When DST begins, we usually see an immediate improvement in band condx, but this year is a bit different. 80m is still funky at net time and has been dropping NVIS regularly. Thanks for your patience and persistence. Although HF condx have been difficult, they’re not nearly as tough for us as for Phone nets. Their Relay stations are Net-Heros this time of year. One-way path propagation seems to happen more frequently these days too.

ORCA DIGITAL NET Welcomes two new stations, Steve N7SDC in Rigby,ID and Shane KI7SFS in Spokane, WA. Welcome back to Jordan KC9PXM in Mountain Home AFB,ID.

Do you recall this exchange when NCS called for Late Ck-Ins after the Basic NBEMS Exercise?

‘AE6LJ Re-Check QNX pls

AE6LJ < W7ZAP Rgr tnx

ANy late ck-ins?? < W7ZAP’

Hats-Off to Lamar LE6LJ for leaving the net correctly and creating a ‘teaching moment’ for everyone. Notifying NCS that you’re leaving the net is basic Directed Net protocol. When NCS doesn’t know that a station has left, they waste net-time calling that station.

Changes to the NBEMS Exercise went well tonight. 10 stations checked-in Active to work the Basic Exercise. It went much faster w/o the Advanced Exercise and Traffic Round. We CONFIRMED 9 of the 10 participants and wrapped the net in 45min.

Three stations participated in the after-net Monitor’s Session. The Monitor’s Sessions is working well. It enables Monitoring stations that work the Exercises silently to Fill or CONFIRM their files. It enables us to wrap the main net earlier.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

January 2022 is ORCA’s 9th Anniversary! When we set out to develop a digital NBEMS training net in 2013, we didn’t have an end-date in mind. We eventually thought we’d time-out around 7yrs, but it didn’t happen. Here we are in 2022 and ORCA is still relevant and well supported. It’s time to prepare for this year’s training and practice.

We’re trying to reduce our ORCA time/energy commitment a little without sacrificing relevance or badgering our colleagues. We’re slightly changing the NBEMS Exercise by eliminating the Advanced NBEMS Exercise from some sessions. In effect, we’ll have two NBEMS Exercises, one Basic, the other Advanced. There are 4-5 Tuesdays every month. 4 Tues months will have 3 Basic NBEMS Exercise and one Advanced. The Advanced Exercise will always be the last Tues. The first three Tuesdays will be Basic Exercises. 5 Tues months will have 2 Advanced Exercises, the last two Tuesdays.

The Basic NBEMS Exercise will be a short text file. Topics are secondary to the Exercise. Our focus is traffic-handling practice, not file content. That said, we want to keep the topics relevant to ORCA Ops. Relevant radio, computer, and networking info, Health & Welfare, and digital traffic-handling Tips & Tactics, w/URL are suggested.

NCS will continue running Basic and Advanced NBEMS Exercises as we have. Without the Advanced Exercise, the Basic Exercises will be easy to work or conduct. They will take less time to complete and accommodate more participants. We’ll also build a ‘How to’ page for conducting the Basic Exercise. We hope to have a couple ORCA Ops help conduct net activities by running some of the Basic Exercises. Experience controlling the net is important for all Ops. We never know when greater responsibility for net operations will fall to us.

Some digital nets have only one NCS. Stuff happens; sometimes, there’s little or no notice that NCS isn’t coming. Western Digital Net was a good example in December. WDN needed members to step into the NCS role at short notice. No December WDN session went w/o a NCS. Three WDN members stepped in and called the net. Two of the three are experienced Net Control Operators, but the third, Brad WA7HHE is not. Although inexperienced, Brad was willing to risk a little uneasiness. He did very well; it wasn’t his first time either. Many others are as qualified as Brad to run parts of ORCA and we hope to demonstrate just how easy the Basic NBEMS Exercise is to conduct. We hope a couple Ops will see how easy this is and take responsibility for some Basic Exercises. We’ll outline it well and help you prepare to succeed and enjoy yourself.

ORCA DIGITAL NET Welcomes Jordan KC9PXM in Mountain Home,ID and Shane KI7SRS in Spokane,WA. We’ll ask them to ck-in QNX for a few sessions to learn net prtocols and conventions. Shane indicates this is his 3rd ORCA Ck-In, but he doesn’t appear in either of our ORCA logs.

The Basic NBEMS Exercise is easier and shorter w/o the Advanced Exercise. We easily worked 10 stations tonight. The band change so quickly that I didn’t print John KS6M for the 2nd Report, but Mindy did. Keep an eye on the Basic Exercise; it’s easy to conduct. You may want to give it a try (-:
