DST has given 80m band condx a significant boost. Steve W7WSV is an ORCA bellwether station. We connect Steve much more reliably late Fall & Winter. Our  Wyoming, Kansas, & Missouri colleagues are also enjoying better condx. The current Solar Cycle isn’t the best, but we’re coping well with the condx we have. We may not enjoy poor condx, but we’ve become better digital Operators from weekly practice, in all condx.

Thanks to Bruno KG7VVN in Beryl,UT for conducting tonight’s NBEMS Exercise. Bruno & Don KJ7VGV have alternated conducting NBEMS Exercise the 1st Tuesday every month since January. No need to continue pitching this project; 26/Dec/23 will be our last training session.

ORCA DIGITAL NET Welcomes Mike K7UBM in Prescott,AZ. We’ll ask Mike to review our Quick-Start Guide, FAQs, and the website in general: http://orcadigitalnet.com/quick-start/.  All incoming stations should read Quick-Start 2x. Our weekly NBEMS Exercise has more tasks than other nets; it’s best learned silently when ck’ed in QNX or Lurking. We’ll fill the Exercise file or take FLAMP Reports in the after-net Monitor’s Session.

Don AB1PH’s 20/30/40m Transcontinental Propagation Test Net has run 4 test nets & tried 3 bands and two time slots, but only one mode. I don’t see a Nationwide THOR-11 training net garnering much support from Ops currently practicing NBEMS traffic-handling at 4x mode speed. THOR-11 = 40wpm. MFSK-32 = 120wpm.  Test net in THOR-11 checked in 43 stations in 1hr/31min. Last night ORCA logged the 1st 20 stations in 14min w/MFSK-32, acknowledging each station individually. So far, this difference only resonates with Western digital Ops.  Test net NCS doesn’t ack every station, but ack’s by group, saving a little time.

Jaye KE6SLS advises remaining hopeful; others have similar counsel. Maybe when Propagation testing runs it’s course, they’ll try other modes. Immediately following Test net#1 I sent CQ 4 Eastern stations copying me in MFSK-32. Don AB1PH replied. He was 100% here; he had some errors but understood what I sent. Don in Maine @ 200w, me in Oregon @ 35w. He later termed the test unsuccessful. My conclusion was otherwise. He may have copied me 100% @ 50w, but we were quickly back to THOR-11. Some Ops like slow modes because they don’t type fast. Another plus for THOR-11 is it’s tolerance for mis-tuning, two factors that don’t concern seasoned Ops. None of us type 120wpm, but working at that speed makes the net much faster and more efficient. We’re training and practicing for extreme condx and serious emergencies. Time may be crucial. Better we practice hard and work relaxed when circumstances are time-critical. I do see THOR-11 as training-net mode for entry-level HF NBEMS traffic-handling. Then, on to a faster training net that prepares you for time-sensitive traffic in tough condx.

Next session, 14/Nov/23, we’ll ask two Ops to send ORCAtest image just prior to Comment Round. Please email these two images instead of the usual beginning/end ORCAtest image. We’ll explore some of the pathways between net members.

In two weeks, 21/Nov/23, we’ll add Macro Tags to our Comment file. Replace all instances of your CALLSIGN with <MYCALL>. The 1st sentence of you comments is a demonstration sentence. Compose this sentence as you like using these Tags: <MYNAME>,<ANTENNA>,<VERSION>.  You’re welcome to add other Tags to that sentence. Separate that 1st sentence from your comments with a single blank line. These Tags depend on variables stored in station configuration and adding Tags to a text file only works when the file is called by <FILE>. Test this experiment w/radio off.

Tonight’s NBEMS Exercise simulates receiving a plaintext field-report and forwarding it in FLMSG form ICS-213. This is the 1st Tuesday of
November; Bruno KG7VVN is NBEMS Exercise NCS.

Later this month we’ll experiment with adding Macro Tags to our Comment file. If you haven’t configured a Comment Macro, please add it to
your Macro set. Comment Macro and and other useful networking Macros are available here: http://orcadigitalnet.com/macros/ Help
w/Comment Macro, email: ncs@orcadigitalnet.com

Don AB1PH’s 20/30/40m Test Nets have greatly increased contact between Eastern and Western digital Ops. So far, it appears we conduct net
business faster & more efficiently out West. THOR-11 is their preferred net-mode. Hopefully, they’ll take a look @ our net routines and tactics.
A 40m Propagation Test Net is scheduled Today @ 1800p, 7.108+1500, THOR-11. We were busy preparing for ORCA. If you participated in
the 40m net, we’d like to hear your thoughts in the Comment Round.

The NBEMS Exercise is next w/Bruno KG7VVN

Cold weather here cloudy with rain past couple of days. Finally later today winds abated.
Heading out to cabin tomorrow to chop more wood. Hopefully this will be the last of it.
Hauled a bunch of manure last week and will do another trailer load tomorrow for the cabin.

