While the band is certainly not great, it’s not too tough for digital operations. Phone nets are still having difficulty, but digital operations are improving. Mindy W7ZAP Confirmed all six stations in the FLAMP Exercise on the first pass in THOR-50×1. If this keeps up, we’ll soon return to working with the fast/narrow modes we took for granted a few years ago.

ORCA Welcomes Tom WB7EUX in Joseph,OR. And, welcome back to Jason W7JSN in Union,OR. Counting Mindy and myself, we had five Oregon stations on tonight. It’s taken years to attract digital Ops in our home State. Maybe we’ll catch up with Utah! Speaking of Utah, I think UT Ops will be important to the new Western Digital Net. Cedar City is home to skilled digital Ops with solid signals. They will make excellent WDN Relay and NCS stations.

Mark your calendar for the first session of Western Digital Net, Steve K6ETA/NCS, this Thursday, 06/Feb/20, 1930p/0330z, 3.581, MFSK-32. Our support will help WDN hit the ground running.

Thanks for following the ORCA check-in protocol (Preamble). It makes check-in and building the roster easier for us. And, thanks for working with us again tonight. We appreciate your participation and support. We hope to work with you again next Tuesday evening. 73 Doug K7KY

NBEMS Software: FLDIGI, FLMSG, FLAMP. Dave W1HKJ, Developer

ORCA is a DIRECTED net, dedicated to learning and developing
digital operating skills and practicing NBEMS traffic handling.
ORCA connects Amateur Operators with common interest in
training, information-sharing, and mutual-aid.
Practice makes perfect!

New to ORCA? See: http://orcadigitalnet.com/quick-start/

Following check-in NCS sends:
1) Signal evaluation image (30sec)
2) Rotation list
3) Announcements

FLAMP Exercise:
Open FLAMP before exercise begins.
Stay focused. Exercise is interactive and brisk.

Traffic Round: NCS calls stations in rotation. No
practice traffic? Send ‘QRU’. All traffic is sent
to NCS; only NCS REPORTS/FILLS. NCS can fill
Traffic Round messages after net.

Comment Round: RX reports, observations, questions,
comments (keyboard or FLMSG BLANK Form as you like)

FLDIGI CONFIG:
LOCK: Cursor @ 1500
ENABLE: RxID
DISABLE: TxID, end-of-Tx-ID, Mode-ID

ANNOUNCEMENTS 04/Feb/2020

Tonight’s FLAMP exercise distributes the file, ‘ex155.txt’, an FLDIGI/FLMSG/
FLAMP exercise. If you complete the OPTIONAL exercise within, send that
file to NCS in the Traffic Round with FLAMP.

Note: FLAMP Optional Exercise questions are included to help ward off boredom.
Our main agenda is engaging as many of the NBEMS tools as we can. The questions
are as relevant as we can make them, but they aren’t important to the exercise.

Last Thurs, fourteen stations checked into the Western Digital Net Roundtable.
That was our last planning session before the net goes live this Thursday evening,
06feb20, 3.581, 1930p/0330z. Please join these twenty Founding Members for the
first session of Western Digital Net:

K6ETA Steve NCS, W7ZAP Mindy, K7KY Doug, KI7TPD Fred, WA7HHE Brad , KA7FOO Doug
N7SND Larry, KG7D Greg, KE6SLS Jaye, W6DLW Dennis, W1EEP Gene, K7DV Dave,
KB7VX Bruce, W7WSV Steve, KN7EIF Bo, AB6JR Ken, KG7VVN Bruno, W5CLE Charles
KJ7BHK Brian, KG5DGI Ed

We can make running WDN a bit easier for Steve by carefully parsing his ck-in
request:

CALL Name [Priority | QRU | QST | (#)TFC for CALLSIGN | Relay]

Notice in particular what he’s not asking for: QTH, Maidenhead Locator, wx
report, etc. Send ONLY what he requests and put it on a single line. One ck-in
macro does not work for all digital nets. Individual NCS may ask for different
information. Read the Preamble or Ck-In text carefully and send what they want.
Make a different Ck-In Macro for each net. Careful parsing, brief and concise
text, and conservation of bandwidth is fundamental to radio communications.

THOR, like MFSK, has full-time Forward Error Correction (FEC). We’ve had good
results with THOR and it too transmits images and Avatars when set to 11, 16,
or 22 baud.

Cold, rain and snow this morning, temps in upper twenties here in Chehalis, Washington State. Pruning the fruit trees and vines in the cold and mud, smiling all the way.

Great band conditions tonight. Everyone readable here, most stations 20 over S9. 100% copy all FLAMP traffice.

Anyway, I have Diana KI7GVY here with me tonight. Were trying to answer some questions that came from her working alone last week. I’m sure she will be ready and on the ball next week. Opps, say’s she’s going to miss nexte week, week after that she’ll be back.

Always a fun and interesting net. Thank you!

:mg:618 Update on the new Western Digital Net (WDN)

The net has firmed up its mission, ironed out relays into the NTSD system and is currently working on macros and conventions.

Once all the conventions are established, a website will follow.

As Doug kindly reminded everyone, the format for check ins differs a bit from ORCA. We use the ORCA conventions for pre-tune (to prevent doubles) and then use Video ID and/or KBD to send the following:

CALL Name [Priority | QRU | QST | (#)TFK for CALLSIGN | Relay]

We greatly appreciate the ORCA Net support and all the ops that are making this thing real.

BTN < K6ETA

FB Steve I wanted to let the crew know that you are creating a similar roster to ORCA and it takes a bit more doing than just listing callsigns.. when Ops send multiple lines for ck-in it really slows us down we have to wait for the TX to stop b4 we can begin cpy/paste… the info on a single line is most helpful to NCS tnx to every one for helping to manage the nets BK Next 4 Comments is Mindy W7ZAP < NCS
