Band condx were tough tonight. We didn’t hear from anyone in WY,MT,NM,KS,or MS; no surprise. The Roster was light too. Summer WX usually diminishes the Roster. It’s still daylight at net time; many are still busy outdoors. Summer is not prime for 80m anyway. Although 80m is usually best in Winter, that wasn’t so last year.

Only two stations were interested in working the FLAMP Exercise tonight, another ORCA record. This really shortens the Exercise and total net time. The net was over in 36min. Six stations checked into the after-net Monitor’s Session tonight, another record. That session took 35min. Both sessions wrapped in less time than an average net.

During the Monitor’s Session, Randy K7NOJ was having difficulty with an FLMSG feature. Tom WB7TZD popped in and offered to work with Randy. They’re radio neighbors, so to speak. This is one of ORCA’s best features; digital-savvy Elmers helping newer stations come up to speed with net routines. Hats-Off to Tom! We deeply appreciate Elmers; we don’t know everything, that’s certain. We have learned a lot in the last 8yrs, thanks to each of you. Without your participation and support, there would be no net and we would not be learning the NCS role.

We’re wondering if the FLAMP Exercise seems too hard to incoming Ops and/or has become too easy and boring for veteran ORCA Ops. Many Ops now work the exercise quickly, seemingly w/o effort. Exercises like tonight w/only 2 stations participating are not as effective as Exercises with eight Active stations. More stations make more opportunities for participants to Relay fill blocks to other stations. It also gives us the opportunity to learn the characteristics of member stations, enabling us to choose the best station to Relay for those needing fills.

When you work the FLAMP Exercise, you’re doing more than practicing NBEMS traffic-handling routines; you’re contributing to a comprehensive working demonstration for stations Monitoring or just Lurking. We have a lot more Lurkers than we would have guessed. Many stations work along with the net w/o ever checking in. We hear of more all the time.

When your local NBEMS groups have Exercises and Drills, we encourage you to summarize the results in the Comment Round. We’re interested in your methods, results, and solutions. Many net members are active leaders in their community. We can benefit from their years of experience.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Tonight’s FLAMP Exercise distributes the file, ‘ex224.txt’, including an ADVANCED Exercise. If you complete the ADVANCED Exercise, send it when NCS calls you for Traffic. CONFIRM 100% copy of the primary file before working the ADVANCED Exercise. Monitoring stations can FILL or CONFIRM Exercise files in the after-net Monitor’s Session.

We’ve added content to the website Macros page and refined the ORCA Relay and Ck-In macros. You can download a macro file with ck-in macros for ORCA & WDN, QSOs, and lots of blank buttons for practice and development. We’re working on an outline of the Macro Parser. You don’t need it to create basic macros. Follow the online instructions to install this file. If you have any difficulty with the instructions, email: ncs@orcadigitalnet.com

Many ORCA Ops are also members of various Amateur agencies like ARES, RACES, and local ARCs. Most of them have regular exercises and drills. After-Action-Reviews may be instructive for other ORCA members. Please summarize your event and results in the Comment round. Others may benefit from your experience and you may get some useful input. We have numerous radio Ops with extensive EMCOMM experience.

Setting FLAMP Block size: When band condx are marginal, 64 bytes/block is a good choice. If you set block size too large for condx it will take more time to fill stations with poor path. Always consider band condx when selecting block size. Large blocks save time in excellent band condx, and may waste a lot of time when the band is weak or noisy.

For email notice when the Net Report is posted, write: ncs@orcadigitalnet.com

I don’t recall ever having only 2 stations for the Exercise this mean only 2 station 4 Traffic 2 BTN < K7KY

After seeing the test images from 4 stns, I thought both active stns would confirm on 2nd pass (THOR 50×1).
Good mode selection Doug. Tough to guess what shape the band will be in.

It has been hot and dry here.

Getting ready for Field Day. We are out at Three Peaks again this year and hope to have some nice weather.

I have been experimenting with my antenna. It converted it to a inverted L, but I am not sure it made much difference… I have a DX commander on the way so we will see how it does.

ORCA < WA7HHE Hopefully am not over worrying. The State of Utah is currently, experiencing Red Flag Warnings with Five active Wildland Fires and a Drought that appears to be on track to beat 2020 as the driest year on record for Utah, according to the National Center for Environmental Information report.

Interesting info: The Dust Bowl Decade from 1933 to 1943 affected approximately 75% of Utah. Agriculture productivity was decreased to almost half of prior years production and the number of farms significantly decreased. In addition to agricultural impacts, water storage supplies rapidly diminished with Utah Lake dropping to 1/3 of its total volume.

Watering restrictions are currently in place. Utah’s Governor has asked residents to pray for rain.

This concern might beg the question: What is your personal, and states strategy to deal with Climate Change? Pls send OR rain <WA7HHE

I understand ur concern re: fires… Didnt know UT was s effected by dust bowl. The WX patterns sure make u think about these issues. Hope the rain comes ur way!
