Rats! Another NCS error. I incorrectly announced we can use digital modes that exceed 300baud. More correctly, we can use them, but not today. We must wait 30days from 13/Nov/23. I am correct that we can return immediately to using MFSK-128 & THOR-100. We eschewed those modes in deference to our neighbors @ 2500wf, not FCC rules. These modes are legal, but too wide to use w/o 1st checking the waterfall. In days past, we occasionally interfered w/stations @ 2500wf. When they mentioned it to me, I began emailing them b4 using those modes in the NBEMS Exercise. We want to practice with these super wide/fast modes so we’ll be familiar with their characteristics when timely traffic-handling is essential. Remember to check the waterfall b4 using super-wide modes. This will also help us improve Situational Awareness. Keep a close eye on TxID reports and be ready to adjust filters. We don’t ask Ops to announce mode changes, we train to stay alert for mode changes. These extra-wide modes will help us focus on TxID reports and mode signature. When FLAMP traffic is sent w/header x2, we have time to reset modes we recognize when RxID fails, or sender forgets TxID.

Speaking of errors, my station issue in Traffic Round was Op error. When Jaye KE6SLS sent his Exercise file in MFSK-128, my filter was set to accommodate 1khz wide modes. The FT-857D has some dual function buttons. I missed switching function and instead of opening the filter, I enabled Split. Mindy W7ZAP saved my bacon quickly, giving me a few moments to sort it out. The error was challenging to discover; the buttons aren’t illuminated and my eyesight isn’t 20/20. A hasty review w/flashlight sorted it out.

We still have a few ORCA Logo decals. If you would like to make your own memorial ORCA coffee mug, send a self-addressed stamped envelope to: FCC has my snail-mail address. Decal Mfg’r says they are dishwasher safe. We don’t have a dishwasher, but our mugs have been fine for about 3yrs now. We use them often.

Next session, 21/Nov/23, we’ll add Macro Tags to our Comment file. Make the 1st sentence of your Comments a demonstration sentence. Compose this sentence as you like using these Tags: <MYNAME>,<ANTENNA>,<VER>.  You’re welcome to add another Tag to that sentence. Separate that 1st sentence from your comments with a single blank line. These are variable-dependent Tags; they depend on variables stored in Configure/Misc/Operator-Station. Including Macro Tags in text files only works when the file is called by the <FILE> Tag. Otherwise, the Tags will print, not the variable. Test your Comment file w/radio off.

Good Transcontinental Digital Net news. Don AB1PH plans to call Regions 6 & 7 at the beginning, enabling ORCA Ops to Ck-In early. When the net runs long, you can QNX & QSY (-:

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Tonight’s NBEMS Exercise features FLMSG form, ICS-213.

13/Nov/23:
The FCC Commissioners unanimously voted to amend the Amateur Radio
Service rules to replace the baud rate limit on the Amateur HF bands
with a 2.8 kHz bandwidth limit to permit greater flexibility in data
communications.

“The Federal Communications Commission today adopted new rules to
incentivize innovation and experimentation in the amateur radio
bands by removing outdated restrictions and providing licensees with
the flexibility to use modern digital emissions,” announced FCC.

Announcement:,
https://docs.fcc.gov/public/attachments/DOC-398409A1.pdf

New rules:
https://docs.fcc.gov/public/attachments/FCC-23-93A1.pdf

We’ve not practiced with Modes over 300baud or ±2khz bandwidth in compliance with FCC rules and to not interfere w/our
digital neighbors. Now, we can return to using modes like 500baud PSK. We’ll again use MFSK-128 & THOR-100, both nearly
2khz wide. For these wide mode we check 1st that the bandwidth we need is clear. You’re always welcome to change Mode for
Traffic or Comments. Choose a Mode band condx are likely to support. Too fast and you may have to repeat or fill, taking
more time. Remember to turn TxID On & back OFF. NCS resets net-mode.

Tonight, we’ll ask two stations to send ORCAtest image just prior to Comment Round. Please email only these two images:
ncs@orcadigitalnet.com. We’ll learn a little about paths between net stations. We won’t publish the usual beginning/end
ORCAtest images tonight.

Next session, 21/Nov/23, we’ll add Macro Tags to our Comment file. If you haven’t configured a Comment Macro, there’s still
time. Comment Macro and and other useful networking Macros are available here: http://orcadigitalnet.com/macros/ Macro
experiments are optional. Work them or skip them as you like. We’re experimenting with basic Macro Tags. Macros are digital
Op power tools, saving time and energy.

