* Active Stations called for COMMENTS only

80m was predicted to be quiet. We usually interpret that to mean propagation will be poor. Tonight, quiet didn’t mean a quiet band; it was noisy, but initial propagation wasn’t bad. We connected most stations easily at ck-in. By the Comment Round, condx were a bit worse and some stations weren’t printing perfectly. Still, the net went briskly and we took REPORTS and CONFIRMED files for two stations in the after-net Monitor’s session. Mark KA7ULD in Helena,MT tried to ck-in, but he wasn’t heard. If you hear a station we don’t acknowledge, please relay them in. Although they’re not likely to participate, we’d like to log them. Next week, the band may accommodate them.

Tonight we Welcomed three new stations, Dave KF7ZIY in Vancouver,WA, John KL7RI in Reno,NV, and Andy K3CAQ in Thousand Oaks,CA. We’ve welcomed quite a few new Ops lately; maybe the spring air. Maybe the state of the world. In any case, we’re happy to welcome these stations aboard. While training and practicing to support EMCOMM, we’re also establishing a solid network of experienced digital Operators. Our nets also serve the Amateur Radio community.

Seven stations participated in the FLAMP Exercise tonight. Two modes were extravagant for band condx. PSK-500R and -250R were really optimistic. Neither mode did well, but one station, John KS6M in Oakland,CA CONFIRMED the file with one pass of PSK-500R @ 440wpm. Brad WA7HHE decoded the Preamble and a couple blocks. Everyone else missed it entirely, or REPORTED missing the Preamble which usually means missing much more. PSK-250R added a couple blocks, but no one CONFIRMED. The last pass in MFSK-32 CONFIRMED all six remaining stations. Even in adverse condx, a fast narrow mode works on a good path.

A reminder to all: The weekly FLAMP Exercise is limited to eight stations. This keeps our nets from running too long. Time is limited and we have stations in three time zones. If you want to work the FLAMP Exercise, it’s best to ck-in early. When we fill eight slots, we assign an astrik (*) to Active stations at ck-in, ie: K6ETA*. The * stations are NOT called for the FLAMP Exercise or Traffic Round, but participate in Comments as usual.

If you’ve been working ORCA for a few months or longer, you can ignore our comments to incoming Ops. You’re doing a great job. The example you’re setting is the model incoming Ops will emulate. It’s sometimes still astonishing how quickly some Ops complete the Advanced FLAMP Exercise. Some are so fast it seems they’re waiting for us to call; we’re slowing them down (-:

From our perspective at NCS, it’s easy to see the results of regular practice. Some of our ORCA colleagues have been working the net for nearly 8yrs. Wow! If they need that much practice, they might be defective. Hardly! It’s regular and consistent practice that deeply embeds skills to muscle and memory. Practice is what enables us to perform complex tasks with precision when conditions are unstable or threatening. Practice tunes and hones our skills and keeps them sharp. The result of regular practice is clearly evident in the FLAMP Exercise. There’s a lot to do in a brief time. It requires processing a task with two or three software apps, maintaining your place in Rotation, and managing your radio station. Hats off to those who make it look like a walk-in-the-park.

We encourage new ORCA Ops to work the FLAMP Exercise and the Advanced Exercise as QNX ck-ins. Working silently at home w/o interacting w/NCS, you can take your time while learning the exercise. Key to the Exercise is tracking your position on the Roster, prepared to REPORT when NCS calls. We’re practicing to process traffic on an Emergency or Traffic net. The Exercise tasks simulate the many facets of digital traffic-handling. When you can work the FLAMP Exercise w/o issue, you’ll be very well prepared to work a busy Emergency net.

We suggest you prepare yourself for the Exercise and log in Active when you feel comfortable. You’ll know when your ready. Ready doesn’t mean you won’t make a mistake. It means you’ve done your best to prepare; mistakes happen while we learn. We try to avoid the avoidable mistakes. Welcome to a friendly and supportive digital training net.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Tonight’s FLAMP Exercise distributes the file, ‘ex214.txt’, an FLDIGI/FLMSG/FLAMP Exercise.
If you complete the ADVANCED Exercise within, send that file to NCS in the Traffic Round
in FLAMP.

Have you considered running your NBEMS apps from a Thumbdrive? Doug K7KY’s digital station has
run from a thumbdrive for more than a year w/o issue. Copying the thumbdrive makes a quick and
easy BU. Installing NBEMS apps on a Windows Thumbdrive is simple. The FLDIGI Manual used to say
this was for Windows, but now it doesn’t mention PC type. It may work for Linux and MAC, we
don’t know. If you find that it does, we’d like to know too. See FLDIGI Manual 4.1.15, Ch2.

