Band condx were OK tonight, but not good enough to support MFSK-64. Mindy W7ZAP conducted the weekly FLAMP exercise in MFSK-64. Three stations did not complete the file and we easily filled the missing blocks with MFSK-32. This file, ‘ex2.txt’ is the Edit/Rename/Save exercise for next week. Please use this file for next week’s Traffic round. Eventually, we will complete this exercise in one evening. Once you’ve done it a couple times, you will be ready to edit and resend quickly.

Last week, half of our 10 check-ins were in UT. Tonight, only Gene W1EEP represented UT, the others were off to ARC meetings. Good thing we don’t all meet on the same Tues.

Remember, we are a directed net. Comments and questions are always welcome. Print your ID on the WF or send it in a lull to get NCS attention. During FLAMP REPORT round, NCS prompts you for a REPORT by sending your callsign. Wait for that prompt to avoid doubling and repetition. Our FLAMP exercises are working well in the roundtable setting. FLAMP fills and REPORTS are much simpler when you are passing traffic to one station only.

Don’t forget to try 40/80m daytime with us on Saturday 17 September, 1300p, 7.122/3.581 +1500, MFSK-32. If you don’t copy us on 40m, we’ll be down to 80m in a few minutes. Net will be brief.

I must have jinxed myself when talking with Jaye KE6SLS about multitasking. Oblivious of my net outline, I jumped to net-close after the Traffic round, forgetting the Comment round. Everyone else certainly noticed though; the WF lit up with quadruples immediately. Oops! Thanks for your patience. The waterfall was jammed with signals and gibberish for a moment, then Don WA6NBG’s report emerged from the noise. He would be the first station called for Comments and he moved right along with business as usual. Tu, Don.

Thanks for participating tonight. Your involvement contributes to our overall experience of learning and practice. I hope to see you all again next week. 73 Doug K7KY NCS

ORCA Announcements 13/sep/16

Tonight we begin the 2nd exercise in editing, saving,

and resending a received file. Details are in the file.

Mindy W7ZAP will TX this file during the weekly FLAMP

exercise. Save, Edit, & Rename this file. It’s will be

your Traffic for next week. NCS will ask for this file.

Soon, we’ll complete this exercise in one net. There’s

not much to it after you’ve done it a couple times. You

will then RX, Edit, Rename, Save, & TX the file in about

10min. More like real emergency conditions.

Last week we had 10 check-ins. Five of them in UT!

Reminder: Next Saturday, 17Sept, 1300p, 7.122 MFSK-32

We will call a brief ORCA net to explore daytime condx.

Try to check-in if your schedule permits. We’ll begin

on 7.122 and then try 3.581. If you don’t hear us on

40m, we should be down to 80 in a few minutes. Thanks

:mg:1067 Juno is a NASA space probe orbiting the planet Jupiter after entering orbit on July 5, 2016, the prelude to 20 months of scientific data collection to be followed by a planned deorbit.

It was launched from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station on August 5, 2011, as part of the New Frontiers program.

Communications are via the 70-metre (230 ft) antennae of the NASA Deep Space Network (DSN) utilizing an X band (7.153 GHz Rx 8.404 GHz Tx) direct link.

The Right Hand Circularly Polarized high gain antenna on the spacecraft is 2.5 mm (8 feet) diameter with a gain of about 43 dB (isotropic linear).

Due to telecommunications constraints, Juno will only be able to return about 40 megabytes of camera data during each 11-day orbital period. This photography downlink average data rate of less than 337 bit/s will limit the number of images that are captured and transmitted during each orbit to somewhere between 10 and 100 depending on the compression level used.

337 bits/ sec = 4 x faster than MFSK32

= about MFSK Image mode (analog FSK 1x) (color).

Not the best band condx for MFSK64, but good to learn what alternatives work and when. The FLAMP process has been a good opportunity for me to learn differnt ncs digital skills. Always learn something each week. It’s a gentle and brief moment in the hot seat… good for the brain cells!

Great message Erik, especially the MFSK32 comparison.

How many digital nets can you do a little cw practice on the side? I like that (especially when its not 25wpm+).

Good to see you all!
