Band condx were much improved tonight; better than we’ve seen all Summer. Many stations emailing test images reported copying every station on the net tonight. That’s unusual. Logging Mark KA7ULD in Helena,MT and Rick K0KEX in Smithville,MO is a welcome sign of improving condx. Winter condx usually favor stations in mid-USA. Let’s hope condx continue to improve and we more easily connect our mid-USA colleagues.

We return to our regular training and practice format in two weeks. The NBEMS Exercise and Traffic Round will follow Announcements as before. Remember, the NBEMS Exercise can only accommodate 8 stations; we occasionally fill the Exercise in Early ck-in. When more than 8 Ops want to work the Exercise, we affix an * to their CALL (K7KY*). The * Ops are Active, but skipping the Exercise. They are still called in the Comment Round. Ten ORCA veterans have the option to self-assign an * and leave room for incoming stations. We may assign you an * when the Exercise is full.

If you’re new to the NBEMS Exercise, please ck-in QNX and work the Exercise silently until you’re familiar enough to work on-the-air. The Advanced exercise within is more complex and demanding. There’s a lot to do in limited time. The Advanced Exercise is best learned off-air. We hold a brief Monitor’s Session after every net so Monitoring stations can CONFIRM or FILL exercise files. You’ll know when you’re ready to go-live.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Doug writes all of the Announcements and he’s not been feeling well lately. He further injured his back last month; the combination of pain and pain meds makes clear thinking difficult. Since my Dad passed away, I’ve been spending a lot more time helping my Mom. Our homestead chores are ongoing and we’re letting a few things slide. A background of Global Pandemic and Political upheavel isn’t helpful. We hope to be back on track by 21/Sep/21.

ORCA < WA7HHE, Reading about the devastation from Hurricane IDA article in the Washington Post stated Wreckage from the storm included 22,567 poles, 26,729 spans of wire and 5,261 transformers damaged or destroyed, according to Entergy. Summer heat was unbearable and the Power was going to be out for weeks. Got me thinking without sunlight I’m unable to charge my radio batteries. Has me pondering how I would provide COMMS for a very long outage. Thinking lines for genset fuel would be long if available. Scratching my head. Get well wishes to K7KY < WA7HHE

Hard to comprehend the damage. No solar would be a big issue for many. Tnx for well wishes :-)

ORCA NCS Looks like conditions are good tonight. One of our local ham radio icons (Don Blanchard – WA7GTU) became a silent key a few days ago. He was a founding member of our Rainbow Canyons Amateur Radio Club (RCARC). He was well known throughout the state as well. We are all trying to come to grips with his passing. As a reminder I will not be on the net next Tuesday as this is our club meeting night. Not much else to say. Keep safe. 73 to all. W6DLW.

It’s a welcome sign when we log Mark KA7ULD in Helena,MT and Rick K0KEX in Smithville,MO. It’s a long haul in the Summer, especially from Missouri, and a sign that condx are beginning to improve.
