Quite a net tonight.  Five new stations. Fourteen in all.  It seemed check-ins all came at once.  Good thing Mindy W7ZAP is close enough to help me keep track of the stations.  When they doubled I had partial calls and garbage.  Five stations were in&out, so traffic round was no larger or longer than usual.  With check-in taking nearly 15min it still made a long net.  We need to refine check-in.

I fell a little behind the check-in flurry and never really settled down.  It was really cool having so many Ops from ID tonight.  I’ve been visiting digital nets for the last two months and it nice to have new digital Ops drop into our net. Amateur interest in NBEMS and all digital operations are increasing rapidly.

I think our plan to divide the net when it reaches 12 check-ins will work well.  If every check-in tonight had traffic we would have needed a better format.  Following Announcements and general interest bulletins, we will send half the group to another frequency with an altNCS and continue with all stations welcome to send traffic or keyboard to the net.  Both groups will have the usual traffic and comment rounds.  Jaye KE6SLS and Ken K7IFG have offered to help as altNCS.

Rick N6IET sent our test image from Los Angeles. I seldom see the image as RX.  Here’s the images Mindy & I received:

W7ZAP_ORCA_LOGO_N6IET pic_2016-03-02_041339z
W7ZAP K7KY

The original is attached above so you can send it occasionally.  It only takes 50sec in MFSK-32 and is useful in evaluating signals and band conditions.

Again tonight we were plagued with QRM and had to QSY down to 1000wf.  These may be signals from automated stations that are not listening.  We are looking for a clear frequency around 3.580-85 on Tuesday evening.  Ken K7IFG suggests 3.583.5.

A warm welcome to the new stations and thanks to everyone who took time to work with us tonight.  It’s a great group of Ops.  I hope to see you again next week.  73 Doug K7KY

Announcements 01/Mar/16

Net reports and logs are posted together at the website on

the REPORTS page. To receive net reports by email, contact

NCS at ncs@orcadigitalnet.com.

As net participation increases, we plan to split the group after

Announcements and general interest bulletins.  Jaye KE6SLS

will take half the group to another frequency and both groups

will continue with traffic and comment rounds.  Groups will

conclude independantly.  We’ll give this a try next time we

have around 12 check-ins.

We are also considering changing the net frequency.  We are

presently in RTTY territory.  We’ve not had much RTTY QRM

so far.  We have experienced digital QRM for the last 4-5 nets.

This may be automated traffic signals.  Most digital nets are

around 3.580-85.  Take a look there when you can to see

what might be open on Tuesday evening.

Your thoughts on these changes are welcome.

No message?   Send the ORCA image (attached to email

net reports).  It’s good practice and enables other Ops to

evaluate signals and band condx and takes about 50sec.

Checking in late? Send your CALLSIGN during a lull or print it

on the waterfall.  Leaving early? Send NCS a 73.  TU

Wow! What a check in… lot’s of new callsigns. And who knew there were so many digital Ops in Cedar City, UT? :-) Nice to have you all check in & hope

to see you again. Great to see K7EK Gary, it’s been a long time (NoonTime Net). Great to see you.

Nice work sending the ORCA image N6IET Rick. Interesting to see mine compared to Doug’s with our ants. opposed at 90 degrees.

Couldn’t focus on signal reports for in/out stations… too busy trying to help Doug sort out the check-ins.
