If you missed tonight’s net, you missed one of our more interesting nets. The band was poor and deteriorated as we progressed. Election Night reduced check-in to 10 tonight and a good thing too. Soon after check-in I was having trouble copying some stations. The weekly FLAMP conducted by Mindy W7ZAP suffered from the deteriorating band and only one station CONFIRMED the file. Next, I lost contact with Jaye KE6SLS in Eureka,CA. Communications became more and more difficult. I was unable to copy Erik KK6RKY in Trinity Center,CA, although he seemed to be copying me OK. Mindy copied Erik somewhat better.

Then, Christine AF7OK, here for the first time, asks, ‘Do you ever try different modes when conditions are so bad?’. Duh! Of course we do, it’s a training net; we’re very mode agile! But, we weren’t mode agile tonight. At least, NCS was not agile. We have certainly experimented with many modes over the years, but condx have been pretty good all summer and MFSK-32 has been solid for most nets. I’d become comfortable with the mode and have been more focused on net flow, housekeeping, and exercises. A wake-up call, for sure. Also, I’ve been using difficult band condx to concentrate on RELAY work. We’ve done very well in learning and implementing the RELAY features in FLAMP.

After the net, Dave K7DV, Christine AF7OK, Mindy W7ZAP, & I experimented with MFSK-16, Olivia 8/500, & Oivia 8/1000. Olivia 8/500 produced the best thru-put, but is very slow. Eventually, we did OK with MFSK-16, but I think the band was also improving a bit by then. Our net policy has always been that members can change mode for their traffic. We’ve done this often, but not so much lately.

And, Christine aced her first use of FLAMP in difficult band condx and completed exercise #4. We also learned that Dave in ID has 300w available when needed. When Dave didn’t respond to my call, I assumed the band was sinking further, but no, he was away from his station for a bit. Getting no reply, I assumed deteriorating band, but Dave was just out for a Uber ride. By the time we we’re experimenting with modes, Dave was back and down to 25w; still printing well here.

After we concluded mode experiments, two stations called me that had been reading our mail. Clifford N0LKC called with 10w portable from Canyonlands Nat’l Park in UT. I think it was his first time using MFSK-32; he used to live in Eureka,CA. Mike K4WAI was also interested in information about ORCA. He may have a conflict with our net time.

So, tonight was a welcome wake-up for me. I need to keep mode and thru-put central to my focus on net flow. As a training net, better we change modes frequently; it provides more learning and practice. Thanks to everyone that participated tonight. And for those lost in the band/mode mix, hang with us, we’re all learning together. Mistakes can lead to greater understanding and skill. 73 Doug K7KY

ALL ORCA Looks like Election night is more popular than football maybe a short net tonight. Announcements follow…

ORCA Announcements 08/nov/16

Tonight, we’ll complete the file-manipulation exercise we began last

Tues using ‘ORCA_ex4.zip’; the file distributed in the weekly

FLAMP practice session. Mindy W7ZAP will send this file again tonight.

If you missed last week, you should have time to complete the exercise

during tonight’s net. If not, send practice traffic or QRU.

This exercise simulates a ‘Request for Information’ and employes

features in FLMSG/FLAMP and apps in your OS. It entails decompressing

a received ZIP file on your station PC & editing, renaming, saving, &

resending with FLMSG.

Another aspect of file manipulation exercises is writing and parsing

instructions. Instructions need to be clear and concise. Reading and

following them carefully saves recontact for clarification.

If your NBEMS/EMCOM group has exercises you think would be useful

here on ORCA, please outline them for me. Our current file

manipulation exercises are variations of an exercise conducted on

the Idaho ERC Digital Net, Tues/18:15p, 3.581 + 1500, NCS Bliss W7RUGB.

AF7OK < K7KY RR I copied your last 100% thanks for coming tonight and thanks for the suggestion we try another mode… as I said earlier, I make as many mistakes as the net Ops… I was busy focused on who was not hearing and didn’t think about our modes… we are usually mode agile, and have been luckly lately in not needing to change modes often… btu < K7KY

gCDJRGI copied all of that. Olivia is great for really bad conditions, but it is slow… Better slow than not at all. No problem, I know how many things there are to think about when running a net HI HI… AF7OK k

AF7OK < K7KY Back to 8/500 to see if you still cpy me OK < K7KY

Yes, I did copy that. But before I don’t think I copied all of it. AF7OK

AK7DV de AF7OK I copied that and it did go faster. Need to test all of the modes to figure out the best one for the conditions.

K7DV AF7OK FB Mindy W7ZAP is also copying us perfectily… Let’s jump back to MFSK-16 and see if it works now… < K7KY

Great Dave. Good to know my signal is getting out. :-) BREAK

AF7OK How copy my signal Christine? < W7ZAP

W7ZAP de AF7OK I copy you just fine. The CW person has stopped transmitting on this frequency, so that has helped, too. k

Your printing great here. Didn’t see the cw… Good they left.

Ok that’s about all I can think of … I’ll hand it back to Doug K7KY < W7ZAP

AF7OK < K7KY If the CW signal was a bit below us on the wf, it’s likely the ARRL practice CW station… Mindy & I recently reset our Band Pass Filters to eliminate that signal… My mind always wants to copy the CW while I’m trying to concentrate on the net… now, we don’t hear it any more… well, we’d best be moving along… thanks to you and Dave for working overtime with us tonight… I hope to see you both next week, when I’m hoping the net will run a bit smoother and the band will be kind to us… 73 Doug K7KY sk
