We are all saddened by the passing of Brad WA7HHE’s wife MardithKB7HHB on 2 December 2017. Brad sent a beautiful tribute image of Mardith in the Traffic round. Please keep Brad in your thoughts and prayers.

Time for me to stop complaining about band condx. Tough band condx are what we train for. We couldn’t do this effectively w/o tough band condx for practice. While most stations survived the band tonight, some were unable to check in. Jaye KE6SLS was barely readable at the outset and soon faded completely. Only Mindy heard Craig KD7CL in Riverton,OR and we could not copy Pat N7QDZ in Medford,OR. These three stations are less than 100mi away. We’ll begin asking strong stations to relay check-in for weak stations and repeat the call periodically. We usually don’t have time to relay practice traffic during net; we log the relayed stations ‘in&out’ (monitors). We will practice relaying traffic from weak stations on occasion as this would be routine for a Traffic Net in poor band condx. Thanks for your patience.

Tough as the band was, images printed surprisingly well here. Even color images were near perfect. Pat N7QDZ emailed images he printed nearly perfect, although he was unable to ck-in. I’m glad to have images during Traffic. There may be times when an image will be better understood than a lengthy explanation. Steve K6ETA has been sending images from the TX screen @ 2x & 4x. These faster speeds aren’t available when sending images with the macro tag, IMAGE, as I usually do.

After Ben KE3KQ checked in from PA last week, I thought my old hope to have Dave W1HKJ check in from the east coast might be possible. Dave is our FLDIGI benefactor and I think he would enjoy seeing how we exercise his software. I’ve invited him to check in some evening if the band cooperates. Dave plans to try next week; watch for him and relay him in if I don’t hear him. W1HKJ .

Tonight’s FLAMP exercise began in THOR 50×1; a bit ambitious for condx. We needed many blocks and eventually filled everyone except Jaye KE6SLS with MFSK-32 & 16. Jaye was not heard again and we needed three relay stations to complete the message. It was a good exercise for REPORT and RELAY practice. If winter condx remain like this, we’ll be relay experts by spring (-:

Here’s some of the images from tonight’s Traffic round:

TX: WA7HHE-UT  RX: W7ZAP-OR

TX: K6ETA-CA  RX: W7ZAP-OR

Next week we’ll practice passing traffic off the net frequency. Only some stations will do this and others will pass practice traffic on-freq as usual. This change in the Traffic round is still fluid. We’d like to include everyone interested in off-freq practice, but may have to do it serially. We’ll see how much time it takes and develop an efficient routine. Please bring a one-sentence practice msg you can send to any receiver. We’re practicing the msg passing routine; the actual msg isn’t important. After ck-in I’ll call for those with ‘Traffic to List’ and select a couple Ops. For the purpose of this exercise, please list the receiver as NCS. I’ll designate a proxy. While these Ops are off-freq, we will continue with the regular practice Traffic round.

This exercise will familiarize us with the routines for leaving and returning to net. Be patient and flexible; Mindy & I are learning too. Thanks for your patience and focus during difficult condx. We enjoyed working with you tonight and hope to see you again next Tuesday evening. 73 Doug K7KY

ORCA ANNOUNCEMENTS 12 December 2017

Tonight’s Optional FLAMP exercise distributes ‘ex50.txt’, an FLMSG

/FLAMP exercise using the FLMSG Blank form. Complete the instructions

and send the file to NCS during TRAFFIC round using FLAMP, or send

your own practice traffic or QRU.

OFF-NET-FREQ TRAFFIC PRACTICE, 3rd Week, Monthly:

Beginning next week, and the 3rd Tues each month, please prepare a one

-line practice message. You can decide the recipient when you know who’s

checked in. We’ll do some off-freq messages during Traffic every 3rd

week. Otherwise, Traffic practice round will be the same. We’ll rotate

the off-freq senders so everyone has an opportunity over time.

Following ck-in next week, I’ll call for stations with ‘Traffic-to-List’.

That call is for station wishing to send their traffic to another station

off the net freq. During the Traffic round, I’ll send them off-freq to pass

their traffic and return to net. We’ll learn and practice this traffic-net

routine.

Making time for the Off-Freq Traffic exercise, we’ll skip the FLAMP exercise.

Net Report posted as soon as we can…
