My inability to tune Mindy’s antenna last night is a feedline issue, not another Gremlin in my station. Dead Blackberry vines were somehow blown up & tangled w/feedline at a wooden support point. When rain became heavy, vines & water created electrical path to ground. When rain stopped, antenna was again tunable. Feedline is 300ohm, the ladderline most effected by rain. It rains a lot here; this is the 1st time this antenna was disabled by rain. Tangled vines @ wood support post was the disabling factor.

A smaller than usual Roster enabled us to wrap the net in 46min. Net ran like an finely tuned instrument; nice work all around. If you missed the net, review Announcements in the Log for the upcoming transcontinental digital exercise on 17Oct. It should be interesting and enlightening. This info is also available @ source: Volunteers needed for transcontinental 20 meters NBEMS net @ nbems@groups.io. Many of you participated in a similar experiment a few years ago when we partnered with SATERN for the Coast2Coast Relay Exercise. Some of you provided mid-exercise traffic-handling training to East Coast Ops. Training and practice is key to performing well when accuracy & time are critical.

I’ve written a rough outline for off-net-freq training, but have been too busy w/medical issues to complete the exercise. I will get to it as soon as I’m able; meantime, four ORCA Ops are already experienced w/this routine. They participated in ORCA off-net-freq traffic-handling exercises a few years back. They may still have the related Macros. Naturally, these 4 Ops volunteered. People that volunteer generally end up doing most of the work and they’re time/energy may be committed today. Still, it’s possible one or two could take this project forward faster than I can. We want to learn & practice this simple routine b4 it’s needed. That could be sooner than we expect. Boy Scouts: ‘Be Prepared’. USCG: ‘Semper Paratus’ (Always Ready).

As to the NBEMS Exercise question, only Matt N6FPV knew the answer with a whiff of uncertainty. He answered, ‘B?’ (-: Anyway, no aspersions for not knowing. Exercise questions are 1st & foremost a filler that simulates message content, adding realism to the Exercise, and occasionally reinforcing previous learning or stimulating specific learning. We worked with <PUSH> & <POP> earlier this year and modified <POP> with the ‘!’ symbol. <! at beginning of Tag tells Macro Parser to execute the Tag after ending transmission, <RX>. <! is only associated with a few Tags, not all. Dave W1HKH added <!LOCK:on|off> @ our request. TU Dave!

^rANNOUNCEMENTS

Tonight’s NBEMS Exercise features an ICS-213 form and a question about Macro Tags. Remember, NBEMS Exercises are focused on traffic-handling; questions simulate message content that entails editing b4 forwarding. Don’t worry if you’re not familiar with all the Macro Tags; they’re numerous and range from simple to complex. If you’re unfamiliar with these Tags, look them up: FLDIGI User Manual 4.2.00, Ch20, Inline Macros.

If you missed our last session and Net Report, we announced the end of our ORCA DIGITAL NET leadership @ year’s end. We hope to continue until then, but that date is uncertain; we’ll continue as long as we can. Doug’s having more medical issues as he advances on 85yrs & I’m fully occupied supporting Doug, my Mother, and ongoing homestead chores. We’ve run out of time & energy. We received numerous heartfelt messages about our tenure. We’re deeply touched by your kind and supportive thoughts. We love working with you. Standing down
from ORCA is a difficult decision. We trust ORCA’s inertia will not be lost; we’ll help others carry forward what they wish to retain.

Doug’s had the 1st of 2-3 operations to remove a pre-melanoma lesion. It’s an exhausting event conducted 2.5hrs from home. His back condition makes long journeys difficult. Our path to the valley is Hwy 199, with 20mi of one-way traffic behind a Pilot car. The recent fire damage to 199 may take another month or more to clear for normal traffic. Delays can be an hour+ & no traffic passes daytime while workmen clear & repair the road.

You may have already read the following post @ nbems@groups.io Digest #1344. A few ORCA Ops have already replied to Don AB1PH’s RSVP request. Don’s looking for West Coast digital Ops in particular. A transcontinental digital networking experiment could be interesting and enlightening. ORCA Ops made a significant contribution to the combined SATERN/ORCA Coast2Coast Relay Exercise a few years ago, just B4 SATERN suddenly shuttered. We’re certain to learn something and we can share our knowledge & tactics with others.

I will be participating in a coast2coast digital test next week. Read
on the NBEMS reflector a message “Volunteers needed for transcontinental
20 meters NBEMS net: west coast participation critically needed.” I
was the first to respond and told the person you can’t get anymore
WEST then me :) Will post details following this test. Hope conditions
will be favorable since this will happen on 20m.

Our friend April w7anc today won a very important court case regarding
custody of her grand child! She did ALL the legal paperwork herself.
I am personally grateful for her tenacity and perseverance. Her grand
daughter will be in much safer and loving hands.

We have received more than an inch of rain last 24 hours. Later this
week, looks like we will have considerably more rain coming. Winter
is definitely setting in.

Short thread on QRZ forum. Silly questions are often good ones!

Band sounds amazing tonight. Looking at the light roster, I imagine
the greater Utah contingent is busy at there local ARC meetings.

I will be keeping a mental vigil for you Doug!

Matt, I had to turn up the volume as I could hear what sounded like
DOOM playing in the background! Better check your audio settings over
there and make sure the mic isn’t selected during TX! :)

DOAHHH, ae6lj and kj7vgv FLA also 100%!

Stay well, practice often, and make sure to have some fun doing it!
