Mindy & I really enjoyed the net tonight. Of course, we would say that most net nights. We actually had an unusual amount of QRN here, but it didn’t hamper digital comms. FLAMP traffic required few fills. Traffic round was interesting tonight. At check-in I had Bob W7GBB as QRU, so I passed him and called Ken KR7KR. But, Bob did have traffic and they doubled. Oddly enough, Mindy W7ZAP copied Bob’s FLMSG perfectly and I copied Ken’s image fairly well. That’s not happened here before. I attribute it to the orientation of our antennas.

Welcome back to Bob KA6ULG in Eureka,CA. Have you noticed the gradual change to our membership? Five UT stations tonight, one in ID, and one in WA. All seasoned digital Ops too. With the band so often long, it’s great to have strong distant stations for relays. Thanks to Brad WA7HHE for relaying a check-in call. I’ve been wanting to do this, but didn’t give it much thought beforehand. I’ll make a macro for ORCA check-in relays that you can add to your macro file if you like.

Near net-end, Clifford N0LKC checked in from a campground in NM with 10w. If you have any interest in the quality of our air and water, you should check-out Clifford’s Carnicom Institute website: carnicominstitute.org/wp/; excellent scientific research into geoengineering and bioengineering. In a group of Amateurs you will find much more than a bunch of radio Ops. Here at ORCA we have scientists, engineers, policemen, craftsmen, and more.

This simple macro will make it easier for you to relay weak stations:
———
<TX>
QST < <MYCALL> relaying for ORCA DIGITAL NET
calling stations not hearing NCS < <MYCALL>
<RX>
——–
Copy and Paste it into your macro file and name it something like: ‘ORCA Relay’. Let me know if you have it working so I can occasionally ask you to look for weak stations.

Here’s Ken’s image I copied during the double while Mindy copied Bob’s FLMSG traffic.

Thanks for practicing with us tonight. Send comments and suggestions to: ncs@orcadigitalnet.com. Cu next week. 73 Doug K7KY

ORCA Announcements 06/dec/16

Today we conclude the file manipulation exercise cancelled last net.

You will receive ‘ex5.txt’ in the weekly FLAMP exercise again this

week. Follow the instructions to create an ICS-213 format file

and complete the two statements. During Traffic round, send the

resulting message to NCS in FLAMP. Remember to change the

‘Send to’ window from QST to ORCA or NCS.

Find FLAMP files quickly from ‘File/Folders’ on the upper menu bar.

OR: Select ‘Open message folder’ on menu, ‘CONFIG/Misc/NBEMS to

open the message folder automatically on RX.

If you can complete the exercise immediately, this is today’s Traffic.

Send it to NCS in FLAMP. Sending it next week is OK too. As always,

these exercises are optional; you can send other traffic, images, QRU.

Band condx last week highlighted the value of relays. We will be

making more use of relays this winter. A number of ORCA Ops have a

great combination of location and equipment that make them excellent

relay stations.

ALL ORCA Next is the weekly FLAMP practice drill.. Mindy W7ZAP will send the same file as the last two weeks. We’ve not yhyet completed the exercise… this exercise is optional as always.. you can send your own traffic, images. or just send QRU… OK over to Mindy fo rthe exercise… < K7KY

Troubleshooting Fldigi & Flrig on Raspberry Pi2 and FT897D

Hardware Problem:

My USB expansion device must have some loose slots causing intermittant

operation. I moved the CAT cable and USB sound interface device to more

secure slots.

Fldigi Configuration to get both programs running together:

1. Setup of client and server is exactly the opposite of instructions given

for Flrig and Fldigi. Under Fldigi configuration, check box Enable flrig

xcvr control with fldigi as client; documentation says that Flrig is the client.

The IP address is for local host 127.0.0.1 port 12345.

3. check box Flrig PTT keys modem.

4. Uncheck and don’t use RigCAT, Hamlib, or XML-RPC. Hardware PTT is ok. h/w

ptt device-pin selections:

check box Use separate serial port PTT

Device: /dev/ttyUSB0

Use RTS, RTS +V

Initialize.

Flrig Configuration Setup

1. Primary Rig: FT897D

CAT Ser.Port: /dev/serial/by-id/usb-FTDI_FT232R_USB_UART_A105HUBV-if00-port0

Baud: 4800

Radio Button Checked: PTT via CAT

check boses RTS +12, DTR +12

2. XML, leave Use fldigi server unchecked, Fldigi adr 127.0.0.1, port 12345.

3. PTT: PTT Port /dev/ttyAMA0

radio button PTT via RTS, RTS +12V

Initialize.

4. Aux, None

5. Poll Meters and Oper Controls set to 1.

6. Cmds: Connected to transceiver should show activated in green.

Check out Flrig

At this point I can check out Flrig by:

Moving from VF0 A to VFO B and back and see the freq, chance on the radio

display. PTT should work from Flrig, as well as changing the mode.

Checkout of Fldigi

At this point I can PTT with tune or T/R mouse selection. I can move the radio

VFO frequency and see the frequency chaange on Flrig, and Fldigi. Furthermore,

I can open the list make a selection and bring up preset frequency and mode.

Note: Where to find files:

FLMSG: /home/pi/.nbems/ICS/messages/..

FLAMP: /home/pi/.nbems/FLAMP/

This station is expected to be off the air for the next month.
