Welcome to Bill VE7WSM checking in from Alberni Valley Regional Airport,BC. Band condx were better than usual tonight. Many of the close-to-NCS stations didn’t ck-in, but I think some could have. Craig KD7CL had a good signal from Bandon,OR, about 40mi north. The Eureka,CA stations had ARC meeting tonight. Doug KA7FOO will be away another nine weeks or so teaching NBEMS classes in Reno,NV.

The weekly FLAMP exercise is a good barometer of net operations. It’s fairly complex and runs briskly. It exercises the fundamental FLAMP features used for efficient traffic handling. Sometimes it goes like clockwork; other times it glitches here and there. Not to worry. It takes a few sessions to get the routine. The exercise goes quickly, much as messages would flow on a Traffic or Emergency net.

We’re doing well with pre-tone. There is very little doubling these days. Our current band condx make doubles difficult to avoid when stations cannot hear each other. Even with a wonky band, pre-tone may help avoid doubles. The narrow, but strong tune carrier may be visible, even when content is too weak to decode. Using pre-tone is most useful for digital net Check-In and Re-Check when numerous stations want to contact NCS.

We’ll give the 160m Roundtable another go this Thursday @ 0300z/1900p, 1.837mhz. I’ll start ck-in a bit early. Consider the NCS role for the roundtable. Or maybe a rotating NCS each week/month like the ARES District 5 weekly meeting where NCS rotates thru the 5 County ECs. NCS is simple for a roundtable; take Check-Ins and call stations in order for the roundtable. NCS is important when not all stations copy each other. You occasionally need to summarize a weak stations comments for the net. It can also be done w/o NCS as a meeting freq/time (watering hole).

We’ve added a page to the website, SK SALE. It’s a page for Paul KE6NVU, an ORCA founder. Paul passed away in November. His wife will be selling his station; an extensive station that will take some time to inventory and list. Keep an eye on it; you may find something you need. We’ve just begun and it will take awhile.

ANNOUNCEMENTS  06 February 2018

Tonight’s Optional FLAMP exercise distributes ‘ex55.txt’, an FLMSG
/FLAMP exercise using an FLMSG BLANK form. Complete the instructions
and send the new file to NCS during TRAFFIC round using FLAMP, or send
your own practice traffic in any mode or QRU.

Twelve ORCA Ops showed up on 160m last Thursday evening.  It didn’t go as
anticipated, but it was challenging and instructive. I initially thought
the QRM was intentional, but Jaye KE6SLS attempted to contact the Op in
CW, but no reply.  It was a long keydown with ID at the end, like a
beacon. A powerful beacon.  Anyway, I moved up to 2000wf, but few could
copy my QSY.  Anyway, we’ll try again next Thursday @ 0300z, 1.837 unless
we decide another freq tonight.

I’m unable to do an ongoing Thursday Roundtable NCS.  If you’d like to do
Thursday NCS, let me know.  W/o NCS we can still have a Top Band meeting
freq/time.  It would facilitate QSOs, testing, and troubleshooting. Hosting
a roundtable should be easy.  NCS would make it easier as there will be
some stations that don’t copy others, making handoff in rotation difficult.

PRE-TONE:
Remember to use a brief PRE-TONE b4 TX when doubles are likely. No
PRE-TONE is needed while working NCS; only you and NCS are engaged.
If NCS asks, ‘Can anyone relay that weak station?’, send a PRE-TONE
b4 responding; others may also respond. Our diligent use of pre-tone
is a big factor in reducing doubles during nets and improving net
discipline. Pre-toning when doubles are likely is an unmistakable
mark of an experienced digital Operator.

MFSK IMAGE Tip: ‘Hold the mouse over either the XmtClr or the XmtGry
button and the tooltip will tell you the transmit time for this image.’.
