When the Ops in Cedar City,UT have an ARC meeting, we really notice their absence. They are very radio-active and enthused about digital EMCOMM. They’ve become an integral component of the ORCA DIGITAL NET; we miss them when they’re away. Tonight they were away, but not out of touch; Ken KR7KR checked in&out from the ARC meeting with his tablet remote. He also checked Brad WA7HHE and Bill K6QOG in&out remotely. That’s a first for ORCA. We’ll see if Ken can get the remote to work the FLAMP exercise by itself.

The FLAMP exercise was interesting tonight. A digital signal at 2500wf was too close for THOR-100, so we QSY’d to 3.580. That provided adequate space between signals, but we forgot that ARRL/W1AW owns 3.580mhz and CW QRM began at the top of the hour w/o QRL? Two stations CONFIRMED the initial transmission in THOR-100, but it required OLIVIA-8/500 to fill the final block to an ID station. As frustrating as propagation has been lately, we’re learning much about modes and tactics for unfavorable band conditions. Thanks for hanging in there. We’re solar-minimum survivors!

Be thinking about digital training net operations. We’re looking toward retirement later this year and we hope other digital training nets will continue our work, developing effective digital tactics and enabling more Amateur Ops to learn and practice digital skills.

Don’t forget the 30MDG digital event this weekend and remember to have TxID/RxID active.
30 Meter Multi Mode Weekend
When: March 16th and 17th 2019
Where: 10 MHz – 30 Meter Band (10.100 – 10.150)
Objective: To promote experimenting and using different digital modes on the unique 30 Meter Band
Check the details: http://www.30mdg.org/news.html

Remember too our colleagues who NCS digital nets:
Monday 0145z, 3.581+1500, MFSK-32, Humboldt Emergency Digital Net, Jaye KE6SLS NCS
Wednesday 0115z, 3.581+1500, MFSK-32, NA ID ERC Digital Net, Dave K7DV NCS*
*   Dave takes early ck-ins beginning around 0045z. Have RxID active, he’s very mode agile

These images reflect band conditions. Jaye KE6SLS is close to NCS while Gene W1EEP and Dave K7DV are distant. A few weeks ago, conditions were reversed.

Thanks for working with us tonight. We look forward to seeing you again next Tuesday evening. 73 Doug K7KY

ANNOUNCEMENTS 12/March/2019

Tonight’s FLAMP exercise distributes the file, ‘ex109.txt’, an FLDIGI/FLMSG/
FLAMP exercise. We’re beginning to explore more of the FLMSG forms. If you
complete the optional exercise, send that file to NCS in the Traffic round
tonight or any net.

Now and then we look for those interested in learning digital NCS. So far
there’s been no interest. We understand; it’s a little more demanding than
working the net. We’re not looking for assistance; we’re doing well. We are
thinking about our other responsibilities and commitments. We celebrated
my 80th birthday last weekend and we’re closing the first quarter of our 7th
year at ORCA. Homesteads are a lot of work and ours is no exception.
Currently, we’ve no retirement timeline, but this year will probably be
our last. We hope some of you will take up the mission when we retire.

This WeekEnd: 30 Meter Multi Mode Weekend
When: March 16th and 17th 2019
Where: 10 MHz – 30 Meter Band (10.100 – 10.150)
Objective: To promote experimenting and different digital modes on 30m

30m is a special band. No contesting, no phone, 200w maximum power.
30m is CW/data only. Event information:

Next is the weekly FLAMP exercise with Mindy W7ZAP over < NCS

The exercise begins in THOR-100 (352wpm/1000hz). We’ll fill
in THOR50x1 (176wpm/900hz) & MFSK32 (120wpm/630hz).
CHECK UR FILTER… WIDE MODE ALERT! < W7ZAP

With a digital signal at 2500WF, we need to QSY to accomodate wide modes.
Let’s QSY to 3.580 for the FLAMP exercise. We’ll return to 3.581 for TRAFFIC round.

We had good rain today, sun in the afternoon, but also lots of wind . . This op needs a wind turbine!!

This op is feeling somewhat better, but physical activity is very limited still.

Humboldt had an outstanding phone net this Monday due to the time shift. Hope ORCA has similar condx tonight, esp with new ORCA net hours!

I used IF shift to limit the signal from nearby station xmtn trfc.. Seems to work well without loosing ORCA net.

Will HAPPY BIRTHDAY DOUG! Great to have you as a friend!

Spent some time creating new MACRO files for our Monday night net, then moved some ORCA MACROS around. I like the setup and it should help me greatly. TNX to ORCA for helping us all understand the value of MACRO FILES!

Super glad we had a light net tonight! The olivia fill was truly s l o w :)

When you asked me to relay checkings I suddenly discovered that I had the wrong macro set!!!!!
I have a signal spur on 1580 +1400 that disruppted incoming signals. Luckily NCS was strong enough to overied the spur.
I enjoy working with different forms.
Squaw Valley Resort reports that they have received 49 feet of snow this year … so far!
I think we are going to have flooding issues again this spring, though nobody is talking about flooding!

Having a digital signal at 2500WF was a good exercise to QSY, a 1st for an FLAMP exercise. Unfortunately, W1AW was an issue on 3.580 at the end of the exercise. Seems so early in the evening for the ORCA net… between DST and our new start time… looks like the band is okay too.

Hope more stations can take the time to check into the other digital nets on 3.581; Humboldt Emergency Digital (Mon) and Idaho ERC (Wed). Great to see all on the WF tonite. Hope to work with you again soon.
