Rick’s N6IET comment sums up our band condx tonight. He said the b/w ORCA logo we use for signal evaluation looked like a snowstorm at night as it arrived in Los Angeles. An endorsement really, for the old saying that a picture is worth a thousand words. Condx at check-in were terrible, but did improve as the net progressed. Jeff N1SC in Lehi,UT could only hear Brad WA7HHE in Cedar City,UT. Brad relayed him in and he eventually connected with us directly with adequate copy as the band improved. He tried to find a relay by email too. Pretty resourceful guy. Unfortunately, I don’t have enough attention to check email during the net. But, I can provide better coverage for condx like tonight by asking one of the stronger stations to relay the check-in call. In an emergency, we would pass traffic by relay. We should work with relays in our weekly practice nets too.

The net began with 5 check-ins, but increased to 9 by the time we closed. This has become normal for ORCA and it presses me to remember to look for late and visiting stations. I like the net flow and it’s helping me work toward greater flexibility and focus as NCS. A working traffic net, especially in emergency conditions will have Ops coming and going at any time.

Doug W4WAC checked in from Grants Pass,OR, but we lost him early in the net. I didn’t get a chance to see if he wanted to send traffic or keyboard. I hope he comes back for another try. I’ve always wanted Ops from the surrounding Counties and States in case we are asked to support emergency communications. Although EMCOMM is not the main focus at ORCA, we’ve become pretty good at digital communications and would do well with emergency traffic as a group or individually in our communities. I’m frequently reminded of the skill and expertise among our members.

I think we’re doing better with the FLAMP REPORTs, but they still get easily mixed up with reception reports normally sent during the comment round. I’m always thinking of ways to make this clearer and I’m interested in your thoughts on the matter.

Mindy W7ZAP and I are learning more about our two doublets. Mindy’s works better east to west. Mine favors N-S. Rick in Los Angeles, does not hear Mindy as well as he does me, but Brad hears her better than he does me in Cedar City,UT. Mindy’s antenna will get longer and higher when we have time to revise it. Other than antennas, our station are the same and we always use the same power setting. Never more than 35w as the stations are so close.

After closing I copied this image from Jeff N1SC.   It’s good to see more use of images.  There may be times when an image will replace pages of verbal explanation.pic_2016-06-08_045739z

Thanks for working with us again tonight. I hope the experience is as useful for you as it is for me. I really enjoy working with you. Hope to see you next week too. 73 Doug K7KY

Read the Net Report/Log @: http://orcadigitalnet.com/reports/

Net Reports are posted to the website, usually by Wednesday.

Brief repeat of last week’s note:

We have two main events every net. Traffic round and Comment round.

When we have traffic in FLAMP, we go around the group directly for the

FLAMP REPORT (sent with the FLAMP REPORT BUTTON) or send,’No FLAMP/copy’.

Following the REPORT round, we return to the next station in rotation for

regular traffic. During traffic round, you can send formal or informal

traffic,or keyboard about your station, projects, whatever, as you like.

During the Comment round, we’re looking for reception reports, comments,

observations, questions, etc. It’s helpful to learn how well your signal

is received by other net members.

In summary: In Traffic round we’ll be looking for FLAMP REPORTs, sent

with the FLAMP REPORT button. In comment round, we’re interested in how

you received and decoded the other stations, and whatever else you may

want to say or ask.

A majority of legislators understand cyber threats are evolving

and pose a risk to their state.

2/3 of respondents reported their state’ current level of cyber risk is moderate to high.

67% know it’s a matter OF WHEN not if, the state will be attacked.

Respondents said their

TOP 3 THREATS ARE:

1. Criminal organizations outside the U.S.

2. Political hacktivists.

3. Criminal organizations within the U.S.

Despite understanding the risk, legislators are not as immersed in

state cybersecurity efforts as they could be.

Only 18% of respondents currently sit on a COMMITTEE with cybersecurity as part of its mandate.

80% of respondents DO NOT KNOW if their state has a cyber-emergency incident plan in place.

Governing Institute recently discovered in its survey of 103 state legislators and staff, that although legislators know the risks are high,

many are not as involved as they could be and cybersecurity gaps remain.

:sb:41 Digital modes from IBC starting Wednesday

:mg:1164 The concept of digital text modes via analog shortwave broadcast is expanding!

Beginning 8 June, The Italian Broadcasting Corporation (IBC) will add a half hour of digital text modes to its Wednesday transmission

via Channel 292 in Germany, 6070 kHz.

The entire broadcast is Wednesday 2000 to 2200 UTC, with MFSK32 followed by Olivia 16-500 at 2030-2100 UTC.

2030-2045 UTC in MFSK32 (1500 Hz): DX and media news from “Radio Passioni”, Andrea Lawendel’s blog

2045-2100 UTC in Olivia 16-500 (2200 Hz): DX Italia, news from the amateur radio world

Complete schedule and updates at http://ibcradio.webs.com/

Reception reports can be sent to ibc@europe.com

DigiDX will continue this week via Channel 292, 6070 kHz, daily (maybe not Saturday) at 0530-0600 and 1830-1900 UTC. Vatican Radio

on the same frequency at those times provides a special challenge for the digital text modes. (I hope this co-channel situation can

eventually be resolved.) This week Stephen has been experimenting with multiple modes transmitted simultaneously:

1500Hz – Olivia 16-500

2008Hz – Oliva 8-250

2300Hz – Olivia 4-125

2900Hz – BPSK-125

I don’t know just how that works with the REPORT button on Flamp RX but I found the button ok. So what should we do?

oWB6SDR When u receive an FLAMP message, the app will fill in the blocks if it can… when the file is complete or when the

transmission stops, it will have a report ready. if you got every block correctly the report will send CONFIRMED.. if not, it will send

the numbers of the blocks it didn’t copy correctly… I’ll send you one of tonight’s files and after it’s finished, you press the report

button and then OK to send the report… all else is automatic… ready for the file? < K7KY

Before RSID: <<2016-06-08T04:03Z MFSK-32 @ 1497>>

Ok I have the fear txt file report ready too

DE WB6SDR

File : Litany Against Fear.txt

<MISSING 15 AA0A>{C472}CONFIRMED

DE WB6SDR K

WB6SDR Perfect, Ralph… you copied it fully the first time… That’s all there is to it… Another FLAMP feature is RELAY…

you will see that button lower on the tab on the left side… FLAMP will relay the entire file or just the blocks that are needed… The

app is pretty smart we sometimes go around the net and collect all the blocks everyone needs… FLAMP figures this out and sends

all the missing blocks in the RELAY mode… we just started using RELAY it’s very useful when some stations copy well and other

not so well. Then, we have some who copied the whole file and has good path to those needing fill send the RELAY… btu <

K7KY

Before RSID: <<2016-06-08T04:08Z MFSK-32 @ 1499>>

K7KY de WB6SDR. OK i see the relay button too. OK I will be looking for that in future nets although I inow you have used it to

relay my past reports to those that didn’t geet a good copy. Well this helps and I think I have got the idea. So thanks and 73’s I

have to go fishing!

-Ralph

WB6SDR FB Ralph… GL with fishing… one last thought… there’s usually some confusion about the REPORTs because we also

have reception reports after the traffic round, during comments… it’s easy to confuse these two reports situations… Thanks for working

with us on the net… this net is more demanding than most digital nets, but I think it’s worth the bother if you want to really get handy

with ditital trafrffic. OK hope you have good luck with the fish,… cu next week… 73 Doug K7KY sk
