It’s always impressive to run ORCA check-in after we’ve checked into the Oregon Emergency Net @ 0200z on 3.980. Condx for Phone nets have been very tough, requiring numerous and often marginal relays. Digital operations are nearly always much easier than Phone. Thanks for continuing to support ORCA during Solar Minimum. Should band condx improve as we hope, this experience will certainly enhance our skills.

ORCA welcomes a new station, Eric N6SPP in Pittsburg,CA. Bruce KB7VX has resolved the speed issue with Winlink VARA. Tom KF7RSF assisted Bruce in resolving a radio setting that limited VARA’s speed. Tom operates a Gateway and has deep knowledge of Winlink operations. He helped Mindy and I learn enough about Winlink in two days to simulate our County EOC for a SET exercise. The next Oregon SET, Tom developed himself; he’s a valuable digital resource.

Please read the new ‘Net Tools’ section for clarity. There’s a few small details not mentioned; they’re things you already do in the normal course of a net. We’re hoping to help members become comfortable with running digital nets when a regular NCS is not available. The check-in roster underlies all net operations; logging it correctly is key to an organized and efficient net.

Tonight, I copied KB7VX in the RX buffer before beginning Early Ck-In. Bruce may have decided the band would not support him and didn’t check-in. I had him on the roster as Active and didn’t notice the error until the FLAMP exercise. Following the net, I read Bruce’s email and added him back, in&out. The roster often changes as the net progresses. When an Active station checks in Late, we resend the Roster. When a Monitoring stations checks in Late, there’s no need to resend. We don’t engage those stations.

We’d like to return to working with images on occasion. There was a time we used images for the Traffic round, but it began to take way too long. Color images in particular take a long time. We’re trying to get the most practice we can in a reasonable amount of time. We like the nets to conclude in an hour and no longer than 1.5hr. Images are important to emergency communications and we need to practice processing them. An image, although slow to process, may convey more information than a written description. We’re thinking to work again with maps and send them immediately after net, freeing those who want to sign off. If images are important to operations, we want to be prepared to process them in an efficient mode and speed, no matter the time requirement. A slow-to-process image may be better communications than an even longer written explanation.

Thanks for your focus and attention. Your regular participation is an important element in ORCA’s learning environment. New Ops and Monitors are learning by watching you work the net. Learning digital net protocols will eventually effect the wider digital community, teaching efficient digital strategies and tactics, and fostering good netiquette. Looking for you again next Tuesday evening… 73 Doug K7KY

ANNOUNCEMENTS 03/Dec/2019

Tonight’s FLAMP exercise distributes the file, ‘ex148.txt’, an FLDIGI/FLMSG/
FLAMP exercise. If you complete the OPTIONAL exercise within, send that file to
NCS in the Traffic round with FLAMP, tonight or any session.

The, ‘NCS TOOLS’ section of the website is shaping up. It presents Check-In practice
in two Phases. Phase One is practice with Highlight/Copy/Paste, a fundamental PC
routine in Linux, Windows, and Mac. This will prepare you to take digital net check-
ins using the FLDIGI Logger and a FLMSG Blank form.

Phase Two provides our log file, ‘ORCA_logbook.adif’ and two Check-In macros. You can
practice taking Check-Ins on VHF/HF digital training nets using the same system we use
every week for ORCA DIGITAl NET.

If you usually check in&out or Monitor w/o checking in, please send your reception
report, comments, and Test images with Call/Name/Location to: ncs@orcadigitalnet.com

Based in part on what I’ve read elsewhere, I think the headline is misleading; the story itself says “[B. Don] Russell, a distinguished professor for Texas A&M

University, helped develop the technology as part of the Power System Automation Laboratory” and “Prior to going on the market, Russell said the tech underwent 20

years of testing by 15 Texas utilities.” Doesn’t look to me like any of California’s utilities has “created” it.

K7KY de W7LUX I handled many hundreds of digital and voice radiograms while working with the AZ traffic net. K

W7LUX < K7KY FB Joe good to hear.. we will need people with more expertice than Mindy & I we’ve done a little of traffic handling on the Beaver State Net, but

nothing extensive I think it’s time to get handy with the RadioGrams we might be doing a lot of H&W traffic btu < K7KY

hey Doug. just got home. looks like I copied a lot of FLamps. I’ll send in any images I might have copied in a bit. Tnx to whoever managed to RELAY me in tonight!

de ke6sls k

KE6SLS < K7KY Ur relay was Mindy & I we copied your tx in the rx buffer when we began I made the mistake of including Bruce KB7VX bcuz I saw him call you, but he

didn’t actually come and I had to revise the roster mid-net.. we had a great net tonite Jaye sri you were away but you’ll read the net report 22 ck-ins and it went

very well a few doubles but not too unusual for a training net in tough band condx btu < K7KY

fantastic. Glad the net went well. phone net yesterday was very tough as well as my digi net. However, I called the WCC net at 9pm and worked until 11:17pm last

night with lots of calls. Love it when I get better condx for NCS nights!

my tower did GREAT in all the wind storms, two roofs were ripped off right behind me, it was massive storm. was going to send report last week, but band was terrible

so IN/OUT myself. Hopefully u didn’t loose any antennas or roofs or trees. Oh yeah, Yesterday, they finally got a bunch more power restored in our area, that is

almost 10 days w/o power for those poor folks. crazy.
btu om
de ke6sls k

Wow! I didn’t know people were w/o pwr for so long… antennas hre are fine the counterweights were really dancing I’ve not seen them hit the ground and bounce up

10-12’ but, the wire stayed in the air and mostly branches fell, but no trees on our place yet… the roof was ripped off Ace Hardware in Crescent City, but damage

was worse there than in Brookings they faced the strom across the bay, we were shielded by the coastal foot hills, I think btu < K7KY

that’s great o9m. Yeah, a little hill side and some trees can really help reduce the blunt force of that type of wind. it was awesome however to hear/see sustained

gusts of over one minute, I guess that is why they called it a bomb cyclone, but the real word is longer that the wx guys originally used. will I still have to work

on tower, the noise made by wind shooting through it radiates into my house and makes a hell of a noise, I have a plan to isolate most of it with a rubber cushion,

will experiment and see if that reduces it. But if not, oh well, it’s solid as a rock, just noisy!

don’t wanna hold u up if ur ready for dinner om. just wanted to thank you for getting me in, couldn’t stay any longer for our club meet.

btu
de ke6sls k

RR Jaye I’m glad you popped by after ARC. Your tower is actually a bellweather (-: you’ll k now when the wx is spinning up OK I do need a bite to eat and it’s

getting late for eating… good to cu take care ttus 73 Doug K7KY

heehee, it really IS a bellweather! I’ll remember that! 73 om and keep warm, Hi to Mindy.

SHORTWAVE RADIOGRAM

Shortwave Radiogram transmits digital text and images on an analog shortwave broadcast transmitter. The program is produced and presented by Dr. Kim Andrew Elliott KD9XB. Shortwave Radiogram continues VOA Radiogram's tradition testing new modes and is an interesting source for Digital Ops wishing to practice more with FLDIGI & FLAMP.
