Summer fades into Fall and 80m band condx are noticeably better. Two of our long-time members, Dave K7DV in Idaho Falls,ID and Gene W1EEP in Pine Valley,UT are the beneficiaries. Thanks to both of them for their patience and persistence over many years. Although this is not a new phenomena to them, the last three or four years have been more difficult. Summer band conditions usually exclude stations in mid-USA too. Last month, Rick K0KEX checked-in in time for Comments. It’s another sign we’re beginning to emerge from Solar Minimum.

Tonight was our last session of Summer Sked; next week we’re back to the NBEMS Exercise and Traffic Round. We’ll start with an easy Exercise using the familiar FLMSG ICS-213 form. To keep net-length reasonable, the Exercise is limited to 8 stations. Early ck-in will assure you of a slot. When there’s more than 8 Active ck-ins, we assign the additional stations an *, ie: K7KY*. These stations are Active, but not called for the Exercise/Traffic Round. They are called in the Comment Round as usual.

Ten long-term ORCA Ops have a pre-assigned * to use at their discretion. They assist NCS in managing the Exercise. We’ll replace the NBEMS Exercise occasionally with a one-off Exercise, member presentation, Macro experiment, or Mode Shoot-Out. We’ll notify you a week in advance of this change. Your suggestions for Exercise alternatives are welcome.

Returning to normal ORCA format may be confusing for newer stations. ORCA has only two regular Ck-In options. Ck-in to participate in the net or monitor the net. Here’s the protocol:

SEND on 1 line:
CALLSIGN CALLSIGN (ck-in to participate, Active in all net events)
CALLSIGN CALLSIGN QNX (CALLSIGN = ck-in, QNX = ck-out, In&Out/Monitoring)
CALLSIGN CALLSIGN, NAME, QTH [QNX] (your 1st ORCA ck-in only)

Again, when Active ck-ins exceed 8 Ops, NCS assigns an * (K7KY*) to remaining Active stations. These stations sit-out the NBEMS Exercise, but are called as usual in the Comment Round. Checking-in on one line is important. To compile the Roster, we highlight/copy/paste text from the RX buffer to FLMSG. We can’t begin this process until your transmission ends. The text jumps up with every line you send. Thanks for helping make ck-in easier.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Tonight is our last Summer Sked session. Next session, we return to our regular training format with the NBEMS Exercise and Traffic Round. Our Traffic Round is a simulation that completes the NBEMS Exercise. Except for Urgent/Emergency traffic, formal Traffic should be listed at Western Digital Net on Thursday.

If you’re relatively new to ORCA, please work the NBEMS Exercise and Advanced Exercise silently, logged in QNX (Monitoring), until you feel ready. We hold a brief Monitor’s Session after-net to FILL and/or CONFIRM your Exercise traffic. Work the NBEMS Exercise while Monitoring a few times to learn the routines w/o time pressure.

When you ck-in Active to work the NBEMS Exercise, keep the Roster handy and anticipate NCS calling you. The Exercise is brisk. If you’re prepared, you’ll do well. Don’t worry you might make a mistake; we all make mistakes while learning. Soon, you’ll flow thru the Exercise like a veteran.

Next session, we’ll start with an easy NBEMS Exercise using the familiar FLMSG ICS-213 form. The Exercise accommodates only 8 stations. Early ck-in will assure you of a slot. When there’s more than 8 stations for the Exercise, we assign an * (K7KY*) to those stations. They’re not called for the Exercise/Traffic Round, but are called for Comments as usual. Ten long-term ORCA Ops are authorized to assign themselves an * to leave room for newer Ops when the Exercise is full.

Returning to regular format is a good time to review ORCA protocols. Our protocols keep the net focused and efficient. Close adherence to protocols makes the net easier to conduct, saves time, and sets the right example for incoming stations. THANK YOU for training and practicing with us. Your support and participation are essential. Without you, ORCA DIGITAL NET would be a footnote in Amateur Radio history.

ORCA < WA7HHE, ran across this interesting article I had to share with the net. Titled: Could a Solar Storm take down the Internet? The article states: If a solar storm struck Earth, the internet, navigation and communications systems, time synchronisation and power grids could all take a hit, causing society to grind to a halt.
Good Read:

< K6ETA Great net as usual.

So many QNX check-ins! I agree that showing up inactive each week is fine, but fr maximum learning/training, at least participating in the Comments Round will help ops get a sense of the Roster/Rotation List and pay attention when they are getting close to being called. It’s good practice and not a very big commitment of time/energy…

Regarding the Carrington-level solar storm event, keeping backup Ham equipment in a faraday cage is a good idea. A galvanized steel garbage can with tight-fitting lid works fine!

Clear skies? Not really. Had a mostly Martian sunrise, but it did clear towards evening. Had a very pretty sunset tonight. Both the tigers are in and Boot’s & me had a nice little affair listening to check-ins on ORCA DN!

Had a fun NBEMS net yesterday evening. I am amazed at how good our newer local ops are getting. Also impressed with their versatility!

Did a TON of ham work through out the day. I hope I actually got something accomplished :|

I’m about ready to start the Pi4 build. Have the cool aluminum case with the great side connectors & fan, along with an SSD 250GB drive. This machine will be doing multiple duties in the shack and I’m looking forward to seeing some great performance from it. I am still using the Pi3 for my NBEMS and SSTV work.

I tried to spy the SpaceX launch last night. Good skies but none of us spotted the rocket. Still, fun skylarking when WX is good!

Doug, I hope you are getting some relief from the back pain. Today was my first day back at PT and it certainly wasn’t fun. Goal is to build a daily PT sked for me– trying to keep what still works, working!

Brad, that’s a real concern! We’ll need to add that to a WINLINK Wednesday exercise!

Great to see you all on the net tonight! Hope all are well and look forward to a regular session NEXT WEEK!

Thanks to all for taking time to check-in, we appreciate it. Same for those who email the test images for the net report. I’ve become spoiled by the short summer nets We’ll return to our NBEMS exercises and keeping our digital saws sharp.

Summer is almost gone… where did it go?? Time is flying by. I’ve been busy making blackberry pies & apple pies the past few weeks. I’m looking forward fall & winter and rainy nights with a fire in the woodstove.

Hope everyone is doing well. Great to see all on the WF tonight!

Mindy W7ZAP
