Tonight’s net was challenging for multiple reasons. QRM, doubling, ck-in pile up, unusual ck-in status, and a 33 Op Roster. That said, with 33 stations aboard, the net was exemplary. Nice work all around. I’m always impressed by the skill and discipline of our members. We complete a significant number of complex tasks in a short time every session. That requires skill, focus, and discipline from each of us.  We’re doing an excellent job. The newer stations are learning digital traffic-handling protocols and the importance of Directed Net conventions from our performance.

We had a wide/weak signal at 1500 during the Traffic round, but we managed to continue through it w/o errors. During the Comment Round, there was a digital signal on top of numerous stations. Intentional interference is unusual for us and it may have been unfortunate coincidence. We also experienced a number of doubles during Monitor’s Comments at net-end. These doubles are harder to avoid. At NCS, we usually copy every station, but the individual members don’t always hear every other station. It’s hard to avoid doubling stations we can’t hear. By net-end, we’re all getting tired.  It’s annoying to be doubled or not acknowledged by NCS.  I was getting frustrated myself by net-end.  Not to worry if you’re pre-toning and listening for a clear frequency, it all you can do and thanks for doing you best. We’re all learning.

With 33 stations aboard, ten of them Active, there’s strong potential for doubles when we call for Comments from twenty one Monitoring stations.  We’ll try to reduce this pile-up by calling Monitoring stations grouped by STATE. Fewer stations will be calling at once. Thanks for your patience as the net grows and we adjust our routines.

During the Comment Round confusion, an anonymous Op sent, “pls leave gaps iun in transmissions too, thnx”. This is a valid request in most situations.  We do try to leave space between transmissions during most of the net and we sometimes forget this under pressure. Point taken. When we’re working a station, it’s in our interest to minimize time between TXs; please don’t jump in until the we finish with the current station. All interjections to the net need ID.

Checking In with *(K7KY*) may need clarification. We established this ck-in category when our Rosters became too large to conduct the FLAMP Exercise in a reasonable amount of time.  We enabled ten long-time ORCA Ops to use the * to skip participating in Exercise/Traffic even though they’re logged Active. The * Ops are called as usual for Comments. These stations volunteered to help us manage the FLAMP Exercise by opting out occasionally to leave time for newer Ops.  The FLAMP Exercise is limited to <10 Ops. Bill K6QOG dubbed the * a ‘Star’; I like that (-:

Comments from the net:

“Thanks for the training and demonstrating the value of discipline in digital communications. Learning more here than anywhere else. 73’s de K7LDW”. Don K7LDW

Don’s comments are germane to every net member. We present this learning and practice net as a team.  It would not happen otherwise. Thanks for giving your best every Tuesday evening. Your precise participation enables others to learn effective digital-networking skills and routines.

“After a few weeks of hammering out the Western Digital Net, it has become abundantly clear that well-trained ops (mostly ORCA vets) make running a functional traffic net not only possible, but a pleasure! Already the WDN is passing actual priority traffic about COVID19, WX etc. — and it is reaching people who have nothing other than battery power, an xverter and some wire. The only reason WDN exists is because ORCA Ops have done the work to make it happen. Hats off to Doug K7KY, Mindy, W7ZAP and all ORCA ops! Please participate in ORCA until u are ready to ‘go live’ for the amateur radio community on Thursdays at 1930 PST (330 zulu) on this frequency 1500 WF. Pse check http://westerndigitalnet.org to get started!” Steve K6ETA

Steve K6ETA has taken on a major task with Western Digital Net. It’s exactly what ORCA Ops needed; a place to put their training and expertise to work. Thanks for supporting Steve and WDN! It’s an idea who’s time has come.

ORCA DIGITAL NET Welcomes Jeff KN6Y in Santa Rosa,CA, John KE8CYC in Diamondale,MI, David AE7LM in Hailey,ID, and David KG7FGT in ZigZag,OR. We’ll ask these Ops to check ‘in&out’ for a few sessions to learn net routines. Check-in Active when you’re ready. Don’t fret about errors; we all make errors while learning. It happens for Mindy W7ZAP and I nearly every session.

Where ever you get news and information, please keep and open mind and sift the news carefully.  Nearly every State/Civic Agency has been behind the curve in responding to the Coronavirus outbreak. Don’t wait for Official assessments, they often serve multiple agendas; be proactive and protect your health.  Much better to err on the side of caution and prudence. The Amateur Community has a preponderance of older Ops.  We’re more susceptible and more threatened by this virus. Guard you health, it’s your most valuable possession. Should you fall ill through carelessness or lack of initiative, you may risk your life, the health of your family, and further overload medical resources.

