*Stations called for COMMENTS only

Tonight we changed net protocol to accommodate Monitoring stations. After Comments by Active stations, we excused all who wished to leave before taking Monitor Comments. We asked those stations to say if they needed FLAMP Exercise fills or wanted to send the OPTIONAL Exercise file. No one needed fills, but we did receive two Exercise files before closing the net. Soon after closing, Al KF5SMH in Aztec,NM called to fill Jaye KE6SLS’s WX report. We later learned from Ed KG5DGI that, ‘Al is a professional weather observer for NM weather reporting, and the message was of interest as to content and structure. He is always looking for a better format or new idea.’ There’s no end to interesting people working ORCA. Hat’s Off to Jaye for an inspiring WX report.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Tonight’s FLAMP exercise distributes the file, ‘ex186.txt’, an FLDIGI/PC EDITOR/FLAMP
Exercise. If you complete the OPTIONAL exercise within, send that file to NCS in the
Traffic round with FLAMP.

Last session, we decided to alter net-format to enable Monitoring stations to CONFIRM the
FLAMP Exercise file or submit the OPTIONAL Exercise file. This will enable more useful
interactive practice for Monitoring stations later in the evening when the band is better.

After Comments by Active stations, we’ll excuse all Ops who wish to leave and call for
Comments by Monitors. Monitors that completed the OPTIONAL Exercise and those that
need fill blocks will say so in their Comments. We’ll CONFIRM the OPTIONAL files first
and then fill stations that missed blocks during the Exercise; we’re not starting the
exercise from beginning at this late hour.

The OPTIONAL Exercise has numerous agendas. Primary is learning to work advanced file-
manipulation tasks between NBEMS and your PC Operating System while monitoring net-flow.
Knowing your place in Rotation is important to working all nets. Monitoring net-flow is the
first task in this Exercise.

If you’re relatively new to working the FLAMP Exercise, do not work the OPTIONAL Exercise
within. Just copy the Exercise file. Work with NCS to complete the file (CONFIRMED). Don’t
work the OPTIONAL Exercise until you can do the primary Exercise easily and reliably. When
you only work the primary Exercise, send QRU in the Traffic Round. The OPTIONAL Exercise
is more challenging. There are numerous tasks to accomplish while retaining focus on net-
flow and your place in Rotation. When you’re working the OPTIONAL EXERCISE, and you’re not
finished when NCS calls, send QRU or a previous Exercise file.

Do you have the latest version of the ORCA ck-in Relay Macro? It doesn’t include In&Out or QNX.
Copy @: http://orcadigitalnet.com/macros/

Please email the Signal Evaluation images to: ncs@orcadigitalnet.com for the Net Report. TU!

ORCA hr’s a quick note b4 Comments..
We heard from Bruce KB7VX today. His truck is still stuck @ the Chev Dealer in Victorville,CA. The engine mod performed by his home mechanic also damaged the

transmission. The dealer doesn’t want to work on the transmission and suggest it can be carefully driven back to Washington where he can have it repaired by a

competent shop. Yuck! His saga seems endless. He’s still sleeping in the bed of a rental truck. Bruce is also experiencing smokey air, similar to Northern California

and Southern Oregon. Ok stand by a moment < K7KY First up 4 Comments tonite is Gene W1EEP < NCS

Covid, 25 new cases in Humboldt since Friday 4sept2020

A fire that began this morning before 8 in Siskiyou County is forcing evacuations of the town of Happy Camp as well as surrounding areas and has shut down Hwy 96.

I-5 is closed in both directions just north of the Oregon border after a fire, now being called the Glendower Fire, that began this morning in the northwest edge of

Ashland blew up. Parts of Ashland have been ordered to be evacuated.

Residents Near Ruth Lake Ordered to Evacuate Due to West-Traveling Hopkins Fire

Highway 101 remains completely closed north of Willits as firefighters continue to battle the Oak Fire burning near the Brooktrails area of Mendocino County.

PG&E?s Humboldt Power Plant is Successfully Operating in ?Island? Mode, Saving Thousands From Public Safety Power Shutoffs. We have power while many other California

counties are without power through at least Wednesday.

I’m really concerned about John NX6DX who spent his weekend here building my new antenna system only to return home and find road blocks to his road. He and his

family had to evacuate yesterday and unknown when they might get to return. I just hope the fire fighters can save all the houses there in Willits! Conditions in

Eureka are very smoky with constant ash fall today. Temps hit 68 with 68 humidity.

New antenna system for HF now. John NX6DX, Steve KF6FLC and Carl KM6LIQ came over for two days and built the new antennas and masts. So for, getting very good

reports.

Fingers are crossed for John NX6DX safety as he will be working in the fire zone.

Good work on the exercise tonight!

Thanks for the news on Bruce!

73 all, hope air returns to replace the smoke.

Due to heavy smoke aloft, I was able to look directly at the sun this morning with ease. I can confirm there are no sunspots. My heart is with those suffering injury,

Weird & ominous day in Brookings,OR with smoke filled sky and brown, orange air. Jolted awake at 6:30am to the smell of smoke… not a good start. Fortunately the fire

is far from us. High winds & 90F temps… fingers crossed we make it thru the rest of our local ‘red flag’ fire wx watch w/o incident.

Tough fire wx condx for western US. Hope those effected stay safe. Arctic storm system is going to hit northern Utah with hurricane winds of up to 75 mph tonight.

de WB7EUX, Joseph Oregon. When we returned from Lostine to Joseph yesterday afternoon we encountered a steady stream of traffic going the other way – tourists

returning home after Labor Day. Wow, I thought I was back in Salt Lake City!

We covered all of our pots last night (took 3 hours) and tonight. We lost everything on the ground. Low temps (31F) are not unknown for this time of year, just not

common. We’ll have low to mid 70s and lower 80s for the rest of the week.

I neglected to turn off the irrigation system last night and set all the valves open to drain. As a result one of the distribution manifolds froze and one valve was

damaged. Unfortunately I don’t have a replacement manifold and we still have a month (at least) of watering. Tomorrow i’ll make a trip to our farm/ranch supply store

to dig up a replacement.

I completed the optional exercise. No fills needed.

All is well. 73 from Tom WB7EUX Joseph Oregon.

WB7EUX < K7KY Tom u still hr? < K7KY still here wb7eux

An apology my error I thought it was Joe W7LUX in Flagstaff,AZ relaying. good work on ur first relay we’re all about relaying these days band condx

require a good bit of relay skills lately… tnx 73 Doug K7KY

i think you got it right. i gorgot to pre-tone so i might have walked over him. anyway i really enjoy these tuesday evenings and maybe someday i’ll make fewer

mistakes. i’ve concluded that nobody is perfect, especially me and i continue to make mistakes! tnx for the net and 73 de wb7eux

RR Tom an important distinction is you’re not making the same mistake over and over we all make mistakes and this is a training net… Mindy & I make mistakes

nearly every net we’re learning the NCS role and we couldn’t do it w/o Ops like you good 2 hv u aboard 73 Doug K7KY

thanks for staying longer for this guys, and the relay Tom.
Great signal tonight Joe. 73 <W7WSnv

W7WSV < K7KY RR Steve we’ll see if this change in the net format is useful. it’s a good time for monitoring stations to work the net, late in the evening we

wanted to make it easy for monitors to fill the Exercise if needed or send their OPTIONAL Exercise file.. I’m having a time with typing tonite… I’ve had Poison Oak

for more than a week and it’s still spreading … typing is difficult 73 4 now Doug K7KY

K7KY <W7WSV it’s always better for me at this later time..thanks Doug ouch on the poison oak! 73 W7WS
