Propagation is an equal opportunity suppressor. Even in difficult condx, some stations do well. Next week may be quite different. Digital modes and tactics enable us to pass traffic in some of the worst condx. AE6LJ Lamar in Redway,CA & John KS6M in Oakland,CA CONFIRMED the NBEMS Exercise file in a single pass of PSK-250RC2. That’s a speedy, 440wpm, but sensitive mode. Lamar & John have similar path to NCS. PSK & ODFM rock when condx are favorable.

Rainbow Canyons ARC Ops are meeting tonight, reducing our Roster and NBEMS Exercise a little. We wrapped the main net in 40min, probably an ORCA record. A few years ago, Cedar City,UT Ops were sometimes 1/3 to 1/2 the Roster. They’ve helped put ORCA DIGITAL NET on the map.

John KD0NBH in Kansas City,MO must have fine-tuned his new Loop antenna. His signal was much stronger tonight. Speaking of signals, it’s interesting to compare Net Report maps to the main page map. Main page markers display everyone who’s checked in; the weekly Net Report maps are single-session ck-ins. Comparing them reveals what’s possible and what occurred tonight.

Next week, we’ll again work with Macros during Comments. This time, we’re practicing sending traffic that containg Macro Tags. Here there are pitfalls not covered in the User Manual. Please include with your comments your actual ORCA Ck-In Macro in Text form only. Don’t execute the Macro, but copy/paste it into the TX buffer before/after your comments. Remember, we can’t include Macro Tags in a file called by Macro. Our Comment Macro, powered by the <FILE> Tag, is a good example. Once we engage the Macro Parser, it attempts to execute every Tag.

Just prior to the Comment Round, we’ll ask a Washington station to send the Path Evaluation Macro. Please inclued that image with the beginning/end ORCAtest images you usually email. We’ll publish the results.

Do you use Net Logs attached to each Net Report? We used to edit out all the HF noise and better group transmissions to make the log easier to read. This year, we stopped editing the log. It takes about an hour. So far, no one has mentioned the change leading to the conclusion we may have been editing for ourselves all these years. Now, Net Logs are raw & harder to parse, but still useful for understanding net events.

Last year, we reduced the Digital Net Schedule of recommended nets to those most similar to ORCA DIGITAL NET. We’ve since revised our thinking and returned to the original schedule. Different operations make for different learning; it’s all useful.

Remember these nets; they’re conducted by ORCA colleagues. 4 digital nets, M-Thurs on 3.581mhz,
our Western-US digital watering-hole, and one Winlink net.

Monday, Humboldt County Emergency Digital Net, 1845p/0245z, 3.581+1500, MFSK-32, KE6SLS/NCS (regional)

Tuesday, ORCA DIGITAL NET, 1930p/0230z, 3.581+1500, MFSK-32, K7KY & W7ZAP/NCS, http://orcadigitalnet.com/ (W/USA)

Wednesday, NA ID ERC Digital Net, 1915m/0215z, 3.581+1500, MT63-1kL, K7DV/NCS (regional)

Wednesday, HUMCO Winlink Wednesday Net, Matthew KN7CEI/NCS, Message KN6CEI w/CALL,NAME,QTH, https://humboldtwinlinkwednesday.net/

Thursday, Western Digital Net, 1930p/0230z, 3.581+1500, MFSK-32, K6ETA/NCS, http://westerndigitalnet.org/ (W/USA)

Thanks for taking time to practice with us again tonight. We appreciate your support. We hope to see you again next Tuesday evening.

73 Doug K7KY & Mindy W7ZAP

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Tonight’s NBEMS traffic-handling Exercise features the FLMSG ICS-213 form. Answers to the Exercise
question may be useful to everyone.

NBEMS Exercise instructions always have you change FLAMP’s receipient address from QST to something
like, ORCA/NCS or W7ZAP. We established this convention years ago when newer Ops would request Fills in
Traffic Round, a logical response to files addressed QST. QST traffic goes to everyone on frequency. We
don’t have time to Fill these files during net, but we can fill them in the after-net Monitor’s Session.

If, in the Monitor’s Session, you want Traffic/Comment Round files Filled or have questions that require more
time, we’ll ask you to wait until we process those Filling or CONFIRMING the NBEMS Exercise. We’ll circle
back to you ASAP. Thanks for understanding. The Monitor’s Session isn’t for comments, but we’re happy to
answer questions after helping those working the NBEMS Exercise.

During the main net, we call Monitoring stations for comments after the Active stations. We answer questions
and fill other net files in Monitor’s Session AFTER helping Ops with the NBEMS Exercise file.

Remember this ORCA/FLAMP convention: When there’s only you & NCS FILLING or CONFIRMING files
(1<>1), send your Report directly w/o waiting for NCS to prompt you. When there’s more than one receiver
(1<>many) & doubles are likely, NCS prompts stations in order for Reports.

Macros are on schedule for next session’s Comment Round, 21/Mar/23. 1st, we’ll ask a Washington station to
send their Path Evaluation Macro. Please email that image with the beginning/end ORCAtest images.

2nd, With your comments, please include the Macro you use to Ck-in to ORCA. Don’t execute the Macro, but
send it’s contents in text form, ie: ‘URCALL QNX ‘. Remember, we can’t send files by Macro that include
Macro Tags. If we engage the Macro Parser, it will execute Tags. All other TX methods process Macro Tags
as plain text, ie: copy/paste into TX window, FLMSG Blank form, etc.

GE all.

As of 8:00am 5.2″ of rain had fallen here in the previous 24hrs. bringing the total since beginning last Thurs.
eve to 14.8″ this morning. It has rained hard and steadily since, as well. The major highway here, 101, has
slipped out due to ground over-saturation at the Mendocino/Humboldt County line. At least all this precipitation
is no longer coming down here in the form of snow. Could be getting some respite here tomorrow and Thurs.
before the next rains start up again on Fri.

I really enjoyed the fast pace of the net this eve. excepting where I slowed it down forgetting TXid. Sorry to all
for that.
