After working 75m Phone nets, I feel a bit guilty complaining about band condx. Digital is certainly the mode for Solar Minimum. Tonight’s FLAMP Exercise used all MFSK modes. Keith WA0TJT and Doug W7DBE did not reply; the others all CONFIRMED the message. The band probably dropped Keith; I can’t guess what happened to Doug. Other Ops in his vicinity were solid.

Hats off to Greg KG7D for Elmering Diana KJ7GVY and Dave AG7TX in Carson City,NV. Tonight, Diana worked ORCA for the first time w/o a bobble. Elmering is one of Amateur Radio’s finest tradition. No new stations tonight. Whew! 28 ck-ins makes a busy net. There were two stations on in New Mexico tonight; we’ve not worked any NM stations until late last year. For seven years, we’ve not worked one station in MT or WY. Somehow, Cedar City,UT has attracted an inordinate number of digital Operators, leaving none for MT and WY.

Now to the big news. Steve K6ETA’s proposal to stand-up a digital Traffic net certainly struck a harmonious chord. Net response was positive and enthusiastic. Steve plans to run a Roundtable on Thursdays, 3.581, 1930p/0330z, to determine net focus. He plans to start the new net in Februrary. We’re really excited about this project and look forward to working the net as members. Don’t forget to ck-in with Steve on Thursdays and help with the formative stage. Your input will help him determine net focus.

As you can see, checking in with an * behind your call (K7KY*) is a work in progress. I messed it up tonight. Our intent is to enable long-time ORCA Ops to skip the FLAMP Exercise. Somewhere I lost the master plan. I’m back on track; the FLAMP Exercise and the Traffic Round are two parts of one event. We’ve enabled a few veterans to ck-in with an * behind their callsign. They will skip the FLAMP Exercise AND the Traffic Round. We’ll call them as usual for Comments.

The * ck-in option is intended for long-time ORCA Ops. They’re helping manage net-time by leaving room for newer Ops and keeping net-length in check. We prefer that most stations continue working the whole net. Deep familiarity with all the NBEMS procedures and tools will make you more comfortable and effective when circumstances are intense. Contact NCS before using the * option.

Tonight, a couple stations changed net-mode to Contestia and Olivia during Ck-In; one w/o TxID. Net-mode is determined by NCS. When you can’t work NCS in net-mode, you can’t work the net. You might still check ‘in&out’ when the call for check-in is relayed. During the Traffic Round, you’re welcome to use any mode you think everyone will copy; don’t forget TxID or you’ll be alone in the void.

Remember Steve’s Roundtable on Thursday evenings, 3.581, 1930p/0330z, MFSK-32, and help form the new Traffic Net.

Thanks for working with us tonight and over the past 7yrs. Your participation and support is the essence of ORCA DIGITAL NET. We look forward to working with you in 2020 and we’re delighted with the prospect of a companion Traffic Net. 73 Doug K7KY

ANNOUNCEMENTS 07/Jan/2020

Happy New Year! We wish you robust health, peace, prosperity, and better
band condx in 2020.

And, Happy Seventh Anniversary to ORCA DIGITAL NET! Thanks so much for
your participation and support over the years. Together, we’ve built an effective
digital training net and enjoyed ourselves in the process. We’ve become a
network of friends and colleagues while preparing to support our communities
in times of need.

Tonight’s FLAMP exercise distributes the file, ‘ex151.txt’, an FLDIGI/FLAMP/
PC-EDITOR exercise. If you complete the OPTIONAL exercise within, send that
file to NCS in the Traffic round with FLAMP.

When you see an asterisk after a CALLSIGN*, NCS has enabled those stations
to skip REPORTing in the FLAMP Exercise; they’re Active, and still called for
Traffic and Comments as usual. We’re saving some time in the FLAMP Exercise
by skipping REPORTS from veteran Ops that usually complete the file.

Here’s a bit of NEWS I’m delighted to announce on our 7th Anniversary. Steve
K6ETA proposes standing up an actual Traffic Net version of ORCA. Here’s Steve:

Hi everyone, Steve K6ETA here. I would like to start a new net based on our
experiences with ORCA and a desire to move beyond just weekly training. I would
like to give veteran ORCA and other experienced NBEMS ops something to graduate
to and a chance to contribute with their new skills. Hopefully with a real service
to amateur radio in general. Before I start to build it, I just wanted to know
the general interest level in something like this. Please comment on which of
the following missions is your favorite:

Scheduled message handling for marine mobiles, mobiles, portables, QRPs (home stations relay)

A pure DX Net (series of relay calls for ck-ins, signal reports are the main traffic)

Space Weather, Regional WX, Fire and Earthquake reports + Emergency & H&W traffic

A digital companion to Satern, Skywarn, Maritime Mobile Service Net, etc.

A West-of-the-Rockies NBEMS Net with general check-ins and brief traffic

Tonight’s Optional Exercise within the FLAMP Exercise will ask what type of digital
Traffic net most interests you. You can expand on your choice in the Comment Round.

With so many ORCA Ops engaged in positions of local EMCOMM leadership, a Traffic
net could usefully process messages from agencies like ARRL, ARES, RACES, ACS, ETC,
creating a nexus for their reports and bulletins. A core benefit will be hands-on experience
in an actual Traffic net. Eventually, Steve may need alternate NCS, enabling hands-on
NCS experience too; it’s a timely development for Amateur digital networking. ORCA
DIGITAL NET will continue as usual. The new net will meet on Thurs, 3.581, 1930p/0330z.

Steve K6ETA’s news is very exciting. I can’t pick any one mission because a number of them jump out at me (traffic nets, solar wx, emcomm). I look forward to seeing

what Steve comes up with. 3.581 is becoming an active spot for NBEMS.

Hope everyone enjoyed the holidays. We enjoyed our 2 week NCS vacation Great to see all of you on the WF tonight. Kudos to Diana KJ7GVY who worked ORCA as an ACTIVE Op

for the 1st time

le net missions. We will be continuing the ORCA conventions regardless of the typ of traffic net we land on — and we
hope competent ops will bring the skills they learned here on ORCA to offer even more to the amateur radio

The new new will probably officially launch in February, but we will start showing up on freq in informal fashion until
then. 73 for now < K6ETA