The most frequent FLAMP Exercise error usually involves a newer ORCA Op copying the primary file
100% and immediately starting to work the ADVANCED Exercise without CONFIRMING 100% copy
when NCS calls for REPORTS. When stations ignore REPORT calls, but later send the ADVANCED file
for Traffic, it’s obvious why they didn’t reply when called to REPORT. They began working the
Advanced exercise before completing the primary. Reading and understanding the Exercise
instructions is crucial to working the Exercise correctly. See the ‘New Ops’ tab at:

QUICK-START

When you’re parsing and implementing written instructions consistently in Training sessions,
you’ll be capable and confident on a busy Emergency Net.

Thanks for emailing the ORIGINAL Signal Evaluation images to: ncs@orcadigitalnet.com

:mg:954 Here is a question for all of us, if you were to have a major storm or disaster in your area, who in your family do you
think would benefit the most from a message fromeso:8 tt to§Qnat@9Ovq³ So in light of that thought, this medium is an
excellent way to contact your loved ones and friends. I worked most of my life in the electronics area and the past 20 years in
the Telecommunications industry. I wasnt awarejf this fact unti#T e¹elAeong first hand how communications suffer in a disaster
or severe incident like an earthquake. Did you know that for any area of the world and even in these United States9epaRrtserqMxywt
t s o handle (at any one time) 40% of the people in the effected area. So with this fact we can only make calls about 40 percent at
any one time.

So call ur friends and family from the effecteÊiqP works better that way. Or even braeC´ee digital to contact them. Thanks de

NCS < WB7EUX – Spring and Winter are having there usual battle for dominance in the Wallowa Mtns: one day it’s snowing and the next it’s warm with clear skies.

Forecast indicates this will go on for the next week or so. I completed two pasture projects for pasture irrigation this past week. All the machines are serviced and

ready for another season of mowing. Looking forward to flowers, green leaves, and warmer temps! Thanks for the net Doug and Mindy, I really enjoy the exercises. 73 de

[WRAP:beg][WRAP:crlf][WRAP:fn 20210406.txt]Strange things happening here at the hospital. I know of only ONE Covid patient currently in ICU. Three weeks ago we were at

30 percent Covid patients. I discovered that ER is not testing ANYONE for Covid UNLESS they have severe symptoms, such as pneumonia. Previously, they were testing

EVERYONE that came into the hospital. The same applies to ICU and MED-SURG. If one does not test, then it makes it look like Covid cases are going down. The Covid
ward has been closed now for three weeks, and I have not been required to put on Covid protective equipment for ANYONE except that one patient in ICU.

Very windy here this evening, gusting over 45 mph — real challenge to get the 134 foot doublet launched. At least the wind is warmer.

Found a nice spot to camp about 20 miles east of Gallup in the Cibola National Forest === 80 to 100 foot tall Ponderosa pine forest. Hope to be on the air from up

there the weekend of the 17th. Will experiment with JS8 -CALL.

I DE-winterized the camper and now have hot running water — Ohhh the Joy!

Best wises to all at ORCA. [WRAP:chksum 26E0][WRAP:end] — end —

Three new stations tonite. ORCA DIGITAL NET Welcomes Dave KF7ZIY in Vancouver,WA, John KL7RI in Reno,NV, and Andy K3CAQ Thousand Oaks,CA. We’ll ask them to Monitor a

few sessions to understand the net and FLAMP Exercise b4 ck-ing in Active.

80m is odd tonite. John KS6M CONFIRMED the FLAMP Exercise on the first pass in the least likely mode, but later in the net, I couldn’t copy John at all. That’s HF

I wonder why Bruce’s Hospital decided to stop testing for COVID19?

K6ETA < W7ZAP That u Steve? < W7ZAP

ORCA < K6ETA SRI my IC-7300 was in USB and should’ve been in USB-D mode, so only my hot mic was picking up my monitor from the speaker… oof!

Here’s what I was trying to send:

It looks like KO0OOO, the Winlink RMS in Las Vegas, is parked 1.5 KHz above us. That is it’s CENTER freq and it runs both ARDOP and VARA 2000, so the wider modes will

certainly QRM us when stations are sending messages through that portal. When we are at 1500 WF our center frequency is actually 3582.5, and our wider signals

definitely overlap that RMS.

That freq has had ARDOP and VARA traffic the whole net.

I believe this RMS is outside of the accepted band plan for Winlink stations on 80M… perhaps we should politely contact KO0OOO?

There are several nets that encourage Winlink check-ins on Tuesday evenings, so I doubt this problem will go away unless the RMS stations all stay within the plan… I

operate an RMS up at 3592, where I belong, so don’t look at me! =)

Just got my second Pfizer shot earlier today and no side effects other than a general sleepiness so far.

Hope everyone is doing well and another great net! Sorry for the glitch!
