Band condx were again marginal with deep fading and other mysterious changes. For instance, we usually copy Gene W1EEP in UT and Dave K7DV in ID about the same. They’re our most distant regular stations and are good indicators of how copy will be generally for the net. Tonight, we copied both stations well, but Gene was not printing us. During the FLAMP exercise, Gene wasn’t copying anything and withdrew. Oddly, we were able to fill Dave on the third pass in MFSK-32. Sometimes propagation is good in only one direction and sometimes it becomes channelized. I’m hoping we have no Maunder Minimum and propagation begins to improve steadily for years. This winter may give an indication of what’s ahead.

It was hard to copy Aaron AG7GK and Steve W7WSV in Mesa,AZ. We heard from Dan N9BAV in Fort Worth,TX; he only copied a few broken lines from NCS, and the two nearest stations, W1EEP and K7DV. It’s important to notice these variations in propagation. In difficult times, we will be more adapt at choosing modes and determining the most efficient relay path to pass traffic. I hope condx will improve enough for Dan to participate; we’ve not had a Texas station.

Welcome to first-time ck-in Hoop K9QJS on San Juan Island, WA. We missed most of the Cedar City Ops tonight. They were attending the annual Rainbow Canyon ARC BBQ. Larry N7SND passed the BBQ and worked the net.  Thanks to each of you for your time and attention. It’s your interest and support that makes the net. We look forward to working with you again next Tuesday evening. 73 Doug K7KY

ANNOUNCEMENTS 13/Aug/2019

Tonight’s FLAMP exercise distributes the file, ‘ex132.txt’, an
FLDIGI/FLAMP/FLMSG exercise. If you complete the OPTIONAL
exercise within, send that file to NCS in the Traffic round with
FLAMP.

Although Dave W1HKJ recommends using AFC with MFSK, we find
the cursor to be better behaved w/o AFC. That was a couple years
ago and FLDIGI programming may have changed. For us, FLDIGI
seems to track MFSK signals better w/o AFC. YMMV

In an emergency, we will almost certainly be handling NTS
Health/Welfare traffic. If you’re not familiar with the ARRL
NTS form, you should begin learning this form. There’s a
learning curve to this form. ARRL instructions are widely
available online. After served-agency traffic, we will be
handling H&W traffic. Sometimes, it might be our only task.

Remember: The weekly FLAMP exercise is complex and brisk.
It’s designed to provide training and experience with the
primary traffic handling tools in FLAMP. It gives practice
in parsing and following instructions while attending to
other technical tasks. The exercise usually runs three rounds.

In the REPORT rounds, we prompt you for a REPORT with your
CALLSIGN only. We’re busy and can’t wait long for your REPORT;
you have about the time it takes for the waterfall to clear.
We may be working with a dozen stations. Stay focused. If you
miss your REPORT prompt, wait for NCS to return to you at the
bottom of the roster. REPORTing late almost always QRMs the
next Op. Most of you nail this exercise every week!

Thanks for emailing the ORCA test images.
