Preparation and practice really paid off this evening. Solar WX seriously compromised condx on 80m. The antenna we usually use for nets wasn’t connecting many Ops during Early Ck-In. Both antenna were needed to complete Ck-In. We settled into running both stations for Ck-In and it worked well. We probably still missed a few ORCA Ops.

Difficult band condx aside, two Ops CONFIRMED the NBEMS Exercise file with a single transmission in DominoEX-22. Others decoded nothing. Along with difficult condx overall, 80m was very path sensitive. One station CONFIRMED THOR-50×1, and two CONFIRMED MFSK-32. We had one no-show. Tonight is a good indication of how well we would do with Traffic in similar or worse band condx. Imagine the difficulty of passing emergency traffic by phone in these condx. Digital is the mode for fast & accurate traffic-handling.

Jaye KE6SLS suggests we change some of our Macros that conclude with ‘< NCS’. Switching back’n forth between NCS Ops tonight made it difficult to know which NCS was sending. We practice switching off, but we haven’t needed to work simultaneously before. Our training and practice prepared us well. We weren’t rattled and the net still ran much as usual. We hope future CMEs will fall on other days than Tues & Thurs (-: Difficult condx are challenging, but we couldn’t ask for better training & practice condx.

Next session, 16/May/23, Dennis W6DLW & Ken KR7KR will send the Path Evaluation Macro just prior to the Comment Round. We’ll use these transmissions to evaluate paths between these two Cedar City,UT stations and net members. Please email these two images for publication in the Net Report. Send only their two images. We won’t publish net beginning/ending images that session.

The following session, 23/May/23, Jaye KE6SLS & Matt N6FPV will demonstrate off-net-frequency traffic-handling during the NBEMS Traffic Round. We’ll include an overview of off-net-freq traffic-handling in Announcements that evening.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Tonight’s NBEMS Exercise adds information from the Roster to an FLMSG Radiogram. Parse instructions carefully.
Include only the data requested.

Next session, 16/May/23, Dennis W6DLW & Ken KR7KR will send the Path Evaluation Macro just prior to the
Comment Round. Please email only these two images. We don’t publish the beginning/ending ORCAtest images
when we publish Comment Round images.

On 23/May/23, we’ll have an off-net-frequency traffic-handling Exercise. Busy Traffic & Emergency nets pass QTC
(formal traffic) off the net frequency.   NCS  is primarily directing traffic, not necessarily receiving. Passing QTCs
off-net-frequency increases traffic-handling efficiency and minimizes net-time. Jaye KE6SLS & Matt N6FPV will
demonstrate this routine in Traffic Round, 23/May/23.

With Summer on the horizon, we’ve returned to 30min Early Ck-In beginning @ 1900p/2000m/2100c/0200z.

Our transition from Windows 8.1 to Linux Mint 21.1 is still incomplete.  We’ve not solved soundcard issues in the
Linux Toughbook tablets. Today, we learned they’re not Win10/11 capable.  We love these touchscreen tablets. If we
can’t solve the Linux problems, we may have to buy newer tablets.bTedteìvhSPeXÁovononSta H:

CONDX are odd.  I double checked to make sure I was heard by NCS, Mindy
indicated Doug and her were both doing check-ins.  I didn’t hear Doug’s
reply.  Now I am hearing both stations.

We are still receiving a shock wave of particles from the sun.  I think
the CME happened on May 7th and has been having a large scale affect on
north and south America.  Further north/south from equator, the more
prominent the affects.

I do have one request.  NCS often signs as NCS.  I’ve made it a habit
to sign with MYCALL/NCS.  Tonight, it’s difficult to discern with NCS
is transmitting.

Ex tonight used a trick question!  There wasn’t any NV stations that
checked in 😄

ODFM is very interesting, but doesn’t hold a candle to MFSK.

Issue tonight with FLA was I had TWO instances running, SOMEWHERE. I
was able to kill both, and restart FLA > click on FOLDERS and I had
100% copy of ex file.

Today, we had a day filled with blue skies and sunshine.  It was cool
and windy, but very welcome sign of more summer-like cndx! Battery
topped off and all is well in the shack!

Looking forward to our off-freqency ex.

PS, 100% FLA on Lamar too.

Stay well, practice often, and make sure to have some fun doing it!

Good evening fellow Orcans.

Too often when I’m struggling to copy something in an active, FLDigi, RX pane  (often, for example, a relay) the
program abruptly shuts down on me. It does so without any of the usual “Confirm Quit”, “Save Configuration”, etc.
dialog, as well. Just blip – and it’s all gone. WTF! This is not good. as now, when I restart FLDigi of course the entire
buffer is wiped. There will then be two instances of FLAmp running – one of which will now be dead, but I usually
can’t tell which one so I have to shut down both and start all over using a third. Aaarrrrgh!! This phenomenon mustn’t
be all that common as K7KY and W7ZAP could never fashion together the rosters in the way that they do with this
going on even infrequently for them.

Speaking of K7KY and W7ZAP, thanks for the net tonight. Also, thanks to everyone here tonight for being here and
participating.

Incoming CME causing geomagnetic storm. This is the 1st net in 10yrs that we’ve used my antenna instead of Doug’s
as our main ant. Wow! And yesterday we were helping a neighbor who climbed the giant old growth Douglas Fir (tree holds 1/2 of my ant) to trim a limb. We found that my antenna line is broken! Line must be glued to tree with pine pitch… YIKES! Going to have to do something in the near future. Sure glad it’s up tonight.

Beautiful, but cool WX here. Expecting 80’s over the weekend. Spring has finally sprung – yay!

Great to see all on the WF tonight.

73,
Mindy W7ZAP (using Doug’s antenna to TX this)

Tnx Doug & Mindy.   Also, I did use ODFM on this night  since I have been very currious
how it would play on cndx.  It is a good lesson for me!
Also, Lamar, you just coined a new one for me!    I like it!

SHORTWAVE RADIOGRAM

Shortwave Radiogram transmits digital text and images on an analog shortwave broadcast transmitter. The program is produced and presented by Dr. Kim Andrew Elliott KD9XB. Shortwave Radiogram continues VOA Radiogram's tradition testing new modes and is an interesting source for Digital Ops wishing to practice more with FLDIGI & FLAMP.
