* Active Stations called for COMMENTS only

Only 25 stations logged tonight; much easier than 41 stations logged last week. Large Rosters are not a problem. We’re expanding on our skill sets too. QNX is usually the largest group. All stations are Welcome, Active or Monitoring. QNX stations are learning some digital net etiquette simply by checking in correctly. They’re also committing 3.581mhz to memory as the go-to digital Western frequency for contact/information in emergencies. We have four digital nets on 3.581, Monday thru Thursday. Training/practice nets Monday thru Wednesday, and Western Digital Net, an actual Digital Traffic net, on Thursday. Who could ask for more?

You may notice that our weekly FLAMP Exercise is growing a bit thin these days.  The last two sessions, we had only three stations logged in to participate and in both sessions, one station failed to engage.  When the Exercise is so small, we seldom have the opportunity to use FLAMP Relay feature.  The FLAMP Exercise is THE main training/practice event every session. It’s the dynamic example newer digital Ops are observing and emulating.  It’s the centerpiece of our digital traffic-handling presentation. If you’re new to ORCA, you can work the Exercise silently as a Monitoring station (QNX). We hold a brief session directly after closing to take your Comments, and FILL or CONFIRM the primary Exercise and/or the Optional/Advanced Exercise.

Working the FLAMP Exercises as a Monitor removes any pressure you may anticipate in the live Exercise. Like all radio operations, these digital tasks will soon become routine for you.  Practice as Monitors at your own speed; soon you’ll be ready to work the Exercise on-the-air. When you do, begin with the primary Exercise until your comfortable. Then, work the Optional/Advanced Exercise.  Soon, you’ll be working as smoothly as the digital old-timers. You’ll be part of a weekly working example of efficient digital net operations.  At ORCA DIGITAL NET, the members ARE the net. Others are learning by watching how you work the net. Without your interest, participation, and ongoing support, your Net Control Ops would be doing something else.

Thanks for refining your focus on Ck-In protocols.  It’s important we ck-into digital nets with the information NCS wants, and don’t send extraneous or redundant information. You’re making ck-in smoother and easier for NCS. Incoming Ops are learning by observing how the membership works the net. We want to be good examples to our digital colleagues. Most members are spot on with digital netiquette; please don’t be offended when we nudge the net towards better focus and attention to detail. Long-time ORCA Ops have it nailed and we’re often preaching to the choir. If it doesn’t pertain to you; ignore it. If it does, take it as a friendly nudge to tighten your focus an improve your digital skills. We always appreciate your participation and support.

Next Tuesday, we’ll experiment with OFDM-500 following the after-net Monitors session. You’ll need FLDIGI Alpha v4.1.18.16 available @: http://www.w1hkj.com/alpha/fldigi/  Dave W1HKJ may release a stable version containing OFDM modes before Tuesday. If the Alpha is gone, install the next stable release, probably v4.1.19.

ORCA meets every Tuesday 1930p/0330z – 3.581+1500 – MFSK-32
NBEMS Software: FLDIGI, FLMSG, FLAMP. Dave W1HKJ, Developer

ORCA is a DIRECTED Net, dedicated to learning and developing
digital operating skills and practicing NBEMS traffic handling.
ORCA connects Amateur Operators with common interest in
training, information-sharing, and mutual-aid.
Practice makes perfect!

New to ORCA? See: http://orcadigitalnet.com/quick-start/

Following check-in NCS sends:

2) Rotation list
3) Announcements

FLAMP Exercise:
Have FLAMP open. Exercise is brisk, Stay focused.
Monitors can work the Exercise silently and
FILL/CONFIRM in after-net Monitor’s Session.

Traffic Round: NCS calls stations in rotation. No
practice traffic? Send ‘QRU’. All traffic is sent
to NCS; only NCS REPORTS/FILLS. NCS will fill
Traffic Round messages after net on request.

Comment Round: RX reports, observations, questions,
comments (keyboard or FLMSG BLANK Form as you like)

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Tonight’s FLAMP Exercise distributes the file, ‘ex210.txt’, an FLDIGI/TEXT-EDITOR/FLAMP Exercise.
If you complete the OPTIONAL/ADVANCED Exercise within, send that file to NCS in the Traffic
round with FLAMP.

FLAMP Exercise: We’ve heard that some new stations are hesitant to ck-in Active and work the
FLAMP Exercise. The Exercise has two parts:

1) Copy a brief file in FLAMP and Report Blocks needed or file CONFIRMED to NCS. That’s all.
2) Complete the Optional/Advanced Exercise within the primary file. Send the file generated
for practice traffic in the Traffic Round.

The basic Exercise is simple. Working the basic Exercise prepares you for the Advanced Exercise.
You may make an error. Most of us made errors while learning digital operations. It’s a training
net. We learn by observing and emulating.

If you worked the Humboldt Digital Emergency Net last night, you may have noticed that Jaye
KE6SLS/NCS replied to four ck-ins with, ‘QNX is not a Humboldt Net ck-in option’. It’s important
to read and implement each nets ck-in protocol; they’re not all the same. Every organized net
presents ck-in protocol during Ck-In and the net Preamble. If you send redundant or extraneous
text at ck-in you may slow NCS’s ck-in routine or confuse NCS about to what you want.

We have digital nets on 3.581 Monday thru Thursday. QNX is a ck-in option on three of them; the
Humboldt net doesn’t use QNX. It’s important to read and implement ck-in protocol for each net.
One macro will not suffice for all nets. When NCS has to clarify what you want, it wastes net time
and slows check in. We’re training and practicing to prepare for Traffic and Emergency nets. We
want to be assets to the nets we work. We don’t want to bring marginal operating habits to an
Emergency net where brief and concise communications are essential.

Have you tried the experimental OFDM mode developed by John KF4YFD? Dave W1HKJ has added
OFDM to FLDIGI Alpha v4.1.18.16 for testing. Download Alpha versions @:

http://www.w1hkj.com/alpha/fldigi/

Although the OFDM modes are designed for large files in excellent band condx, OFDM-500 may work
for us when 80m condx are solid. We may need modes like this to remain on 3.581 if ARRL & FCC
change the band allocation agreement and only <500hz signals are allowed on 3.581. The slowest
OFDM mode is OFDM-500, 4x MFSK-32:

OFDM-500F is four-times faster than MFSK-32 (64bps –> 250bps)
OFDM-750F is eight-times faster than MFSK-32 (64bps –> 562bps)

Next week, we’ll send traffic in OFDM-500 following the brief Monitors session after net. You’ll need
the FLDIGI Alpha version 4.1.18.16 to decode OFDM. Developer = John KL4YFD: kl4yfd@gmail.com

Thanks for emailing the ORIGINAL Signal Evaluation images to: ncs@orcadigitalnet.com (another file
location & manipulation exercise) Your test images reflect your path to NCS.

eception of the FLAMP file in MFSK128 was PERFECT.
But then the band collapsed, or at least the path between NCS and me,
and I could barely copy NCS calling me for my report.

Reception was difficult at NCS tonite. W1AW CW practice @ 500wf and the digital qso @ 2500 were desensing our radios more than usual. Some nights are like that. The band seemed to deterioriate even further by the FLAMP Exericse with deep long fades.

That’s HF radio. If we can still work in condx like tonite, we’ll be great digital Ops when condx improve.
