—————

ORCA DIGITAL NET Welcomes Michael K7MSS in St George,UT. Lynden KG7SXQ also ck’ed in from St George tonight. For a low population-density state, Utah certainly has a lot of Amateur digital Operators. If the Rainbow Canyon ARC was not meeting tonight, the UT contingent would have a third or two fifth of the Roster. The band didn’t support distant stations well tonight. Keith WA0TJT in Kansas City,MO and Tim WA8HRO in Okemos,MI did manage to ck-in QNX by VidID. Their VidIDs were faint and difficult to read.

In the Optional FLAMP Exercise, we learned that our plan to let the net manage every third Comment round is acceptable by most. The self-run Comment Round is a good training exercise. We have to pay close attention to the roster. You need to know when you’re next and who to pass to.  We need to be poised to help when the next station doesn’t copy the hand-off. Two sessions out of three, we’ll run Comments as we have. We like the brief opportunity to engage with you, and some comments need follow up. Every third session, you can conduct Comments.

An apology to the newer Ops. I can get flowing along with the net and forget that some ORCA routines are complex and take time to absorb.  Moving along quickly is not only my doing; over time, ORCA veterans have learned these routines well and respond quickly when called. I unconsciously speed up with them. I was definitely getting ahead of the net tonight. When I call someone, I usually wait until the last of my signal is gone from the waterfall and a few seconds more. That’s 11 +2-3sec.  That’s usually more than enough for the average response time.  But, sometimes more time is needed. Track your position in the Roster and be prepared to respond when called.

Thanks for your patience with changes to net protocols.  While discussing the use of Q-Codes on digital nets with Steve K6ETA WDN/NCS, we realized we’re using Q-Codes for protocols we don’t actually have on ORCA. QTC, QST, QRU pertain to traffic; we’re not a traffic net. They are ck-in options for Western Digital Net, a Traffic net.  You are welcome to bring interesting bulletins and reports for practice in the Traffic Round, but most of our practice Traffic is generated in the FLAMP Optional Exercise.  If you bring traffic for the Traffic round, keep it brief.  It’s best to summarize articles and give a reference for those wishing more information. There’s no need to list practice Traffic at ORCA ck-in.

ORCA ck-in protocols has changed very little. We’ve changed ‘in&out’ to ‘QNX’, that’s all.
First ORCA Ck-In: ‘CALLSIGN, NAME, QTH’
Ck-In to Participate: ‘CALLSIGN’
Ck-In to Monitor: ‘CALLSIGN QNX’
Please ck-in on 1 line.  If we need more info, we’ll ask.

Beside a couple Q-Codes, we use a number of CW abbreviations and shorthand.  We’ll add these to the Q-Code tab in Quick-Start. Here’s some of our abbreviations:
BTN = back to net
TU = thank you
FB = fine business ( great, good2hear)
RR = roger
NIL = none, nothing heard
OP = Operator
UR = your, you are
WF = waterfall
FREQ = frequency
RADO = radio Op
HZ = hertz

In the Traffic Round, you’re welcome to use any mode you believe will be copied by the net. Remember to activate TxID before sending or you will be the only station in your chosen mode. NCS sets net mode; please don’t change mode at ck-in.  If you can’t work NCS in net mode, you won’t be able to participate in net events.

Remember Western Digital Net on Thursday evenings with Steve K6ETA/NCS. 1930p/0230z, 3.581+1500, MFSK-32. Steve is looking for Ops interested in learning the NCS role; you can do this among supportive colleagues and solid back-up by Steve. He will need experienced back-up NCS for busy times. Running a digital net is actually interesting and engaging. I think you’ll enjoy it. Most of you have the knowledge and experience necessary to be back-up NCS. ‘Stuck at home’ is a good time to extend your digital skills.

Thanks for working with us again tonight. We hope to see you again next Tuesday evening.  73 Doug K7KY

ANNOUNCEMENTS 14/Apr/2020

Tonight’s FLAMP Exercise distributes the file, ‘ex165.txt’, an FLDIGI/FLMSG/FLAMP
exercise. If you complete the OPTIONAL exercise within, send that file to NCS in
the Traffic Round with FLAMP.

