Great net; thanks for your focus and attention. We cover a lot of ground in an hour. We always appreciate working with you. We’ve worked numerous digital nets, some well organized and conducted efficiently, other not so much. We’ve yet to work with a more competent group of Amateur Ops. Thanks again for your participation and support. We would not be an effective training net without you.

We used HamClock to anticipate band condx this evening and may have been too optimistic with OFDM-750F & PSK-125RC5. No station CONFIRMED either mode. Both are easily upset by HF noise, fading, and multipath. MFSK-32 wrapped the Exercise for all 7 stations. To maintain 35w for these modes we have to increase RF drive 100%.

Following NBEMS forum threads brings to mind aspects of Emergency operations we don’t currently practice like off-net-freq traffic-handling and alternate frequency operations. See this post by Gordon L. Gibby MD KX4Z NCS521:
https://groups.io/g/nbems/message/18610?p=,,,20,0,0,0.

Presently, we’re unprepared for an emergency net with high-volume time-sensitive traffic. B4 Western Digital Net, ORCA ran two Emergency nets for CAL/FIRES, both short-term. Now, we have WDN for Traffic & Emergencies. We have lots of competent digital Ops, but we don’t have enough experienced NCS for an extended emergency.

Processing traffic around the clock requires changing bands to suit propagation. We’ve not practiced switching bands lately. We’re very accomplished with routines we practice regularly, but high-volume traffic and band switching are routines we need to address. Your thoughts and suggestions are welcome.

Western Digital Net still needs Net Control Stations. Ideal for WDN would be 5 NCS. Some months have 5 Thursdays and occasionally the scheduled NCS needs relief. Running ORCA NBEMS Exercises is a logical mid-step to running complete nets. It takes a little new learning & practice, but most regular ORCA Ops are well qualified. You’ll be working with supportive friends & colleagues. There’s no requirement or expectation to move on to full NCS duties. Suit yourself.

Band condx at beginning of net:

Thank you to everyone who takes time to send their ORCAtest images. Remember next week, only email the Fire Map image.

^rANNOUNCEMENTS

Tonight’s NBEMS Exercise features a plain-text file created in your PC Text Editor. All main-stream Operating Systems have a basic text editor. You can create plain-text files(.txt) w/FLMSG too. FLMSG requires a few extra steps & renaming the file. Your choice. The PC Text Editor takes less time and effort.

Next week, 19/Sep, we’ll run an NBEMS Exercise as usual and also experiment with Fire Maps. We focus on Fire Maps because it’s timely, but images are images and they can be more informative than long expository files. Images take longer to transmit and are more easily degraded than text files. Still, done correctly in reasonable condx, they can out perform written explanations. Fire isn’t their only use; messages that entail directions are prime candidates for Maps.

There’s a bit more to transmitting a useful map. We’ll explore these requirement as we progress with Maps. Grayscale Maps are the easiest to read and TX faster than color. High contrast is essential. We’ll begin with the simple Fire Map w/used years ago. We’ll send this Map just prior to Comments. Please email the Fire Map instead of ORCAtest images that session.

Remember to install the new NBEMS apps, fldigi-4.2.00, flamp-2.2.09, and flmsg-4.0.23: http://www.w1hkj.com/files. While you’re there, download the new FLDIGI User Manual: http://www.w1hkj.com/files/fldigi/fldigi_help.pdf. This Manual includes in-depth OFDM technical data in Ch.35&35.1. Data for the new THOR Modes isn’t in Ch.60.14 as you would expect. It’s in Ch.35.

By 26/Sep, those inclined to install new software versions will have done so and our NBEMS Exercise will include a Mode Shoot-Out between MFSK & the new THOR Modes. MFSK & THOR have been our go-to Modes through the Sunspot low between Cycle#24 & 25. So far, Cycle25 is better than predicted. For the 26/Sep Shoot-Out, we’ll send the same file w/different names in MFSK & THOR and compare the results. Mode speed will be determined by band condx.

Brief & Concise. If you been with us for awhile, you’ve heard this numerous times. Brief and Concise is an Amateur Radio convention, or at least, it used to be. The first Amateur Ops were always Brief & Concise. They had only CW, lots of atmospheric noise, and scant filtering. Brief and Concise was the convention. Our current Q-Codes developed in this era. Today, Brief & Concise is still important in Amateur communications. When time is critical, bands are unfavorable, the useable mode is slow, we need to be Brief and Concise. We practice Brief & Concise in all net events except Comments. The Comment Round is more verbose.

NBEMS Exercise is next w/Doug K7KY

FB nice work all around BK btn < K7KY

ORCA < W7ZAP
Tough band for OFDM-750F tonight. I was impressed to see that April W7ANC confirmed PSK-125RC5. It
was looking like only close-by stns were copying that mode well.

Here’s the breakdown of RX by modes:
OFDM-750F: 0 stns
PSK-125RC5: 4 stns
MFSK-32: 3 stns

WOW I messed with the pass band adjustments on my radio for the first time while listening to people check in, and narrowed the bandwidth to basically be just as wide as MFSK32 and I saw a 10db gain in signal strength!!! NCS went from +4 to +15! I don’t know why I never messed with that feature before!

