hole, of sorts. There are numerous
digital nets on 3.581 and digital Ops are beginning to tune 3.581 for contacts.

Tonight, I copied 100% from KI7TPD, KG7VVN, K6QOG, and KR7KR all from Utah. Long skip tonight. Net control was p1 on the video image and negative copy on the Exercise from net control, but got it via the relay from Utah. If this were emergency, that would be an interesting work-around, huh?

Thanks, Mindy… It was a nice opportunity to support Steve K6ETA and Jaye KE6SLS while PG&E turned off the power. We initially hoped to receive reports about the two counties, but we soon actually did some real support besides the wx reports we sent into Humboldt co, we also relayed a H&W email for them.
