Although we missed some of our regular digital Ops, we still had a great net.  The band was an improvement over the last few weeks and we did well on voice and digital.  There was no flamp traffic tonight, but most of us would have been ready.  We’ve had a few flamp sessions between nets and have it pretty well sorted out.  It’s not a complicated app.  Tonight we sent the ORCA b/w image at the beginning and end of the digital net.  It may prove useful for understanding changing band conditions and may help us select the best digital mode for conditions.

Now that our net is running much smoother than a year ago, I need to pay more attention to working a bit slower.  We need more time between transmissions to provide openings for late and visiting stations.  This is the second net in recent memory where one of the members needed to tell NCS there are stations trying to get in.  Peter W6IES pointed out that we need longer pauses between transmissions if we want to run digital only.  This falls to me and I’ll make a better effort to pay attention to our spacing and watch for callsigns on the WF.

Tonight was a good example.  Ken K7IFG and JB KR5RR were trying to get in at the close of the digital portion.  A couple members noticed and got my attention.  Ken had copied the digital traffic and JB was visiting for the first time.  I’m glad he wasn’t trying since the net opened!  Welcome to JB, one of my CW friends.  JB is the FRN NCS.  FRN is a CW net that meets on Sun and Mon evenings at 0300z.

Ken W7IFG is interested in experimenting with flarq.  If that interests you, get in touch with Ken, he’s on this distribution list and has time to experiment during the week.  Mindy & I are also interested.  If you need help with the new macro tags, get in touch with me.  We can still get the Beta version of fldigi until Dave releases another regular version that supports the new tags.

Don’t forget to check out the preview version ORCA DIGITAL NET website: http://orcadigitalnet.com/

Look for typo, spelling errors, general mistakes, and omissions.  Thanks for the help.  Your thoughts and ideas about additions to the site are welcome.  It will move to its own domain when it’s finished.

I’ve been visiting other digital nets lately.  I hope you will also take time to visit some of our digital neighbors.  Most of them operate on a single frequency and most use fldigi.  I think Ken K7IFG operates on a number of nets and passes NTS traffic.  It will be good to have crossover between Amateur digital nets so we can share new features and solutions to common problems.  One net I’ve visited a few times is the Idaho ARES Statewide HF Digital Net where Mike WB7RBH is NCS.  They operate in PSK-31 and use RMS Express.  Mike runs a friendly and well organized net.  Check them out: Tues 0200z 3.578 about 1300wf (I tune them here to put the signal near the center of my passband).

Thanks to each station that took time to work with us tonight.  You are the reason our net is useful and engaging.  I really enjoy working with you and I hope we continue to work and learn together.

73 Doug K7KY

:sb:55 Linix in the Hamshack podcast interview with Dave W1HJK

:mg:1001 Ran across an interview with Dave W1HJK, the lead programmer of FLDIGI, from 2011. 73, Mindy

Welcome to the first Linux in the Ham Shack for the new year! 2011 is upon us and we wanted to present our

listeners with a fantabulous new show. That’s what you’re going to get. We were able to entice the lead

developer of FLDIGI, W1HKJ, to come on the program and give us his personal insights into this best-of-class

Open Source amateur radio software.

Yes, we know we talk about FLDIGI a lot in our program. We try not to beat it to death. But if you use this

program, there is so much information packed into this interview, you’re going to learn at least a dozen things

you didn’t know about FLDIGI, even if you use it every day. So sit back, strap in, and join us on this

thrill-packed ride into the dark and seedy innards of your favorite digital mode app. We were impressed; you

will be too.
