Tonight seems another typical Summer evening on 80m. Good path to some stations for awhile and poor path to others. We only needed a couple relays and the net went well, wrapping 1 minute beyond an hour. Two stations CONFIRMED or Filled files in the Monitor’s Session. Thanks to your focus and attention, the net was brisk and efficient. We accomplished a lot in an hour.

Tonight’s NBEMS Exercise question tested our retention of knowledge we gained last week about an undocumented feature in FLMSG Radiogram. Only half the respondents remembered. One was close and three didn’t know. Revisiting new knowledge soon after learning increases retention. Don KJ7VGV skewed the results somewhat; he discovered this feature and presented it last week in the NBEMS Exercise. When Don asked the question, none of us knew the answer.

We’ve made contact with East Coast digital EMCOMM/NBEMS colleagues. They’re currently experimenting with 40m propagation, preparing for a 40m daytime training net. We’ve connected w/Barry K3EUI, Pennsylvania NBEMS Net Manager. You can follow NBEMS forum threads @ groups.io. It’s an opportunity to share EMCOMM/NBEMS knowledge and skills with digital colleagues. Engaging with our Eastern friends may lead to mutual training and exercises.

We’ve not had contact with East Coast digital Ops since Ken AD5XJ suddenly closed the SATERN Digital Emergency Net a few years ago. When SATERN was active, we occasionally worked with eastern Ops. We cosponsored the Coast2Coast Relay Exercise with SATERN; we all benefited from that event. We tried for months to sustain SATERN’s Saturday training net on 20m, but were unsuccessful. Without the powerful SATERN station in Jackson,MS w/rotatable beam, none of us had sufficient signal. Ken called the net remotely from the Mississippi SATERN station from his home in Houma, Louisiana.

Next week, 15/Aug, we’ll ask two stations to send the Path Evaluation Macro just prior to Comment Round. After Ck-In, we’ll select those stations. For that session, please email ONLY the two images sent b4 Comment Round. We’ll publish those images. We won’t publish beginning/end ORCAtest images that week. Thanks for emailing images for the Net Report every week. They enhance what we learn about our signals from Reception Reports. Path Evaluation Macro instructions and image are available for download in the sidebar (right) available on every ORCA web page.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

The NBEMS Exercise this evening features the FLMSG ICS.213 form. We’ll revisit the undocumented Radiogram feature introduced by Don KJ7VGV last session. The current FLMSG User Manual 4.0, v1.8.13 doesn’t include this feature. Many of our traffic-handling strategies, tactics, and conventions are based on undocumented FLDIGI features, discovered in training and practice by disciplined and inquisitive Ops.

Don KJ7VGV’s previous session Exercise question reflects our focus on brief & concise written instructions. We endeavor to explain things clearly, without unnecessary text. Brief & Concise writing has a learning curve for most of us. We tend to write as we speak; we write more concisely when clarity and brevity is our guide. It requires practice. ORCA Ck-In exchanges only what’s essential to compile an accurate Roster. All net events exhibit brief & concise training & practice. Comment Rounds, comprised of radio and personal content, are more verbose.

Check this groups.io NBEMS forum thread: https://tinyurl.com/ebf2fzk4 & look around, there’s more to this topic. This groups.io NBEMS topic is worth a scan. It’s an opportunity to engage our East coast NBEMS/EMCOMM digital colleagues. They’re also conducting NBEMS training nets and currently experimenting with daytime 40m. Follow the thread and contribute your experience and perspective. Linking digital nets enables us to pool experience and knowledge, extending our digital skills.

We have a lot to share with digital net colleagues. We’ve been practicing and polishing traffic-handling skills for years, and we’ve accumulated extensive knowledge, experience, & skill. They may have routines and tactics we can incorporate.

We’d like to resume FLDIGI Macro exploration. If you have Macro questions or ideas for Macro exercises, send them in Comment Round or email; ncs@orcadigitalnet.com.

I started collecting the bits to make a weather station over the last year, finally got around to working on it. Over the weekend I designed and printed out the parts for the tipping bucket rain gauge. Just today as the net started the final 3D printed piece for it finished printing, so now I can test and calibrate the tipping bucket. I will keep the net up to date on the project as I go along.

73s, see you all next net!

It’s NOT hot in Eureka! However, my radio shack has no windows that
open, and it DOES get hot. 77 deg right now, with fans going. I
bought a 12″ fan today and will cobble together a mounting board for
it, and insert it in place of my attic door. It should help pull out
the hot air and pull in the cooler air from front of house. Fingers
crossed :)

Was able to cpy the amrron bulletin today and heard kb6vx, however, he
was busy giving fills so we didn’t get to QSO. Bruce was 3-5db S/N on
20m.

Don kj7vgv reported last night on my emergency digital net, first
copy of FLMsg — first in several months. Band is slowly improving!

New fire north of here. Hope they can squish it before it turns ugly.

Stay well, practice often, and make sure to have some fun doing it!

I’ve received a letter from Rocky Mountain Power advising that due to elevated wildfire risk they have install protective devices on their transmission line, causing them to be more sensitive to pwr line shorts. Which if detected will shut down power and to expect longer restoral than the typical outage. Has me seriouly contiplating a back up power system. Temps have been running 90 degs plus. Well, everyone stay cool this summer and remember we need to check into ORCA and WDN 73’s Brad

Hmmm, IDK but it’s always something :) I DID copy ks6m’s here, he was light. Interesting, he was hardly readable on the huge SDR I use on the tough book, but here, I had him 100%. I noted Don also had trouble with his signal, and I think his antenna might do better to the northwest. Hard to say. That’s why I LOVE signal reports. It really helps me conjur up WHY a signal is good here and not there etc.

Anyway, I’m going to QSY up and have a howdie with my cousins on SSB :)

RR that should satisify tinkeritus nicely… My Linux on a Toughbook tablet w/Mint 21.2 has not worked out as I hoped. I’ve still not sorted out the soundcard issue. Years back, I ran the net w/Mint 21 w/o issue, but now it may be an issue with the tablet. We’ll see.

Shortwave Radiogram transmits digital text and images on an analog shortwave broadcast transmitter. The program is produced and presented by Dr. Kim Andrew Elliott KD9XB.
