Have you noticed how frequently Macros are mentioned lately? They’ve been with us since the beginning, of course. We couldn’t conduct the net as it is w/o macros. We have 4 rows of macros visible and multiple sets that switch instantly. We switch between two principle sets numerous times every session. We assume that you use macros for repetitive transmissions too. For NCS, they’re essential.

We’ve published macros on our website Macro page that support ORCA net-protocols. Some are also correct for Western Digital Net. They’re easily modified for other nets. All nets vary in Ck-In protocol. Parse Ck-In protocols carefully and send only what NCS requests. You’ll be an asset on any net.

The macro topic brings up our VidID macro. FLDIGI’s Developer, Dave W1HKJ, added it at our request. It’s very useful, but does have limitations similar to kbd/text. Tough band condx can make VidIDs hard to read. Occasionally, some of the waterfall text may be clear and some obscure. That was the case tonight. We could read callsign prefixes, but the suffix was blurred. This didn’t last all evening. Near net-end, Steve K6ETA ck’ed in portable with a clear VidID. Last winter, we logged VidID stations in Michigan, Kansas, and Missouri although we couldn’t decode their text.

Speaking of Steve K6ETA, he Ck’ed in portable. He’s camping at 8,000′ near Mammoth Lakes in California with his Dad, Michael K6MLF. It must be cold at that altitude, but it makes for a great signal.

Welcome back to Michael K5MLF, Al KF5SMH, and Charles W5CLE. Charles’ return is especially welcome. The heat-storm that hit Vancouver,WA last month routed Charles to the hospital. We’re delighted to see him bounce back. Charles has been with us for years. He was instrumental in bringing a number of Vancouver digital Ops to ORCA. Today, they lead their local VHF digital training net.

We missed Dennis W6DWL tonight. Dennis is an active ORCA Op and a key member of the Rainbow Canyon ARC in Cedar City, Utah. RCARC probably has more digital Ops working ORCA than any ARC we know. Anyway, today is Dennis’s Birthday. Happy Birthday, Dennis! We wish you as many more Birthdays as you can enjoy.

A suggestion for our QNX stations, Monitors, and Lurkers. Explore the Western Digital Net on the first Thursday every month. Steve K6ETA/NCS has designated the first Thursday as Newcomer’s Net. It’s the perfect time to get your feet wet in an actual digital Traffic net. You don’t need Traffic to work the net. Steve is a veteran digital Operator who enjoys sharing his knowledge. WDN members are also friendly and supportive. WDN meets every Thursday evening, 1930p/0230z, 3.581mhz, MFSK-32. Same time and frequency as ORCA. Steve begins Early Ck-In 30min before net. Check it out.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

September 18th will be here in no time and we’ll be back to regular sessions with the NBEMS Exercise. Feedback continues to trickle in and we’re getting a broader idea of what members like and would like to have included. Reducing the NBEMS Exercise to once a month is not a popular idea. Member input indicates the NBEMS Exercise has strong support. We certainly wouldn’t drop it; it’s our main event, so to speak. It gives practice in most of the tasks necessary to digital traffic-handling. We’ll do our best to keep it fluid and mix the traffic-handling and file-manipulation routines in useful exercises.

We’re thinking to run the NBEMS Exercise every other session, using the in- between sessions for Mode Shoot-Outs, Off-Freq-Traffic-Handling, Minimum Power Experiments, Macro development, member-run exercises, etc, or an occasional Ck-In/Comment Round only. We think you’ll still find ORCA engaging and useful. We’ve little more than a month to go; let us know what you think.

That covers the Training portion of ORCA DIGITAL NET. An equally important aspect of ORCA is the strong sense of community among ORCA Ops. Many have been with us since the beginning in 2013. ORCA today is more than a Training net. It’s also a network of like-minded Radio Operators that have become friends and colleagues. We’ve come to know each other over the years and incoming Ops are soon radio comrades. Many ORCA Ops are leaders in their community; most are Elmers. We’re united by mutual interest and respect. Belonging to this team is an honor for us as Net Control Stations. Thanks for your support and participation.

