Tonight’s net was smooth and precise, like a Swiss clock. Eight Ops checked in Active for the NBEMS Exercise. It too was brisk and efficient. We wrapped the main net in an hour 2min. Nice networking by all hands  We accomplish a lot in an hour.

Reviewing NBEMS Exercise results, a couple observations are useful.  The numerous tasks involved in handling traffic are well understood and easily implemented by ORCA veterans.  We’ve learned these traffic-handling routines well. Practice makes perfect.  We can shift some attention to more carefully parsing instructions. Of eight participants, four Aced every aspect of the Exercise. Two stations copied the correct sentence, but used .b2s & .rtf file format instead of .txt.  These modes include unnecessary control characters, making the file larger and not as widely recognized as plain_text.txt files.  One station had the format correct, but the copied a different sentence. One station nailed the traffic-handling aspect, but missed the targeted text and file format. These errors are useful; they indicate where we need more practice.

We don’t comment specifically on NBEMS Exercise results unless someone asks about their results.  We do occasionally make general observations about Exercise results.  Making mistakes while learning is integral to the learning process. No net station makes as many mistakes as your NCS hosts.  We try to profit from our errors by learning to correct and continue w/o losing focus and momentum.  We don’t expect anyone to Ace every aspect of ORCA every session. Regular practice keeps our skills sharp and enables us to see where we can improve.

Note that all eight stations executed NBEMS traffic-handling routines perfectly; four stations got file format and targeted text correct.  No aspersions on anyone. This is why we practice. There’s usually room for improvement. Tonight’s instructions were one-off from usual.  We usually write instructions in linear form; we endeavor to write them in logical and efficient order. Tonight’s instructions weren’t vague,  but they weren’t in logical order.  In emergencies, some instructions may be written under duress. We need to parse all instructions carefully; there may not be time for a 2nd attempt.

Macros again.  Next Tuesday, 18/Apr/23, we’ll ask one station to send the Path Evaluation Macro just prior to Comments. The Comment Round will be as usual. Please email that ORCAtest image to: ncs@orcadigitalnet.com. We’ll see how the net copies that station. Don’t email the beginning/ending ORCAtest images that session. We only have time to publish one or the other. On 26/Apr we’ll again work w/Macros in the Comment Round. We’ll make Macros for the off-net-frequency traffic-handling demonstration. Practice making Macros on-the-fly is useful.  Macros save time & effort.

Next month, we’ll practice the routine for passing traffic off-net-freq. This is also an opportunity to practice creating Macros on-the-fly.  The ability to create special-purpose Macros quickly saves time & typing.  For off-net-freq traffic handling, Macros are useful.  Our VidID Ck-In Macro works perfectly for getting NCS attention. NCS will see your VidID and bring you in.  You can also use a Macro to leave the net to pass/receive traffic.  Next month, Jaye KE6SLS & Matt N6FPV will demonstrate off-net-freq traffic-handling. While observing the process, be alert for where a macro is more efficient than keyboard.  One advantage of VidID on the waterfall is NCS ability to see your ID while copying another station.  When NCS is sending, the waterfall is suspended; VidIDs cannot be decoded and viewed.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

First, some thoughts about our network.  Working with you is a pleasure.  What began as a digital training net, has grown into a
network of like minded Amateurs.  Today, most of us are friends and colleagues off-net too.  We colaborate for purposes beyond
ORCA DIGITAL NET & Western Digital Net.  I’ve never enjoyed any nets as much as I do ORCA & WDN.  A few years ago, I was
struggling to understand FLDIGI’s Macro Parser.  I’d asked Dave W1HKJ, FLDIGI Developer, and he explained it to me; twice. I
understood some of it, but not all. Later, I asked Tom WB7EUX, also a computer programmer, for more insight.  I still keep Tom’s
explanation in my FLDIGI drawer and I’ve a much better grasp of the Macro Parser today.

Last month, the charge controller for Mindy W7ZAP’s radio station failed.  It was the 2nd charge controller to fail. Both began emiting
RFI and eventually stopped charging.  Our back-up controllers were too large for her system. I was keeping the battery bank up with
a plug-in charger when a package arrived with a new Morningstar Prostar 30. Lamar AE6LJ had asked if I needed a charge controller
and sent it before I replied. Thank you, Lamar.

A couple months back during a solar-system discussion on WDN, Lamar offered to send solar components to anyone who needed
them. No one replied that evening; I don’t know if anyone took Lamar up on the offer later, but the unit he sent us was perfect for
Mindy’s system. And, it’s RFI silent!

