*Stations called for COMMENTS only

Thanks for your patience tonight. The net was long and the SATERN Nationwide Digital Exercise following the net ran even later. We were fortunate to have better than average band condx. We’ve been anticipating this event for weeks and it’s off with a solid start. I wouldn’t be surprised to learn the message reaches New York by Wednesday morning. Thanks for your interest and support; we may learn valuable NBEMS tactics and develop links with other digital Operators.

Ck-in tonight was textbook perfect. Thanks for your attention and focus; not one station coat-tailed or doubled another. Ck-in was smooth and easy for NCS. We began taking Earlies sooner than usual, anticipating a larger Roster with the SATERN Nationwide Digital Exercise scheduled after the net. Thanks for making ORCA easier to manage.

Some background to the weekly FLAMP Exercise.  The original Exercise was simply copying a short text file with no significant content to practice using NBEMS tools and features. Stations REPORTED missing blocks or CONFIRMED 100% reception of the file. That was the entire Exercise. Later, we added an OPTIONAL Exercise to the original. The OPTIONAL is significantly more difficult; you need to work in FLDIGI, FLMSG, FLAMP, the PC File Manager, and sometimes, the PC Text Editor, to create and transmit a completely new file. It’s very challenging at first and takes some time for most Ops to master.

A prime objective of the OPTIONAL Exercise is learning to work multiple apps simultaneously while remaining focused on net flow. Primarily, you remain focused on your place in the Roster and are prepared to respond to NCS when called. It’s a learning process and takes most of us a a few sessions to master. If you’re working an actual Emergency Net, NCS will not be pleased when you’re not prepared when called; meshing with the net is fundamental to processing your traffic.

The OPTIONAL Exercise also creates traffic for the Traffic round when you can complete it before the Traffic Round. When you can’t finish before the Traffic Round, you should send QRU or another brief practice file. If you’ve not finished the OPTIONAL Exercise when you’re called for Traffic, send QRU.  Calling you again later undermines the purpose of the Exercise and slows the net. We’ve lots to do in a short time; we focus on what works well for most members. The OPTIONAL Exercise file can be used in any ORCA Traffic Round; it doesn’t need to be this session.

Every station working these Exercises has made-their-bones, so to speak.  They’ve learned to keep their place in the net while working other complex tasks and be ready to respond to NCS. It just takes a little time and practice. While you’re learning to work the OPTIONAL Exercise, don’t ck-in early; ck-in after NCS has a few active Ops on the Roster. You’ll have more time to work the Exercise.

Hat’s off to Ed KG5DGI for excellent Relay work for the SATERN Nationwide Digital Exercise. He was able to CONFIRM Rick K0KEX in Springfield,MO and Dave K7DV in Idaho Falls,ID. Solid Relay work, Ed. TU! And, Thanks to all of you for your enthusiasm and support for SATERN Nationwide Digital Exercise.  It’s really interesting and should generate useful data, possibly leading to alternate methods of moving NBEMS traffic w/o support by other systems.

ORCA DIGITAL NET Welcomes Richard KK6RJR in Bakersfield,CA. Richard also Relayed information about Joe N0LSD, the SATERN Exercise target station in New York,NY.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Tonight’s FLAMP Exercise distributes the file, ‘ex181.txt’, an FLDIGI/FLMSG/FLAMP
Exercise. If you complete the OPTIONAL exercise within, send that file to NCS in
the Traffic Round with FLAMP.

We’re ready to kick-off the SATERN Nationwide Digital Exercise this evening. Doug K7KY
will send the initial ICS-213 message after we close the net. The band should be better by
then; copy the message and see if you can move it Eastward. Here’s the Exercise URL again:
https://qso.com/satern/exercise.html

The Exercise begins with a single IC-213 message sent by Doug K7KY in Oregon to Joe N0LSD
in New York. It will cross the country by relay between individual digital Operators using only
NBEMS software. Each Relay station will record RX information on the Responder tab. We don’t
alter the Originator tab. When Joe receives the message, he’ll send an HTML copy to Ken AD5XJ.
Next, we’ll repeat the process from East to West.

Doug will send an ‘Exercise Tip’ msg during Traffic. We’ll answer SATERN Exercise questions
during the Comment Round.

Thanks for emailing the Signal Evaluation images to: ncs@orcadigitalnet.com We appreciate
your time and effort.

Good evening to the ORCA Net!

First thanks to Jaye, KE6SLS who was NCS for the WDN last week! I look forward to hearing how that went.

Second, I do have a question about the SATERN excercise: Are we ONLY filling out our audit trail in the Message pane or will we be adding dates signatures to the form

as it was intended by the ICS-213 form design? It seems to me we are only adding our audit trail and NOT using the ICS form as intended?

I would like Western Digital Net stations to continue to relay Doug’s message as it is well within our stated mission to do so! More on that this Thursday!

Thanks to Doug K7KY for being so supportive of our NBEMS capabilities!!!

It has been an interesting week. I am getting a Zoom presentation set up for next weeks radio club (on the air and virtual) meeting. Our presenter is going to talk

about 2 meter SSB.

We are starting to get ready for the Fall semester at SUU. It is a bit scary right now. We are slated for Face to Face, but they are expecting COVID-19 cases from

day one. I just hope we can keep our students, staff and faculty healthy…

Hope everyone is doing well. The SATURN excercise looks interesting!

73s everyone!

Good luck Fred… that sounds like a challenge.

W7ZAP NCS, K7KY < WA7HHE, DOUG, a question on the ICS 213 Saturn C-C XFR. Are there going to be any prelim tests say with “regional cluster stations” to get a feel for

propagation region to region? Also on the Saturn Sked mentions illustrated/suggested Bands Freq and Time of Day and indicates LOCAL time of day. Has this been

addressed? < Best- Brad WA7HHE

Before RSID: <<2020-08-05T03:27Z MFSK-32 @ 1499>>
WA7HHE < K7KY Brad no preliminary testing is scheduled… i think the idea is to put the task to the Ops and see hw they do the sked is just a suggestion

developed by Ken AD5XJ and likely reflects East Coast usage, but I would check these freqs/times to see if anyone is monitoring them…. Ken has asked SATERN Ops to at

least monitor 20m 14.065 the SATERN freq btn < K7KY

will see you all on the waterfall next week. Doug – for the excercise, finding someone to pass the form to could be difficult – are we allowed to set up our own

schedule online with another – so we can both on the radio and then pass it at that point? or are we just going to find a station lurking that can take the traffic?

Big net and pretty darned good signals. I am only half here. We are conducting an OTA Humboldt Amateur Radio Club meeting! I am NOT a good multitasker! heeheee

Wow, so far, 100% copy on all stations. What a nice break from NOISE!

Marine layer never gave up here. But it was still a very comfortable day with about 70 degrees as a high, currently 64 here near Lake MyrtleTown :) So much going on with our club and here at my shack! Sure glad we have such an active and wonderful members in our clubs!

Saturn exercise, I’d love to make contact with a UTAH station for a RELAY from the extreme west coast that can contact and RELAY a message east. I AM AVAILABLE

ke6sls@arrl.net I think we all feel a little intimidated about this, but also very excited!

I would sure appreciate signal reports from the UTAH stations. I hope to increase my antenna and would love to have some comparisons!

What great band condx 2nite. Thank you all for being a part of the ORCA digital net!

Please be safe out there. Look for you on the WDN*.

WDN I was aNCS for the WDN last week. By gosh, we have some activity. Had some big messages and we managed to fill all stations! I did use my amp, ran around 500 watts hoping I could be heard south and to the east. We also used some good relay tactics picked up here on the ORCA DN. Good work and thanks all for putting up with me. It was a LOT OF WORK, but I think it was well worth my effort and time.

< W7SOT doug mentioned the group up on 2500 tonigh – if you a ic-7300 you can make them go away – for those running the IC-7300, if you use the notch filter, you can block out that whole bunch of poeple on 2500, and won’t hear a peeep if you turn on your audio meters put the notch filter on wide, look at your audio meter to see exactly where the notch is and move it right over the top of them by pressing and turning the multi knob, and poof – they are gone!!
