DST did effect the net tonight, but not as much as we anticipated.  The FLAMP Exercise usually reveals band conditions. The band was working long, but short was marginal. It sometimes faded deeply and then recovered. We’re not having near the difficulties experienced by Phone nets. These conditions create lots of opportunities for relay practice.

We had more doubles than usual tonight. During the Traffic round, John KS6M was doubled by a strong station that began in the middle of John’s traffic and switched us to 8PSK-125. John had to send his traffic again.  A brief in-attention at one station results in down-time for every station. ORCA is complex and brisk; we all need to stay focused on net flow. That said, our nets usually run very efficiently.  Stuff happens. Mindy & I make mistakes almost every net. It’s remarkable how smoothly ORCA usually runs. Even digital veterans occasionally make mistakes. Your focus and attention is a prime component in net operations.

We’re looking ahead and thinking how to make learning digital NCS duties easy and interesting. Mindy is working on a How-To for the FLDIGI Logger.  It’s a big help in compiling a detailed roster. If you don’t currently use the Logger, take time to check-it-out. We’ll make our ORCA Log file (ORCA_logbook.adif) available for download. Add our file to   ‘…/fldigi.files/logs/. Now, you can work along with us as we take check-ins. Soon, you’ll be proficient at creating a roster, . Should it fall to you to be NCS, you will have every Op known to ORCA at your fingertips.

Thanks for practicing with us. We look forward to working with you again next Tuesday evening.  73 Doug K7KY

ANNOUNCEMENTS 05/Nov/2019

Tonight’s FLAMP exercise distributes the file, ‘ex144.txt’, an FLDIGI/FLMSG/FLAMP
exercise. If you complete the OPTIONAL exercise within, send that file to NCS in
the Traffic round with FLAMP.

We’re updating the website. Please help us proof-read; watch for typos and check
us for content accuracy and intuitive presentation. Pay particular attention to the
Quick-Start section. It should clearly explain net objectives and operations. We plan
to change the MACROS section name to NCS TOOLS. It will then include the Macros
page and a new page for FLDIGI Logger operations; other NCS tools/tactics will follow.

The special session ORCA nets we ran for CA/FIRE Support highlighted the need for
alternate Net Control Stations. The CA/FIRE Support operation was brief and limited
in scope. For extended operations, we will need more NCS. Most of you are well qualified
for this role. Fred KI7TPD is our first volunteer. TU, Fred. Spontaneous Support nets will
be easier to run than our weekly training sessions. Check ins will be mostly ORCA Ops
who know our routines intimately. They will make the NCS task much easier.

Mindy W7ZAP is currently developing a How-To guide for the FLDIGI Logger. The Logger
makes digital net check-in much easier and helps build a detailed net roster. With the
How-To guide, we’ll include our ORCA log file with every station known to ORCA.

And, we’re in discussion with Ops interested in developing an HF digital training net
based on ORCA. We’ve always hoped this would happen. We’d like to create a main-page
section for ORCA Affiliates. Nets of any name, but using the ORCA format. This would
enable others to develop digital training nets w/o having to build format from scratch.
The ORCA website would define and explain the Affiliate nets perfectly, saving the need
to create another website. The website is a powerful guide and reference for working the
net. The ‘ORCA Affiliate’ section would have a page for each Affiliate with the difference
between the Affiliate and ORCA, like schedule, NCS info, deviations from the ORCA format,
etc. Affiliates will have access to our FLAMP Exercise archive.

Remember: When we have too many active station for the FLAMP Exercise, we’ll ask some
stations to sit-out the exercise, but participate in the Traffic and Comment rounds as
usual. An ‘*’ will precede their Callsign on the roster. We’ll try to choose stations
likely to CONFIRM the traffic w/o fills so they will still have practice traffic for
the Traffic Round.

The following is a report on the status of communications services in geographic areas impacted by the power shutoffsas of October 27, 2019at 11:30 a.m. EDT. This report incorporates network outage data submitted by communications providers to the Federal Communications Commission’s Disaster Information Reporting System (DIRS). DIRS is currently activated for32affected counties in California. Note that the operational status of communications services during the power shut offs may evolve rapidly, and this report represents a snapshot in time. The followingcounties are in the current geographic area that is part of DIRS.California: Alpine, Amador, Butte,Calaveras, Contra Costa, El Dorado, Glenn, Humboldt, Kern, Lake, Los Angeles, Marin, Napa, Nevada, Orange, Placer, Riverside, San Bernardino, San Diego, San Mateo, Santa Barbara, Santa Clara, Santa Cruz, Shasta, Sierra, Solano, Sonoma, Tehama, Tuolumne, Ventura, Yolo, and Yuba.

Depending on WX we may be turning a corner. The next few hours the wind is expected to give us one last kick in the teeth, then condx should turn favorable for the mop-up operation. Thanks to the THOUSANDS of fire units, the vast majority of threatened homes have been saved thus far.

The ORCA Net has been a solid and useful platform that we surely would have used had things gone worse. As it was, the nightly check ins showed that the ‘watering hole’ on this freq at this time is more than just useful – it’s proven.

Many thanks to Doug and Mindy who have worked through many of their own challenges to continue the Net.

The unprecedented evacuation was amazingly orderly. Authorities seem to have made the right call with enough time to do so without panic. There were many erratic drivers and stressed out people, but in all it seems to have been a large success.

At present the power is coming back on in Marin and parts of Sonoma Counties most people who were not evacuated have been without power since Saturday, so this is a good test of our resiliency.

Tonight was Pizza and ORCA Net night at my house.

Started out with AG7TX as operator, thought propagation was really rough tonight. Hence all three of us in&out Figured out we had a radio problem. Swithed out radios in time to confirm the FLamp excercise the first pass. All three of us are setup to recive, but only one transmitter. So I got to be active op tonight.

Obvioulsy didn’t have time to adjust the power. 20-30 over s-9 at 35 watts.
Could have turned it down a bit. Opps..

Thank you for another fun and interesting net.

In Las Vegas for a month, maybe two. Trying to get some training sessions established. Attended the Henderson Tech Tuesday breakfast, nice active group. WX here is nice, lows in lower 50s, highs in the upper 70s.

Doug, K7KY, you have a S9 signal in Las Vegas tonight. Seeing the stations with some distance good, but closer station not that strong.

Been a good trip so far, but have lead or been in the cold. Including the 35 degress in Las Vegas, and the teens at Spring Valley, Echo Canyon, and Cathedral Gorge State Parks. Plan on being in Arizona at the first of the year, remaining for 3 months.

Thanks Mindy for relaying the Kincade Fire Report from Steve. And thanks to Steve, K6ETA, for assembling such good reports.

Brad WA6HHE had this question for our CA stations experiencing the Wildland Fire Power outages, did all of the repeaters you work through have long term back up power?

In the entire region, namely Sonoma and Marin counties, ALL the major repeaters stayed up and active with only a few minor (and brief) lapses due to refueling generators, etc. The VHF system is very resilient. The only minor planning issue involved the wide Marin system being tied up for RACES emergency traffic (that largely never came) when there were health and welfare traffic that were told to stand by. Perhaps when primary Emcomm agencies are up and running, VHF repeaters could be used for health and wellfare…? A discussion to be had.