Apperently I crashed flamp by opening fldigi then realizing it was wrong old version so I closed it and re-opening new version, which made flamp very unhappy. Based on what I saw in fldigi I think I would of gotten about 60% of the OFDM.

73s, see you all next net!

ORCA < WA7JYK – Had some openings on 10m to the midwest and east coast this past week. I’ll see how prop goes tomorrow when I sked with a friend in Texas on 20m and 10m.

We’re watching the forecast carefully for the cue to pull all the plants we overwinter into the potting shed. A lot of activity in a short period of time. I carry/roll pots to the potting shed and Kathy trims up the ones that need trimming.

I learned the hard way — although I was warned — that inadequate waterproofing will take out a satellite reception LNA in a flash – literally. That mistake cost me $50. GOES18 weather pix are arriving hourly after a swap.

Ok, I conquered my fear of mode change. YES!!!

Thanks to Doug and Mindy for another wonderful net!

All is well. 73 de WA7JYK

WOW, I HEARD Steve, w7wsv tonight 100%! Band is really getting better!

Multapathing is in full force again tonight. Multipath is just what
it sounds like: signal from two different directions and two
different times. I am actually getting ground wave and sky wave signals
here, slightly out of phase. Those who read the weekly recap sent by
NCS will be able to see my first image–note how strong Mindy’s signal
was here!

Had another fine sunny day here. Especially happy to have avoided
the smoke–the weather folks had mentioned a change in air flow which
was likely to bring smoke down here. DIDN’T HAPPEN. yeah! :)

Have so many pans in the fire now-a-days, it’s become hard to keep my
normal nets going. My friend will visit tomorrow and help me with some
long overdue paperwork and hopefully filing. I promised her a good
lunch.

Utah stations must be involved in ARC meetings. Pretty quiet tonight
without the usual gang of suspects :)

Days are getting shorter and nights a little cooler. Really not ready
for fall/winter to set in. . .

Stay well, practice often, and make sure to have some fun doing it!

Good news and bad. First the good.

FLAmp runs fine on my newer computer. So, the excessive CPU usage I mentioned last week is apparently an issue isolated to my old laptop running on Windows 7. Great! Now the bad.

The issue with blank Radiogram fields persists. Last week WA7HHE was the only station I copied 100% to fill in the Sig field during the exercise. If I load his gram first in FLMsg, every one else’s from that exercise I drag and drop in the same instance of FLMsg after his appears as signed by WA7HHE. I tried this on an newer (Windows 10) PC with Radiograms from other files and got identical results.
Not good.

Even if this turns out to be an MS OS only issue, I’d say it’s a biggie. The chances an NBEMS op might be submitting forms to a station or agency sorting through them rapidly using Windows during an event would be likely. I’m very puzzled as to why I seem to be the only one witnessing this phenomenon, however.

I botched the exercise tonight by leaving “QST” in there. Also, misspelled repeater.

Thanks for the net. 73 all.

Thanks to everyone for an orderly Ck-In. It’s easy to compile the Roster when Ck-In goes so smoothly. I’ve yet to work another digital net where NCS and all members changed mode as often and efficiently. It’s a pleasure to practice w/experts (-:

We don’t use FLDIGI’s automated Pre-Signal Tone because it goes directly from tone to content. We Pre-Tone manually w/the TUNE Button so we can stop, look, & listen for signals after tone & b4 transmitting. Using the automated Pre-Signal Tone is like honking your horn when approaching an intersection, warning others you’re coming, but having no intention or capacity to stop for traffic. Experienced digital Ops Pre-Tone b4 transmitting when doubles are likely.

Question 4 Lamar AE6LJ: When we 1st used OFDM you reported cursor moving about and no copy, I think twice. Since then, you often CONFIRM the 1st or 2nd pass in OFDM. What did you discover and what did you alter? Another ORCA Op is having a similar issue. Email if u like… Tnx

Question 4 April W7ANC: What editor did u use 4 the Exercise? Your file was the only one in binary; all others in ACCII. Ur file is correct, just different. Email if you like… Tnx

Tnx Mindy.

Two things:

one. In linux, when we use a text editor and add that to FLA, it mostly pops up a little
window USE COMPRESSION .. I always untick this and all is good. I think it’s a bug with
FLA.

Second. I don’t know if there is a “normal text editor” in MS windows. There used to be NOTEPAD but I don’t know if they still include
that. It might be helpful to ask the net if NOTEPAD still exists in MS and if so, you should specify that so folks who are still using FLM
for a text
file would instead use NOTEPAD :)

I know in linux, we have a multitude of text editors. But in MS I don’t know what they
have available. Same with Macs. No idea. Would be an interesting question for
the traffic round some time :)

Tnx for the fun and fills! hahaha, that sounds so cool.

Hi Doug. Right. I used to use abiword as it is good on ALL OS and will make a good
text file or other type of format. Like I say, just a thought. I don’t have a mac and
won’t have one, but it would be cool to find out what it offers for a pure text file
type .. I used to use MS and notepad was my goto editor forever. Fast and just got the job
done. Linux has so many, I gravitate to Gedit and it again is like notepad, but has spell check
which I really need, yet puts out a purefect text file.

Okay, will it’s 9pm and I am going to make something I can eat and call it supper :)