Make the 1st sentence of your Comments a demonstration sentence. Compose this sentence as you like using these Tags:
Doug,222′ Doublet @ 80′,Fldigi 4.2.00.  You’re welcome to add other Tags to that sentence. Separate that 1st sentence from
your comments with a single blank line. These Tags depend on variables stored in Configure/Misc/Operator-Station. Including
Macro Tags in text files only works when the file is called by <FILE>. Otherwise, the Tags will print, not the variable. Test your
Comment file w/radio off.

Don AB1PH has settled on Tuesday, 1800p for NBEMS Transcontinental Net, Day & Time. For tonight, Don switched testing
20m to 40m because 20m condx are predicted unfavorable. Mode testing will be THOR-11, THOR-22, & MFSK-32. Comparing
THOR-22 to MFSK-32 isn’t helpful. We should compare THOR-22 w/MFSK-22, & THOR-32 w/MFSK-32 in the same session to
generate useful data.

Oops!  I didn’t send this file correctly   the Tags were executed   here are the Tags you’ll use next week for Comments:

ORCA < WA7JYK – Good session tonight with the Transcontinental Test net. I could hear most stations that checked in plus the
three net control stations. I was hoping they would run the faster THOR mode tests but nothing happened while I was on.
Tonight’s frequency was 7.108 which held up well for the hour I was on from 6PM to 7PM.

All is well. 73 de WA7JYK

ercaRR Tom    it’s hard 4 us to particpate in the test net now that they’ve decided on Tues evening @ 1800p .    and I’d like to

I am still finding K7KY @1508 wf and most everyone else @1500 to me. KS6M I found way over @1520 at ck-n. (This might
become my new thing, in lieu of giving signal reports.) 🙂 Here is where the built-in FLDigi pre-signal tone IS helpful. I would have
liked it or a Tune signal sent tonight by W7ZAP before the exercise. Took me a while to center back on her sig. So, I have
spent most of the time tonight @1508, but am now back  @1500 (to me, anyway).

Thanks for another interesting net. 73 to all here.

No signal reports tonight, was monitoring the 40m test and it ran quite long.

Comments

Wow glad to see the baud change happened!  Didn’t expect to see it happen that soon / fast, soon and fast isn’t a usual trait
for government 🙂.

I also checked into the 40m net and will process my fldigi capture to send to the email group later tonight.  One thing I noticed
was THOR-11 is very unforgiving on offset and all 3 NCS where at different offsets, let alone everyone checking in, had to do a
lot of micro-adjusting the offset to properly decode everyone. The mode tests where not done until 5 min before this net, I
was not pleased to see that I didn’t hear MFSK-32 or THOR-22 from any of the 3 NCS 🙁, though I did copy all 3 (though some
sporadicly) for most of the net.

AE6LJ from my perspective you are low on offset!  Our normal NCS are all spot on for me.  I think Jaye once offered to help
you tune to him (that is what I did).  Not all radios perfectly tuned on all bands, sometimes you need to experiment to find your
real offset on a given band.

73 everyone and see you all next net!  de N6FPV k

Yeah, I managed 100% copy on all FLA tonight.

75/80m is now entering long path phase.  Noted this last night while
calling Western Country Cousin’s net on 3970 at 9pm.  Closer stations
were okay, more dx stations harder to hear, some stations completely
skip and I resorted to online SDR to copy them.

Doug, your frequency drifted at end of announcements.  VFO bump?

* A strange thing happened on the ORCA DN tonight, Lamar’s radio was
on freq tonight.  What a dramatic difference in S/N.  bugger, your
comments were off freq and S/N now @ 0db. . .

I wrote ARRL regarding frequency calibration.  Hope to hear from them
soon with ideas/suggestions.  Very important for digital ops.  I plan
to make this a training session next year.

I didn’t see the AGN PLS from NCS.  Turns out chk-in macro didn’t
center my freq which was at 1480 when I came on freq.  One more thing
to investigate!  Glad Mindy was able to catch my chk-in.

Had a very busy AUXCOMM meeting.  Normally I am checked in near top
of the hour.  Much good training to look foreword to in new year.

In honor of fcc reg change, I DID invoke MFSK-128 🙂  Doug, SRI I
borked your computer. . .  🙂  I tried to leave plenty of time for
quick filter adj.  John, I didn’t read the small print!

I declined NCS for this week’s “test” but I’ll cont to monitor
nbems when things stop being a test and begin formal training and
net building.

Stay well, practice often, and make sure to have some fun doing it!