The net-directed Comment Round worked very well. Thank you. We’ll continue turning the
net over to you for the Comment Round; maybe not every session. You did so well, we had
little to do and missed the brief exchanges we have with you )-: We’d like to run two Comment
Rounds and let you run every third round. We’ll see what you think in the FLAMP Optional
Exercise tonight.

We’ve changed our Ck-In protocol to include QNX. ‘URCALL In&Out’ is the same as sending,
‘URCALL QNX’, ie: I want to ck-in and be excused from the net. When you send only, ‘URCALL’,
Active ck-in is assumed. You’re checking in or you wouldn’t be sending NCS your callsign.
Brief and concise is a radio communication axiom. To Monitor (in&out), send, ‘URCALL QNX’.
Again, ck-in is assumed.

See ‘Ck-In/Out’ Tab: http://orcadigitalnet.com/quick-start/

On any net, learn net protocol and send only what NCS wants. Check-in can be busy on
digital nets; remember not to coat-tail the previous station. Give NCS time to acknowledge
that station before sending. Remember too, check-in is prime time for doubles; pre-toning is
necessary.

During the Traffic and Comment rounds, reports and observations about the COVID-19
Pandemic are welcome. We’ve added a COVID-19 Self-Help and Information page to the
website. It has useful information for avoiding and treating COVID-19 infection.
Much of this self-help information is unavailable at mainstream news sites.

Thanks for emailing the Test images to: ncs@orcadigitalnet.com

K7KY < K6ETA A big thanks to Doug K7KY, Mindy W7ZAP and all ORCA ops over the last seven years. If it weren’t for all these dedicated ops fine-tuning digital net conventions and keeping their skills sharp, we wouldn’t have such a great network of relay stations.

Kudos from the spin-off Net on Thusdays, the Western Digital Net! As Adam West once said, “Same Bat-Time, Same-Bat Channel!” (just a different day).

Good to see the new stations — see you more often!

Really cool to see the new ORCA diginet check-in protocol. Looks and reads very sharp on my old eyes, and very efficient too!

I sort of like the new comment round. I was concerned that I would follow a station I can’t copy, HOWEVER, it makes me more aware of the net and the members. Good work ORCA!

It still bugs me that to send an FLmsg with FLamp, FLamp insists on encoding it! This adds 30-40% more un-needed overhead. Hope the hackers can fix that for next release of FLamp.

We had a beautiful day here in Eureka! today. My temp said it got up to 65 Degrees F, so that is the hottest day in the last 80 days. Cats were out ALL day. Didn’t bring them in until 8pm today. They’re zonkered by all the fun and sun

Unfortunately, we had one more hot case of COVID today. We sure ain’t out of the woods are we?

My friend came over today and mowed the lawn, then removed wire nuts from the new antenna and soldered the wire, it is now permanent. Sure have enjoyed the low noise and booming signals I can hear now! TU Carl km6liq!

Each Tuesday night, I check in with ORCA, then quickly qsy to 3928 for the Mendo/Sonoma Emergency phone net to check in with my neighbors. Today, I did it, but NCS asked me to become the Western Country Cousins (totally different net!) new Net Manager. . Will that request came out of left field, but I know my Cousin Bill n7ibg is undergoing some major surgery so I decided to take on the task. Should prove interesting.

Will, that’s about all from Lake Myrtletown, hope we all have a GREAT week and good weather ahead.

ORCA welcomes Michael K7MSS in St. George,UT. THOR-100 did okay given the band condx, and MFSK-64 did very well. I like both comment round options… although I miss ‘talking’ w/ea stn during comments when everyone passes it along.

Been busy around the homestead. Doug completed a multi-year project today connecting 2nd well to solar system. What a relief to have 2 working wells. Bravo Doug!!

Wishing everyone good health. Stay safe and enjoyed working with you all tonight. Hope to see you on the WF again soon!

Mindy

Shortwave Radiogram transmits digital text and images on an analog shortwave broadcast transmitter. The program is produced and presented by Dr. Kim Andrew Elliott KD9XB. Shortwave Radiogram continues VOA Radiogram's tradition testing new modes and is an interesting source for Digital Ops wishing to practice more with FLDIGI & FLAMP.