Receiving equipment in the mail is unusual; recieving information is routine. I couldn’t begin to acknowledge what we’ve learned
through our ORCA colleagues.  The range of skills, knowledge, and experience in our network is impressive. In times of need, we’ll be
grateful for all our colleagues.

Late last year, Don KJ7VGV and Bruno KG7VVN began learning to conduct ORCA NBEMS Exercises. In the process, they help refine
How-To Instructions and a set of Exercise Macros. In January, they began conducting NBEMS Exercises. Their Exercises are indistingu
ishable from ours. Hats-Off to Don & Bruno. While helping conduct net operations, they’re expanding their digital networking skills.
We appreciate the lighter work load on 1st Tuesdays.

Recently, Brad WA7HHE joined Don and Jaye KE6SLS as WDN Net Control Stations. He’s doing a great job. Hats-Off to Brad.  They
could still use another Op or two and I’ve no doubt one or two more will join them. WDN is definitely worth our effort to sustain.  We
may need an effective digital traffic sooner than we think.

Speaking of Jaye, he just spent 2.5hrs helping me sort out Linux issues with my Mint 21.1 station and my Rpi4/4.  Jaye is a multi-face
ted Elmer. Emery KE7XY recently helped me better understand the process of fine tuning FLDIGI’s RX/TX audio signals.  When FIDIGI
is correctly configured, our digital signals are optimum for decoding.  Properly conditioned, the incoming signal decodes perfectly
without excessive power.

These are just a few of the Ops that contribute to an outstanding learning/training network.  To name them all, I’d be listing 20-30
regular ORCA Ops. Thanks to each of you for making ORCA DIGITAL NET a net worth working.

With Emery’s help, I’ve taken a fresh look at Dave W1HKJ’s FLDIGI User Manual v4.1.24 detailing signal conditioning. See the RX
signal path graphic in chapter, ‘RX/TX Audio Levels’.  The graphic helped me understand the function of each adjustment.  We’re
working with digital modes designed for noisy HF conditions and low power. Correctly configured, our stations have less need for
high power.  Reread this chapter of the Manual and check your setup; Dave explains it well.

This evening we’ll use FLMSG or a PC Text Editor to create a plain-text file.  If you use FLMSG, output the file as plain text to
eliminate form content.  Small files require less time, energy, and bandwidth; important considerations when time is critical. Parse
this Exercise carefully. It’s not written in linear form.  It simulates instructions written under pressure, w/o time for reflection and
revision.

When WDN has a lot of formal traffic, we’ll need to be competent at passing traffic off the net frequency.  Next month, we’ll begin
incorporating that practice into ORCA NBEMS Exercises. Currently, Jaye KE6SLS and Matt N6FPV are interested in helping demonstra

Ham Radio this past week was fairly active for me. Several nets to check into and lots of digital activity. My 10m beacon at 28.202
has been heard less and less this past week with 6 spots yesterday. That’s down from an all time high of 283. Band is starting to fold

Ooops on mode change trying to send MFSK64 and forgot to TXiD but caught it and stopped and sent again 😄.

I’m planning to upgrade my OS.  Doing backups.  Had no idea how much
STUFF(?) was cached in my web browser!  Will, I deleted it and will
restart the backup after our net tonight.  😄  Fingers crossed that
the one click upgrade works as advertised.

Assisted two more hams with FLDigi problems.  Tonight, it was M$
windows preventing FLDigi from launching FLMsg. .  I asked the op to
setup an autostart to start FLMsg.  When he clicked ‘test’ a windows
box opened asking if it should be allowed.  I’m glad I had him do that
test.  After that, receiving an FLMsg automatically worked with his
settings under nbems.
The other ham had a terribly distorted signal.  I called him this PM
as he wanted help.  Found that he wasn’t putting his rig into data
mode, the signal I was hearing was his mic picking up sounds in his
radio shack 😄

Weather continues to improve, yet we picked up over an inch of rain
yesterday pm/early AM!  The sun is a welcome addition to my day 😄

Tip of the day:  Whenever you see NCS switch to a PSK mode, make sure
you reduce your SQL (bottom right of FLDigi) to zero.  This will give
you the very best chance at full copy of tfc.

We need to work on parsing directions requested by NCS.

The good news is spring has finally showed up in Nevada with a couple
days of 70. Bad new is now the road construction restarted from last summer
has resumed and the street is tore up and ready for pavement. Hopefully next
