ORCA DIGITAL NET Welcomes first-time Ck-In, Mark KA7ULD in Helena,MT. He may be our first and only Montana station. Welcome back to Steve WY7SJM (clever CALLSIGN) in Casper,WY, our only Wyoming station. We’ve yet to log North or South Dakota. We’ve wondered if our signal doesn’t do well in these states or if they have few digital Operators. Time will tell.

The band was up to it’s usual fickle antics again tonight. Dave K7DV checked in with a solid signal, but was gone when the FLAMP Exercise began a short time later. Maybe the band or maybe Uber called. We weren’t copying many stations to our far North, but Tom WB7TZD checked in near net-end with a good signal from Vancouver,WA. The Signal Evaluation Images tell a partial tale of band condx during the net and make the Net Reports more interesting and informative. Thanks for sending them. Locating and sending them gives additional practice navigating the PC file system and manipulating files.

Current social conditions impel us to focus on the value of digital nets during disruptive times. Amateurs have long-established CW and Phone nets. Digital nets are relatively new and less organized and interconnected. We can begin addressing the need to establish more digital nets and linkage between digital nets. Standing up new nets is challenging. Steve K6ETA accomplished it this year with Western Digital Net. He has the support of ORCA Ops, making his task a bit easier, but definitely not a slam dunk.

Easier than establishing a new net is working the existing digital nets. When you work other nets regularly, you soon become a de facto liaison station. Liaison Stations pass traffic between Traffic nets. They are also Ambassadors and examples of good digital operating protocols and conventions. They’re the vital linkage between nets. Our own Bruce KB7VX, currently KB7VX/P in Gallup,NM is a Poster Boy for network Liaison. Bruce belongs to ORCA DIGITAL NET, Western Digital Net, and AmRRON. He passes informative traffic between nets. He must have impressed AmRRON with digital competence; they made him an official Relay station soon after joining the net. Working other nets does take time, but the contribution you’ll make to Amateur digital net development will make it worth the time and bother.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Tonight’s FLAMP Exercise distributes the file, ‘ex200.txt’, an FLDIGI/FLMSG/FLAMP
exercise. If you complete the OPTIONAL exercise within, send that file to NCS in
the Traffic round with FLAMP.

Tonight is a landmark of sorts; we’ve reached 200 FLAMP Exercises. That about four
years of Exercises. Another landmark will be our 8th Anniversary in January 2021.
Thanks to your support and participation, we’re still providing useful digital operations
training to the Amateur Radio community.

REPRINT
We normally don’t discuss Political/Religious topics here, but social conditions are
continuing to degenerate as we attempt to sort out the the November Election. It seems
prudent to strengthen and expand Amateur digital networks. Many Amateur nets are
organized to support Civic agencies in emergencies. These same nets are going to be
very useful to us Amateurs, whether or not we’re needed by Clients. This is a prudent
time to build linkages between existing nets and develop new nets. We should do all
we can to cross pollinate nets with liaison Ops, a normal activity for Traffic nets.

We encourage each of you to work other nets, particularly digital nets. It will be very
helpful for ORCA members to participate in other digital nets. You will become liaisons,
passing useful information between nets, and fostering bonds between digital Operators.
We’re already much more than a Training net; we’ve become a competent digital traffic-
handling team. With our support, Steve K6ETA has established Western Digital Net. It’s
time to expand a bit further, sharing our knowledge, skills, and digital netiquette with
the wider radio community.

Thanks for emailing the ORIGINAL Signal Evaluation images to: ncs@orcadigitalnet.com
(another file location & manipulation exercise)

Good copy on most tonight. Maybe that coronal mass ejection of last week is helpinng propagation.

Big ice storm here on last Friday and Saturday caused many accidents on Interstate 40, so much so that the Navajo Reservation ordered all businesses closed on the Reservation. Bad for me, because I get my propane there, so having to wait until tomorrow. Best wishes to all on ORCA.

Lately, I’ve been on a soapbox about linking digital nets with representatives from other nets. Linking our digital nets is the next phase in digital net development. It would be handy for our digital nets to all have liaison Ops from other nets. Traffic and current information would move about more quickly and foster strategic relationships between digital Operators.

ORCA DIGITAL NET Welcomes Mark KA7ULD in Helena,MT. We’ll ask Mark to monitor enough sessions to learn net routines. Mark may be our first Montana station. We were thinking there may not be any digital Ops in Montana, but we’re happy to be wrong.

Hats Off to stations, new and veteran, that read and follow our Ck-In Protocol. We send the Ck-In Protocol every week in the Preamble. It’s also in the website Quick-Start Guide. It presents the three Ck-In options we ask you to implement on a single line. As a Training Net, we’re setting a Directed digital net example for new Operators. It’s important to get it right. It also helps make Ck-In easier for NCS. TU