Thanks for your patience and discipline tonight.  We did well with a large Roster and a little QRM. Remember the WESTERN DIGITAL NET on Thursday, 1930p/0330z, 3.581+1500, MFSK-32, Steve K6ETA NCS. WDN will be a good place to find current Coronavirus information. Stay home. Stay healthy.  73 Doug K7KY

ANNOUNCEMENTS 03/Mar/2020

Tonight’s FLAMP exercise distributes the file, ‘ex159.txt’, an FLDIGI/PC-EDITOR/
FLAMP exercise. If you complete the OPTIONAL exercise within, send that file to
NI Traffic Round with FLAMP.

The Coronavirus infection seems to be expanding rapidly in America. Don’t wait
for an Official to tell you when to take this seriously. This is an instance of,
‘better safe than sorry’. Should you become infected, you’ll be a burden and
hazard to those you want to protect; you’ll then require their support and
significantly increase their risk. If infection expands here as it has in China,
Italy, and Iran, we should prepare now, before it reaches our communities. Make
a plan and implement it. If it turns out unnecessary, you’ll be inconvenienced,
but not harmed. Without testing, we cannot tell who is infected until they show
symptoms. The incubation phase can be as long as 28 days. Infected people are
contagious, even when they still feel well.

Our best protection is eliminating as many social contacts as possible. Stay home.
Eliminate or reduce social encounters. Some of our radio friends are still
planning/holding meetings and events. With an incubation period as long as 28days,
we don’t know who may be infected w/o testing. If these thoughts seem extreme
or panicky, dismiss them. Hopefully, I’m wrong and it’s just another pesky flu.

The WESTERN DIGITAL NET is doing well and beginning to attract non-ORCA stations.
Don’t forget to check-in this Thursday evening, 1930p/0330z. Early Ck-In around
1900p/0300z, 3.581+1500, MFSK-32, Steve K6ETA NCS.

Next Sunday will be time to save daylight again. Remember to, ‘Spring Forward’.

After a few weeks of hammering out the Western Digital Net, it has become abundantly clear that well-trained ops (mostly ORCA vets) make running a functional traffic net not only possible, but a pleasure! Already the WDN is passing actual priority traffic about COVID19, WX etc. — and it is reaching people who have nothing other than battery power, an xverter and some wire

Pse check http://westerndigitalnet.org to get started!

All the best and keep up the GREAT work here on ORCA! < K6ETA

Good net tonight!

Scary times with the Covid-19. Keeping an eye on the reports and we keep getting updates, but at this point no closures here. Spring Break is coming up in a couple of weeks so that might be a time when we could get the virus moving in as students go home for a week… We also have graduation in April and people come in from all around the world. Some Universities have canceled graduations in Europe to limit the spread. Could happen here as well…

I will be on the WDN this week! So see you then!

Next week is our monthly Rainbow Canyons Radio Club meeting so I will not be on the net.

73s everyone!

K7KY < K6QOG Sorry I missed the star next to my call on the roster.
Most stations were good print here. I needed the exercise thanks!
I normally use FLMSG to edit text and then put in FLAMP.
The pic was the best copy I’ve ever received, no noise.
I hope everyone has a good and safe week. > K6QOG <RX>

Sorry no signal reports tonight… you guys have us on our toes tonite!!

Whew! Doug did an outstanding job at ck-in… that was a workout! And 4 new stns… ORCA welcomes Jeff KN6Y in Santa Rosa, CA, John KE8CYC in Diamondale, MI, David AE7LM in Hailey, ID, and David KG7FGT in Welches, OR. Great to see so many new Ops ck-in. To the new stns… pse send email to ncs@orcadigitalnet.com if you want to be added to the ORCA mailing list (mostly a weekly email when Net Report is posted online).

The current Coronavirus situation presents an opportunity to think ‘outside of the box’ for local radio clubs. It may be a good motivator to get Ops on the air practicing communications by getting together on-the-air instead of in person. Today the CDC are advising senior citizens at risk of contracting coronavirus to stay home and avoid in-person interaction. In a call to reporters on Tuesday, Dr Nancy Messonnier, director of the CDC’s National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases, said the elderly are most at risk because of their ages and pre-existing conditions.

How often do you have Roundtable nets locally? Ever hold an on-air-meeting? Good time to consider how the Coronavirus might possibly effect local EMCOMM (other than possibility of less Ops available due to illness)?

Great to see all stns on the WF tonite. Stay safe and stay healthy!
73,
Mindy W7ZAP

Shortwave Radiogram transmits digital text and images on an analog shortwave broadcast transmitter. The program is produced and presented by Dr. Kim Andrew Elliott KD9XB. Shortwave Radiogram continues VOA Radiogram's tradition testing new modes and is an interesting source for Digital Ops wishing to practice more with FLDIGI & FLAMP.
