Tonight’s band was OK for some and terrible for others. We also experienced another spate of QRM. This wide digital signal has appeared at 1500 our last four sessions. Last week it also hit WESTERN DIGITAL NET. So far, it hasn’t really hindered the net. We’ve printed 100% most every time. Such is Amateur Radio. We do have a lot of mavericks, but most are considerate Operators. More distracting are the Ops looking for QSOs at 1700-2000 during nets. They usually have strong signals that de-sense RX for us. It’s odd, when there are no adjacent signals closer than ARRL-CW 1khz south, that some work so close to us at 1700-2000wf. It’s disappointing to see so many digital Ops routinely working at 100+/w in modes designed for minimum power.

Thanks to each of you for working ORCA regularly and precisely. It’s your participation that completes our learning and training platform. The precision and ease you bring to ORCA makes a perfect learning model for newer digital Ops. Thanks to you, ORCA is enabling many to develop solid digital communications skills.

Some occasionally ask why we put so much emphasis on FLAMP when it’s usually not needed to pass traffic. They’re correct about it’s place in the traffic-handling tool hierarchy; it’s our best application for difficult band condx, but it’s not our default app. The weekly FLAMP Exercise is organized around FLAMP, but there’s much more to the Exercise than FLAMP. We practice selecting and combining digital tools to complete a task. We’re exercising most of our traffic-handling tools in the Exercise and components of the PC Operating System too. When you’re comfortable working the FLAMP Exercise, you’ll be well prepared to work all aspects of digital communications. Digital Traffic nets do not operate at this pace, neither do most Emergency nets. We’re practicing for tough conditions. Regular practice will help you focus and operate when the situation becomes chaotic.

With the Rainbow Canyon ARC holding their monthly meeting, our Roster was smaller than usual. Lately, we’ve been up to 33 ck-ins. The COVID-19 pandemic may be a factor driving larger Rosters. The pandemic will probably get worse before improving and we expect even larger Rosters ahead. Monitoring stations usually out-weigh Active stations 2-3:1. This creates a pileup when we call for Comments from Monitoring stations. We’ll begin calling for Monitor Comments by State/Region. That should reduce doubling frustrations.

Please don’t take the COVID-19 pandemic lightly and wait for authorities to determine your strategy. Isolation is still the only certain solution for avoiding infection. Do all you can to avoid this pandemic. A little inconvenience today, may spare you a serious disease, a disease that’s killing more people every day. Don’t take chances with your health, it’s your most valuable possession.

ORCA DIGITAL NET Welcomes Tim WB8HRO in Okemos,MI. His signal was solid in Oregon tonight.

Tonight’s FLAMP exercise distributes the file, ‘ex160.txt’, an FLDIGI/PC-EDITOR/
FLAMP exercise. If you complete the OPTIONAL exercise within, send that file to
NCS in the Traffic Round with FLAMP.

SITUATIONAL AWARENESS could not be more important than it is right now. America
seems to be very lightly effected relative to front-line States, but we have still not begun
testing patients at the level of other countries. Initially, 85% of American test kits
were faulty. Airline passangers from Italy are still entering NYC uninpeaded. Please
don’t underestimate the threat of Covid-19 considering only network news. Gather your
data widely; assess what’s working and what’s not working in other countries. If we
don’t get ahead of this virus, our hospitals and medical professionals will be
overwhelmed like those in China, Italy, and Iran. This event demands accurate and
rapid response at every level, from Global to Personal. Isolation is still the only
means of containing the virus. Avoid personal contact. Encourage your family, friends,
and colleagues to do the same. It won’t last forever. Better a little inconvenience
now, than catching a miserable life threatening infection.

The government of Shanghai, China has announced its official recommendation that COVID-19
should be treated with high amounts of intravenous vitamin C. (1) Dosage recommendations
vary with severity of illness, from 50 to 200 milligrams per kilogram body weight per day to
as much as 200 mg/kg/day.
http://www.orthomolecular.org/resources/omns/v16n16.shtml

China is treating Covid-19 patients with large doses of Vitamin C. They’ve begun long
term experiments with high-dose Vit-C treatment. Vitamin C is a good preventative.

“Vitamin C at high doses is effective in preventing viral infection and enhancing
recovery. Several mechanisms are known, including specific viral anti-replication
processes and enhancement of many components of the body’s cellular immune
system. When taken at an appropriate dose in a timely manner, ascorbate is our
best tool for curing acute viral illness.”
http://www.orthomolecular.org/resources/omns/v05n09.shtml

Thanks for your enthusiastic support for WESTERN DIGITAL NET. Steve K6ETA has established
an intuitive format and the net is already developing inertia. Just in time for the medical
emergency developing around the world. It gives ORCA Ops a 2nd weekly opportunity to connect
with colleagues and share timely information about important events. Ck-In with Steve K6ETA
this Thursday, and every Thursday evening, 1930p/0230z. Early Ck-In around 1900p/0200z,

k7ky took quite a dip (from S8 to S2) about 8:10 Pacific, but still 100%. Great test of using FLdigi/FLamp for important file exchange!

HARC has started using the ‘no touch’ rule and instead use an elbow bump in lue of hand shakes, hugs etc.

Humboldt county OES and Caltrans are conducting an exercise 25Mar2020 with the goal of finding out how Caltran’s mobile communications rig will work in the field. The goal is to contact our sister counties: Del Norte , Trinity , and Mendocino via HF and perhaps VHF. Exercise will run from 10am through noon on the 25th. This exercise is still in planning stage.

Great signals for the most part, but sadly, could not copy the AZ station tonight which is odd, as I work a lot of AZ ops on phone throughout the week. I think the time change is working in our favor.

I will miss the WDN Thursday, we have an ISS training exercise here. Only wish the ISS gear was still working :(

Great sun today. Full batteries means good RF for this old hippie!

Last week, I manually and erroneously selected MFSK-128L rather than MFSK-128 before the FLAMP exercise. The FLAMP was sent in MFSK-128, so I had no copy. Is it best to allow RSID or to select the mode manually? I see that if one selects manually, it turns off RSID, so the second sending of FLAMP would be missed as well unless one is really fast in turning RSID back on.

It is a good thing my wife opted not to visit her cousing in Santa Rosa. She has just come down with a bad cough, sinus congestion, and vomiting. No fever so far.

Today:
FLAMP 100% in MFSKO-128

W7WSV no copy because of wide QRM
K7KY macro FLAMP no copy — signal was strong but just received gibberish. No preamble?
