ORCA DIGITAL NET 13/Feb/18 Check-in/Rotation:

Tonight, the band was better than it’s been in a long time. Tom KF7RSF and Craig KD7CL checked in from Bandon & Riverton,OR, about 50mi north of NCS, with solid signals. The distant stations in ID & UT were as strong as usual. ARC meetings kept the Cedar City,UT Ops away, hense a smaller net. Sometimes, the UT contingent is a third to half the net.

Checking in for the first time tonight was Michael K6KLF in Mill Valley,CA.  Michael is Steve K6ETA’s father.  An ORCA first for father-son members too.  I’m always impressed when I see family folks working together.  I’ve tried to interest my son in radio, but no joy yet.  You’d think it would be easy;  he was a Coast Guard AT Senior Chief and now maintains VORs for the FAA.  Michael will be pleased to know that Steve is a valued ORCA member.

The mix of active and monitoring stations was different tonight too. 7 monitoring stations, 6 active including Mindy & I, 4 actually engaging NCS. This significantly reduces net time and gives an opportunity to contact some of the monitoring stations after the Comment round. We learned that Clifford N0LKC/P has move to a campground in SE/AZ near Tombstone called Cochise Stronghold. 15w and a campground antenna put him on the roster as the most distant station tonight. He probably also merits a nod for using the least power and a field antenna.

RX: W1EEP UT

Thanks for taking time to practice digital traffic handling with us tonight. I look forward to working with you again next Tuesday evening. 73 Doug K7KY

ANNOUNCEMENTS  13 February 2018

Tonight’s Optional FLAMP exercise distributes ‘ex56.txt’, an FLMSG
/FLAMP exercise using an FLMSG ICS-213 Form. Complete the instructions
and send the new file to NCS during TRAFFIC round using FLAMP, or send
your own practice traffic in any mode or QRU.

On Thursday evening, only Jaye KE6SLS, Mindy W7ZAP, & I were up for a 160m
roundtable. Last week, 12 ORCA Ops showed up. Maybe not an enduring idea.
No problem. We’ve lots to do already.

Net.  Have moved the camp and station to far SE AZ, close to Tombstone.  Historical Apache country here, and very quiÏhere at this camp since a fire threat evacuated most everyone.  15 watts.  New distance record here for ORCA and me.

Flamp 64 mode QRM on adjacent PSK, no copy.  MFSK 32 perfect copy.  Good copy most stations down here close to Mexico.

Shortwave Radiogram transmits digital text and images on an analog shortwave broadcast transmitter. The program is produced and presented by Dr. Kim Andrew Elliott KD9XB. Shortwave Radiogram continues VOA Radiogram's tradition testing new modes and is an interesting source for Digital Ops wishing to practice more with FLDIGI & FLAMP.