The new and smarter VidID macro for ORCA & WDN Ck-In is working as it should in Windows and Linux. It may appear unnecessarily complex, but it’s working as intended. We didn’t PUSH Freq into memory on purpose. Not every station is right on 1500. If you’re a few herz or way off 1500 the macro doesn’t notice; after sending your VidID, it LOCKS the cursor at 1500. We did PUSH Mode into memory to accomodate the odd day when the nets are not running in MFSK-32. The macro ends in the original Mode. If you have any issues with the macro, let us know.

Remember, NCS cannot see your VidID while transmitting.

The COMMENT round begins with Gene W1EEP < W7ZAP

NCS < WB7EUX – GE to the net and thanks to Mindy and Doug for running it.

Nice summertime weather this week with not much smoke from the Bootleg fire in southern Oregon. Our local Elbow Creek fire is basically contained. So much so that the young firefighter who parked his trailer in our west pasture actually took a few days off. Fire managers moved the main fire camp from the Wallowa High School grounds to an indudstrial park on the west side of Wallowa. Still lots of equipment and tents in evidence when we drove through today.

All is well. 73 de WB7EUX

Good to hear ur local fire is contained. Has been smokey here for a few days… a couple new fires popped up, but no threat to us. Having these fires makes me really appreciate the firemen who work so hard.

Today’s warning from Emergency Management Magazine:
Hospital Postponing Elective Surgery as COVID Surges Hospitalizations have more than doubled in just two weeks in the Idaho Panhandle, and Washington’s Kootenai Health has the highest number of COVID patients of any hospital in the state of Idaho. “We need help finding enough nursing staff to care for the increased volumes of critical care and acute care patients,” Jeremy Evans, the hospital’s COVID incident commander, said in a news release.

Grey smokey skies here today. I don’t smell the smoke but I can feel it in my sinuses. Hopefully the breeze will pick up tomorrow and clear it out. Currently, the world is ORANGE. . . :(

COVID is now in our very own ham community. I prey they recover. Numbers in Humboldt are off the hook. I am masking 100% and no more gatherings. Lost a lot of young folks in the last week.

Had a bear of a time with my Monday night HF Digital net. FLMsg was being a real stinker. I did finally reboot the whole suite and got it going again, just hope I didn’t miss any check-ins.

Fire fire fire. Again with the LARGEST fire in history. I hope those in the path of the smoke can handle it. I hope VERY few loose their homes and NO ONE looses their lives.

Nets have been low count of late, a trend that always disturbs me. We ALL need our training to keep our skills up2par or better.

Working on painting this house–finding help is difficult. Old work mate said he would paint it next week. . Fingers crossed.

Pi4 is now here with power supply. Hope to work on that later this week. Actually, pretty excited about it!

Good to see some ACTIVE stations on tonight. I hope we can convert some of the QNX stations to join us. WE NEED ALL THE HELP WE CAN GET.

Hope you and Doug are doing well. Be safe all, stay ALIVE.

Lots of good comments Jaye. Hope you get help w/house painting. We hv troubles finding help too. I think summer time Ops are more busy w/longer days, so I don’t worry abt low ck-ins. We seem to pick up w/short days and long nites. Ur doing a great job w/ur net :-)

ORCA < K7KY VidIDs were difficult to read tonite. For Ck-In & getting NCS attention during nets, it’s best to VidID @ 2000wf. It’s where we expect to see them; sometimes were busy elsewhere and can miss them. If we do, send it again.

Please don’t send VidID @ 1500, the net working freq.

If you’re relatively new to ORCA, please let us know if you have the Ck-In Relay macro (available @ the website) so we can ask you to relay when your signal may helpful.

There are a number of useful ORCA macros available on the website Macro page.

It’s great to have Charles W5CLE back aboard!

I’m wondering what HRO gave Tom WB7TZD for all that $$$? Maybe we’ll find out next week.

SHORTWAVE RADIOGRAM

Shortwave Radiogram transmits digital text and images on an analog shortwave broadcast transmitter. The program is produced and presented by Dr. Kim Andrew Elliott KD9XB. Shortwave Radiogram continues VOA Radiogram's tradition testing new modes and is an interesting source for Digital Ops wishing to practice more with FLDIGI & FLAMP.
