Holy Cow! That was a hoppin’ net! ORCA welcomes 5 new stations tonight: W0YSE Neil, KA7FOO Doug, K6KQV Bill, N7NSL Ed and WB7QQE Jerry. We also had  KK6RKY Erik return to the net.

The weekly FLAMP exercise went smoothly with no stations requiring a fill. I did have an issue with my FLAMP at the beginning and had to remove the file I was TXing, then re-add it to the que. That seemed to fix whatever was bothering it. The good RX tonight is likely due to Daylight Savings and reception being better at this time. Traffic round was full of FLAMP exercise responses and, no surprise, most ops participate in numerous digital nets. Thanks to all for your encouragement and patience while I fill in for Doug K7KY. I’m enjoying the challenge and looking forward to next week.
73,
Mindy W7ZAP

Doug’s column…
I can type now with left hand and right index finger, but much too slowly for NCS duty. Thanks so much for your focus and attention.  It’s the prime factor that makes our complex digital net run so smoothly. Mindy has stepped into a difficult role in time of need and you have eased her path, just doing what you do every net.

Again, time limits us to one (1) message per Op in Traffic round.  We’re trying to sustain our routine of letting everyone TX, RX, and use the features in FLMSG and FLAMP every week.  We love interesting traffic, but favor brief and concise messages.  Short messages mean more evolutions of digital traffic practice.  The weekly FLAMP exercise provides for full use of the FLAMP features, REPORT & RELAY.

I check into lots of digital nets, so I understand how attention can wander while waiting your turn. Tonight we had a double or triple at the beginning of Comments. When Mindy called the first station, she didn’t hear a reply and called the next station, doubling with the first-called station and a late ck-in. The next station copied some of the double and tried to send NCS back to the first station. Very confusing. Now, we’ll wait a few more moments (-:

The net usually runs so smoothly that we unconsciously expect Ops to respond in a few seconds as they usually do.  This happens because you’re usually right on top of net flow and respond quickly. We’ll add a few seconds to our routine.    Each station and Op is unique and we aren’t pressing for faster response. Ops don’t respond for a variety of reasons.  Condx, equipment issues, telephone, lapse of attention, etc.  We don’t know ‘what’s up?’ in the moment and move on to the next station.  We look for missed stations at the end of each rotation.

So, thanks again for doing a great job with a complex task. 73 Doug K7KY

ORCA de N6IET – Rick in Los Angeles
I’m running about 25 watts using my old IC-735 this evening.
I’ve retired the huge and once again malfunctioning IC-761 :-(
I see that my IC-735’s VFO is 200 Hz low (unless the net is offset only 1300 Hz).

Can you believe I completely forgot to QNI last week?d I was sitting at my rig practicing my CW sending at the time. All of a sudden it was 8pm, time for my W6SFM CW net (which i’m missing this evening).

The following signal reports are based on the traffic round.

Mindy W7ZAP is the strongest at 5 to 10 dB
(I didn’t get here in time to listen to Doug’s signal.)
I didn’t catch Howard’s KB6NN signal.
Jaye KE6SLS was -6 dB and 100% print
Gene W1EEP was a strong 6 dB, and I copied his flamp 100%
Christine AF7OK was about 2 dB with 100% flamp copy
Dave K7DV barely visible at 10% print
Erik KK6RKY ditto at 10% or less
Charles W5CLE ditto at 10T or less
Steve K6ETA 0 dB and 100% flamp copy

I hope Doug’s fist, er hand, is healing fast!
Good job taking over as NCS, Mindy!

73 and a Good Night to you all!
