We were surprised by the holiday check-ins. More than we anticipated, for sure. The net was unusual and brief. We skipped the weekly FLAMP exercise and the Traffic round. Comments were also short and we closed in 40min. Most of our regular Ops were here despite the holiday. Mindy & I enjoyed the early closing, but still didn’t see the fireworks. 4th of July fog is a Brookings tradition. The City Chiefs always light the fireworks anyway, fearing the tourists will be angry and not come back. Locals would rather wait for a clear evening.

We’re working on the format for a local VHF ORCA DIGITAL NET. Initially, we thought to run our current format on VHF, but realized we’ll be working with mostly entry level digital Ops. Only three have minimal experience with FLAMP. We need to trim down a bit for our local Ops.

Our plan is to offer the net for a conditional period of 3mos. Then, we’ll know if there’s sufficient interest to continue. We have three digitally active VHF Ops who will be good-to-go quickly, so we can accomplish one of our goals in that time.

Here’s how the test image printed in Eureka,CA, about 100mi south of NCS.

RX: KE6SLS CA RX: KB6NN CA

Thanks for checking in on the 4th of July. We’ll be back to our regular practice net next week and we hope you’ll be working with us then. 73 Doug K7KY

:mg:941 For Operation Pathfinder Triton 32 we anticipated 100+ digital messages. Local Amateurs were stationed at the Brookings EOC and the St.

Tim’s CCP (Casualty Collection Point), both FLDIGI stations. I was preparing to be the 2m digital Relay from my home station. All traffic would

use the ICS 213. All our traffic during the exercise began and ended with “THIS IS AN EXERCISE”.

FLMSG TEMPLATES

Much of form filling would be repetitive text . We expected contacts like these:

EOC > KJ7JOY (CCP)

EOC > W7ZAP (Relay)

KJ7JOY > EOC

I filled out a form for each pair, saved it as a Template, and named them intuitively, (KJ7JOY>EOC.213T). To load a template in FLMSG, select

Form > ICS > ICS213. Then select Template > Load and select desired template. In an emergency situation, it will be important to make

templates on the fly. Like macros, they certainly cut down on repetitive typing and allow for better organization and efficiency.

I have cats locked in house, my youngest is OKAY with the big bangs, but rouge cat, he is pretty darned timmid about this booming business.

He ended up staying in my lap almost the whole night last night. Buggers do not like the 4th of July!

I also watched a bit of news about VETS living in the 4th of July time, seems a lot of them do anything they can to avoid the noise. I feel for

them. BUT, I still love a popping good bang and all the lights!

I’ll post the final comments later om. I am running 50 watts, hoping i’m heard

rg. Okay, here’s the rest of my stuff…. I’ll jst

paste it in and keep it easy. I am ducking the explosions att!

ARS ke6sls running 50 watts tonight to the same low, short dipole.

I couldn’t take four days off in a row! I mowed, edged the lawn. Trimmed all the cracks, then vaccumed up the whole mess with my industrial

vac. Oh, took out the power washer and washed the work truck and my tool trailer (removed the Humboldt paint <moss/mildew>) Looks like

someone parked a whole new rig out there for me! Pulled up my sleves and put the ammonia down to stip wax from floors–gassed myself in

process, even with my resperator, but I managed to get years of crud off the floors and a new coat of wax to start the whole evil process over

again!

Still have a load of laundry to finish, but lunches, breakfasts, dinners are cooked and ready for another shorter week of slave labor!

I scanned the bands several times today, just didn’t hear ANYONE! I think the bands were open, could hear wwv on 20/15/10MHz just no ham

signals. I guess they are all out playing!

Good sunshine today. We’ve been under the marine layer for many days, so sun was actually quite welcome!

tïezsiÙzKE6SLS RR Jaye the noise hasn’t begun hr yet… we can usually see the fireworks from our upper pad at least when it’s not foggy

which is the norm for 4th in Brookings… they always shoot them anyway because the believe the tourists would be angry have a great time

listening to the boomers and we’ll see u nxt week… 73 Doug K7KY sk < K7KY
