Tonight we experienced fluctuating band conditions with better results than usual. We knew the band was in flux at check-in when I asked Greg KG7DMI in Carson City, NV, to relay the call for check-in and he copied no replies to his call. However, Steve W7WSV in Mesa, AZ, did reply to Greg. I copied Steve and checked him ‘in&out’.  That’s unusual; Steve copied Greg’s relay, although Greg didn’t hear his reply. Steve didn’t hear me, but I could hear him. Wonky band for sure.

Jaye KE6SLS’s reception report noted that my signal was 3db below Doug K7KY’s signal when he ran the weekly FLAMP exercise. We both use the same doublet at 35w, so the difference was due to band fluctuations. Gene W1EEP, in UT, decoded me so poorly at check-in he changed to ‘in&out’ status. His colleague, Dave K7DV, a little more distant in ID, had a very strong signal tonight. This was the first time a over a month that we’ve had solid copy on Dave K7DV.  When the band is long and good in both directions, we have excellent path to both stations.

For the FLAMP exercise, Doug chose THOR50x1 (176wpm) and MFSK-64 (240wpm) with positive results in varying conditions. THOR50x1 CONFIRMED the message for 3 stations and MFSK-64 CONFIRMED another 3 stations. During the Traffic round, Steve K6ETA switched to MFSK-64 with good results. He was working NCS from 400 miles; he would probably stay with MFSK-32 to work Gene or Dave in ID tonight. Remember: You can send practice traffic in any mode you feel condx will support. No need to check w/NCS. Use your best judgement based on your experience with the modes; it’s not the time to experiment with unfamiliar modes. Don’t forget to enable TxID so the net automatically follows your change.

Following the net, an Elmer session developed with Doug assisting Tom WB7TDZ with sending images in MFSK.  Next, Jaye worked with Bruce KB7VX, taking him through the FLAMP routines  by relaying the exercise file in MFSK-64. Then changing back to MFSK-32 and working through the REPORT process. Thanks guys, for sharing your knowledge and stoking the fires of Ops eager to become more proficient with the FLDIGI suite.

Remember, we’d like to run another off-net-frequency traffic exercise next week. If you’d like to give it a go, we’ll set you up to succeed. It’s actually pretty simple Amateur radio QSY operations.  If you’ve done this exercise already, we’d be happy to have you work it again next week.  It’s a useful learning experience for the observers too.  You’re contributing to the learning content of the net. Contact us soon if you’re interested;  ncs@orcadigitalnet.com.

ORCA welcomes another new Op, Steve KI7L in Hatch, UT. Steve and Gene were the only UT Ops tonight as the Cedar City Ops were attending an ARC meeting. As always, we appreciate your participation, it’s what makes the net engaging and useful. We hope to see you again next Tuesday evening.

73,
Mindy W7ZAP

ANNOUNCEMENTS 09/July/2019

Tonight’s FLAMP exercise distributes the file, ‘ex127.txt’, an FLDIGI/
FLAMP/FLMSG exercise. If you complete the OPTIONAL exercise within,
send that file to NCS in the Traffic round using FLAMP.

Next week, we’d like to run another off-net-frequency traffic exercise.
A number of you have done this already. If you’d like to give it a go,
we’ll set you up to succeed. It’s actually pretty simple Amateur radio
QSY operations. New Ops or veterans, no matter. Let’s do it next week.

OT: We’re preparing for a SOTA excursion later this month. We’d like
to activate a nearby repeater site. We’re preparing a KX3 and field
doublet. We plan to work Data(MFSK-32), CW, and maybe Phone if we have
time and reasonable band condx. We’ll let you know when we’re ready;
you can spot us at the SOTAwatch website.

Our ORCA logs have 557 entries. A couple dozen are from the SATERN,
ERC, and Humboldt digital nets, but the rest are ORCA Ops. Thankfully,
they are not all still here every week. Some work ORCA occasionally
to keep their oar in the water. Some do participate every week. They
appreciate the value of practice. The usual depth of participation is
good for the net. A small net would not challenge NCS and large nets
entail too much waiting for participants.

Thanks for working ORCA using the Preamble presets. It saves time
and bandwidth, keeps us on mode and frequency, and significantly
reduces doubles. It contributes to an orderly and efficient net.

the following questions to that file and add your replies.

Is there a digital VHF net in your area? How are you involved?

No there is not one at this time, but Charles (W5CLE) and I

Going to be a warm week, mid 90’s. Time to go to the Lake Tahoe for a couple days. Rebuilt 2 packet stations yesterday. Glad to get those comm units on the air again. Hope to get a vertical and an all band dipole back on line in the next couple days. Spent a couple days at Lake Lahontan over the holiday help the Lyon County SAR, patrolling the park, and working a Command Unit. Nice WX! Lots of action on the water! Had two training session last weekend. Saturday on Winlink, Sunday on packet. Need to finallize the prep for the Tahoe Rim Trail Endurance Run, July 19 – 21. Need to send out the last / final version of documents.

Wow! Did not get a full copy of the FlAmp message tonight on the first shot! Damned Gremblins. Enough blabbb’n from here.

Have a great week.
