This was an unusual net; only three active stations for the FLAMP exercise/Traffic round, three new stations, and a couple of software glitches to keep us on our toes. It was fast too… wrapped up in 59min. Gene W1EEP did a great job getting his response ready for the Traffic round so quickly. It’s no easy task when you’re first on the roster! Doug K7KY used THOR-100 (352wpm,1800hz) and THOR-50×1 (176wpm,900hz) with good results. With only three Active Ops, and only two passes with FLAMP, the Exercise and Traffic went quickly.

ORCA welcomes three new stations; John W0JSH in Platte City, MO, Mike AB6EW in Yuba City, CA, and Dave WB0KGN in Le Sueur, MN. What a nice surprise to have Dave check into ORCA. Dave is an active Relay station for the SATERN Digital Net (Sat NOON CT/14.065 MHz – Ken AD5XJ/NCS).

The band was so-so tonight if you were close or far away and solid for the mid-range stations. Near-by stations were light copy and MO stations VidID printed well, but they didn’t reply when I asked ‘how copy?’. By end of net, Rick K0KEX in Smithville, MO was able to work the Comment round with a signal of (S9) 5dB.

Below are Test images copied from the net:

Be sure to check-in to the first session of Western Digital Net, Steve K6ETA/NCS, this Thursday, 13/FEB/20, 1930p/0330z, 3.581, MFSK-32. Let’s support Steve and continue to hone our digital traffic skills. For me, observing digital NCS strategy and tactics helps me increase my NCS skills.  I look forward to learning more about traffic handling. It’s great to have WDN as a partner to the ORCA DIGITAL NET.

Here’s a simple ORCA Ck-In macro that sends what we want and insures TxID is off:
……….
<TXRSID:off>
W7ZAP
<TX>
<RX>
——— If you’re Monitoring only,  use this:
<TXRSID:off>
W7ZAP in&out
<TX>
<RX>
————– If you’re participating, remove ‘in&out’.  There’s a blank space before your callsign to separate your call from noise. Thanks for using the Ck-In protocol.

We appreciate you  taking the time to practice with us tonight. We hope to see you all on the WF again soon.  It’s getting easier to find friendly digital Ops for a QSO on 3.581 these days!

73,
Mindy W7ZAP

ANNOUNCEMENTS 11/Feb/2020

Tonight’s FLAMP exercise distributes the file, ‘ex156.txt’, an FLDIGI/FLMSG/
FLAMP exercise. If you complete the OPTIONAL exercise within, send that
file to NCS in the Traffic Round with FLAMP.

Hats Off to Steve K6ETA and the Founding Members of WESTERN DIGITAL NET.
Seventeen stations ck’ed into WDN last Thursday. The net was organized and
orderly with few doubles. Skilled digital Operators make a big difference.
When we started ORCA HF, we worked ck-in and Comments on Phone. Doubles
were our biggest challenge. Veteran digital Ops Pre-Tone when doubles are
likely.

Let’s make another run at parsing the Western Digital Net Ck-In protocol.

CALL Name [Priority | QRU | QST | (#)TFC for CALLSIGN | Relay]

Notice it’s all on one line. Notice too what NCS isn’t asking for: QTH, Grid
Square, WX, blank lines, etc. Send ONLY what NCS asks for on one line. Follow
the ck-in format. Ck-In is a busy time; help NCS compile the roster by sending
only what he wants.

Make a different Ck-In Macro for each digital net you work. They almost all
want different info at ck-in. If you need macro assistance, we can help you.
Careful parsing, brief and concise text, and conservation of bandwidth is
fundamental to radio communications.

Good evening to all in ORCA 2/11/2020
And welcome to Minnesota station WB0KGN Dave Le Sueur,MN Nice signal here in Washington State. It was a real shock to have FLAMP freeze up on me, but I did the FLAMP anyway by reading the text as it was sent missing only the type of form requested, used a 213 instead. Thor j100 was 14% copy Hairy!!! Enjoyed it though. Could simulate stressful conditions. Hi Hi.

This Thursday, I will attempt to enter WDN at new QTH of Port Townsend, Washington . Don’t know what kind of antenna I will get up… but will get up something.

Good recovery Bruce. We’re all having stn issues tonite!

:mg:1097 Update on the Western Digital Net

Thanks to ORCA Ops and a few random NBEMS folks we are up to 17 check-in on the last WDN!

Thanks to an offline discussion with a few founding members, we have arrived at a solid check-in procedure and have agreed on only running with two Precedence options (Routine, which is unstated and Priority).

The net now has a method for prioritizing QSAs and we are considering pushing the Comments Round to a more official close of the Traffic Round (to allow stations to check out if they don’t want to stick around to participate in Comments / dialogue. Doing this would also give a chance for relays and fills on the regional and routine QSTs.

Work on the WDN website has begun and net conventions, macros etc., will all be provided there. ORCA will be prominently mentioned, recommended and linked as well!

Thanks for all the support from ORCA Ops and to Doug and Mindy for running this great net for seven years!

Tonight I copied most stations 100% and got the THOR100 FLAmp on the first TX! Small net tonight! A less famished Doug and Mindy???
