80m was OK or awful tonight, depending on your location. The FLAMP Exercise is usually a good measure of band condx. Three of six stations CONFIRMED THOR-50×1 in one pass; one station disappeared.  Check the test image Gene W1EEP sent. No wonder he didn’t want to work the FLAMP Exercise.  We like Gene to work the Exercise when condx make copy difficult for him.  The need for Fills makes opportunities for others to Relay, an important FLAMP feature to practice.

Although FLAMP’s Relay feature is simple, there are a few things to know and check before clicking the Relay button. NCS may ask you to Relay the whole file, or specific blocks.  For the whole file, be sure the ‘blocks’ window is clear. For specific Blocks, type them into the ‘blocks’ window. Separate the numbers with commas. Be certain the file you’re Relaying is highlighted in the ‘Received Queue’ window. Click the Relay button.

When asked to Relay, do NOT use the ‘To TxQ’ button that transfers the file to the TX screen. This will make FLAMP see the file as new and assign a new checksum. When the checksum changes, the receiving FLAMP will not associate the blocks with the original transmission.  To Relay, always use the Relay button on the RX screen.

June 23rd will be another 3rd session where you manage the Comment Round collectively, or a volunteer runs the Round as NCS. Brad WA7HHE took over NCS duties and called the Comment Round for Western Digital Net last week. He did it on the spur of the moment with aplomb.  He either had or quickly made a macro and did an excellent job.  The NCS role is not hard, there’s just more to do. When you learn it in stages, it’s no different than the learning and practice that developed the digital skills you own today.

Having some digital NCS experience is important.  The more you know about the NCS role, the better net member you will be. You could take over if NCS goes off the air. More importantly, you will be able to call a net in time of need when no regular NCS is available.  Better someone begins the net immediately and hands it off when a more experienced NCS arrives. Learning is usually fun for most of us. We’ll help you enjoy learning new routines and tactics. Comment Round NCS is still open for June 23rd.  Don’t hesitate too long and miss the opportunity (-:

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Tonight’s FLAMP Exercise distributes the file, ‘ex173.txt’, an FLDIGI/FLMSG/FLAMP
Exercise. CONFIRM ‘ex173.txt’ before working the OPTIONAL Exercise. If you complete
the OPTIONAL exercise within, send that file to NCS in the Traffic Round with FLAMP.

For the OPTIONAL FLAMP Exercise files, we ask you to change FLAMP’s default address,
‘QST’, to W7ZAP or K7KY. Our practice traffic is not QST (information for all Amateurs);
it’s part of the Exercise sent directly to NCS. A QST should be filled to all stations.
Traffic addressed to NCS is exclusive between sender and NCS.

Have you heard of Northland Amateur Radio Emergency Services? We’d not heard of them until
yesterday, when we scanned NBEMS@groups.io. NARES membership includes a number of ORCA
members that ck-in from MO when condx permit. You’ll recoginze these Ops: Rick K0KEX, Keith
WA0TJT, Sila AK0SK, and John W0JSH. Every Sunday evening they run a digital training net
on VHF. They too transmit their club logo during nets. Following the Postamble tonight, we’ll
send the NARES logo.

June 23rd will be another 3rd ORCA session. One member can conducts the Comment round
as NCS, or you can conduct the Round as a team, passing to the next Op on the Roster. Let
us know in the Comment Round or by email if you’d like to NCS that Comment Round. Please
also consider working the Off-Freq-Relay on June 23rd. That needs two Ops.

Every session, we ask someone to Relay the call for Ck-In. You can do this easily with a Macro.
See the website for ‘Ck-In’ and other useful ORCA macros: http://orcadigitalnet.com/macros/
You can also Relay w/o a macro. Just type it in and get some on-air keyboard practice too.

Thank you for emailing Test images to: ncs@orcadigitalnet.com for the Net Report.

Net Report posted soon: http://orcadigitalnet.com/reports/

I really like the error-corrected modes so it was cool that the file was sent in THOR this time. Things are starting to feel almost normal again here. I recently

started an online course in Apache Spark for work. May revisit some math stzy serau now that I don’t have to commute any more. Really wish the rain would let up so
I can take the dog hiking. Very glad to have this net to learn and practice with. I hope everyone stays busy and healthy. 73s.

Had 100% sunshine today. At least up into the 70 degree mark.

Carl came over today and mowed the lawn AGAIN, then we talked about doing some future antenna work for me–hopefully not too distant future! Fed him a bbq hamburger

steak and huge garden salad. He will not want for food the rest of the day

S5 noise floor here tonight, kind of raspy sounding. I wonder if it is the inflatable party toy running next door? Kids are having a blast though. Ah, noise on band

has gone, and I realize the blow-up thing is off. Who knew they would cause RFI?

Pain from my spinal injury has been very aggressive this last week and really taking a toll on my fingers/palms. Used to type well over 100WPM, those days are sure

gone. My brother is sending me a natural supplement and I hope it might help a bit.

Never heard of NARES, but then I try to avoid the group.io thing preferring private email reflectors without the spam/scan thing.

I kind of like doing the “hand off” but would be just as happy with a guest NCS for comments too.

Wonderful seeing all you on the WF tonight.

Stay safe, stay well!

Tnx Jaye good report ur 20over9 & 8-10db now BK Next 4 Comments is Steve K6ETA < NCS

< K6ETA Tonight I’m on emergency power as PG&E has our sidewalk dug up.

It’s kind of amazing what you can do with a few 100 AH batteries, two pure sine wave 1KW inverters and a bunch of 100W solar panels! Our internet is up, wifi all good,

refrigerator humming and big screen TV in operation.

My shack has been off grid for almost ten years, so no change there.

Anyway, it’s a good idea to be ready for these things everyone!

Good band condx for a change as we have a bunch of minor flares (15 if you believe it) and my friends in Australia, NZ and Tasmania sound like they’re next door!

Almost every night for a week.

Anyway, even as the Sun wakes up, digital comms on HF will continue to be powerful and VERY reliable. Glad so many ops are doing it!

Thanks for your patience Mindy. I errored twice: not knowing how to relay (do now) and had my radio in test mode during the FLAMP exercise.

Rather wet this past week and hard to work outside in the gardens and the pastures. We over winter about 50 geranium pots plus plant another 100 pots with annuals.

They’re sitting in the potting shed and a flatbed trailer in the garage awaiting the departure of near freezing temps before we place them. All is well. Thanks and

73 from Joseph, Oregon.

Never know what kind of band we’ll find. Hoping it continue to improve as net progresses.

QUICK HOW-TO RELAY FLAMP: On RX Tab, 3/4 way down the screen:
[Relay] [Fetch] buttons & blocks field:
Add the missing block numbers by hand to the blocks field: 3,6

You could click the “Fetch” button and it will automatically add all the reported missing blocks. Not handy to use when most stns have been filled. Good to know how to

do by hand also. To send the relay, click “Relay” button. Can practice following net if you like.

Good to see all on the WF tonight. Hope everyone is doing well and enjoying good WX.