As far as the 40 meter test I was in Reno which this antenna is not as good as at the cabin.
I copied:
wa0qhj NB
kf1d MA
n3ojp PA
wd5byq TX
k0kex MO
kj7ztf AZ
kj7rox AZ
wa7jyk OR
w7owo OR

I listened into zoom and could tell I only missed maybe 3-5 other stations.
Not a very good turn out for 40 meter test and many of the east stations didn’t
copy stations that I copied. If I was at the cabin I might have copied more
stations. Thor 11 however still sucks.

Had an excellent solar power day today. We’ve had a perfect welcome
to winter with several days of rain, then a pair of sunny days to
take up the slack. For this op, doing several transcontinental nets
on top of my usual activity really put the load on my battery system.
The sunshine is most welcome!

Humboldt is back to receiving inches of rain instead of fractions of
an inch.

My interest in various digital communications has lead me to the Freedv
digital voice project. Much work has gone into the project over the
last year. I was thrilled to make my first 20m HF contacts with FM
quality voice. I plan to schedule a few test sessions here in
northern CA on 75m. Let me know if you would be interested once we
set the dates!

So far, band sounds amazing.

Don AB1PH approached me regarding a 40m NCS, however, I declined, but
will keep an eye on nbems group for ops that are ready for training.

Tom, WA7JYK A few things can cause this. Using RIT or XIT on your
radio, using split on your radio. Locking FLDigi off freq then clicking
on NCS where receive is perfect and tx is off freq.

Gremlins were in full force for this op on Monday’s Emergency Digital
Net, as well as my digital VHF net! This op tuned up and missed re-
turning to 3581 by ONE KHz! Most ops were able to lock on my and did
copy TFC (good on you!) and a few needed my fill. My pi decided to
hickup and couldn’t recover. After three reboots, it finally came
back to life. It had been well over 6 months since it’s last boot and
I often run it at 100% of its CPU capacity!

It’s obvious that I was multitasking tonight. I was engaged with our
ARC club meeting via zoom while doing ORCA ex. I did a perfect job
of NOT PARSING the exercise instructions!

Stay well, practice often, and make sure to have some fun doing it!

I have Tom WA7JYK’s exercise 100% if anyone wants fills.

Seems I have had a lot of reason to be thinking about the Lock function in FLDigi lately. Of course locking onto a Tune signal only works until
one executes a macro with a different ‘GOFREQ:’ in the string (the official ORCA CK-N and COMMENTS macros for example both have
‘GOFREQ:1500’ included), changes to a mode where a differing Sweet Spot has been pre-configured, and so on. This reminder, also, that the
ORCA Preamble instructs us to “LOCK: Cursor @ 1500” (a very excellent idea here IMO).

A few recent experiences out in the digiverse have me seeing the use of those tags and spots in a new light; more as temporary crutches or
training wheels rather than permanent aids. My thinking now is to toss those crutches, pull off those training wheels and start free styling
some of those jumps out there. For now I have #-ed the ‘GOFREQs’ and unchecked the “Always start new modems at these frequencies” box
under Misc/Sweet Spot. Don’t worry, though. I am still wearing my helmet! : )

Enjoyed the net tonight. THANKS!

Had a bit of a slow start w/exercise NCS duties as I lost track of where my macros were :-) Even hit the wrong one and had to cancel that!

ORCA DIGITAL NET Welcomes Mike K7UBM in Prescott,AZ. I moved to Oregon from Jerome,AZ, just over Mingus Mt from Prescott.

Thanks to Bruno KG7VVN for an excellent NBEMS Exercise. Regular ORCA Ops make these Exercises look easy.

Tom WA7JYK’s 1st traffic transmission was doubled by an FLMSG transmission. We send Exercise files in FLAMP for Traffic Round.

NBEMS Exercise: 2nd sentence in 1st paragraph, ‘This is the 1st Tuesday of November; Bruno KG7VVN is NBEMS Exercise NCS.’

Good on Matt N6FPV for mastering EZNEC antenna simulator. Very handy for antenna experiments. I’ve not accomplished it yet myself. The
basic elements confuse me.

I expect the Transcontinental digital experiment will have trouble retaining participants. Western stations aren’t used to working @ 40wpm &
our Eastern colleagues prefer running nets in THOR-11.

Lamar… ORCA Go Home Macro is good 4 quick editing. These test nets are good reason, they’re mostly off the advertised frequency.

Tnx Mindy. To Lamar’s issue. Setting lock at 1500 will keep your TX on 1500. It
will not affect your RX .. that enables you to copy other stations not at 1500, but
when you TX it will be at 1500 lock. Also, I’d love to work with you to dial in
