ORCA DIGITAL NET, Report 02/June/15

Check-ins: 6
Traffic:      5
Keyboard: 1
Monitor:    ?

Stations:
K7IFG       Ken    T (flamp)
KR5RR    JB       Kbd
KI6RIT      Nick    T
W7ZAP   Mindy  T2
KE7NVX Mike    T (flamp)
K7KY  Doug  NCS

Again the net was small, but fun and productive.  The small nets are a bit more engaging for members, I think.  There’s more active time and less waiting.  I really appreciate the logging aspect of digital radio.  You can leave the station for a few minutes and catch up with net-flow by scrolling up the log.  And, review the entire net after the session if you like.  I often see things I missed during net when I review the log.  As NCS, I can attend to net-housekeeping chores and still be current with net-flow. Most of the time, anyway.  I do fall a little behind now and then.

We missed our Humboldt members this net as they have their monthly ARC meetings on first Tuesdays.  Ken K7IFG sent a flamp message that was well copied.  Only one stations missed a block.  Ken also gave us some information about copying WEFAX with fldigi (see sked below).  A late-net drop in was Mike KE7NVX in Maricopa, CA who had been monitoring us and checked in and sent an flamp message that was copied 100% by all.  JB KR5RR was on keyboard tonight; he’s been revising his digital-station setup.

After traffic rounds, Nick KI6RIT sent the grayscale ORCA logo.  It was the first time Mindy and I received the image from afar.  With our antennas only 70’ apart, we copy the image perfectly from each other.  I think Nick sent the image using the new VIDEO macro tag.  I hope more members will experiment with macros.  They can greatly reduce redundant networking tasks.  I begin and end most net transmissions by macro and type content in the TX window.

 ORCA1  ORCA2  ORCA3
First image KI6RIT > KR5RR
KI6RIT = Mendocino Co,CA
KR5RR = Solano,CA
Second image: KI6RIT > K7KY
K7KY = Curry Co,OR
Third image: KI6RIT > W7ZAP
W7ZAP = Curry Co,OR

Interesting to see the difference in the 2nd & 3rd images, both decoded in Brookings,OR at the same QTH.  Mindy’s doublet more favors South than mine and her image has a little less noise.  We learned image evaluation from VOA Radiograms.

Nick’s earlier traffic concerned the Mendocino Monster bike ride his club is supporting next weekend.  He hopes for an opportunity to ride one of the routes before going to work on communications.  I was a little green when reading Nick’s message as I’ve been an avid bike-guy most of my life.  Mindy still rides MtBikes.

Thank you for taking the time to participate tonight.  Your presence is a contribution and we all benefit from those who’ve taken time to learn other aspects of digital radio and share them on the net.  I hope to see you all again next Tuesday.

Tonight we’ll run our regular traffic practice net.  Relay  & flamp are always optional.  Let me know.

Most ORCA members have flamp installed and working now.  It will be an important asset for noisy band

conditions and long messages.

Tonight, I’m operating from my laptop with fldigi files on a thumbdrive.  Everything powered by the radio

battery bank.

ORCA DIGITAL NET has members in these counties:

OR: Curry, Clackamas, & Washington

CA: Del Norte, Humboldt, Mendocino, Alameda, & Solano

:mg:728 This weekend, our club will be helping out with the Mendocino Monster bike ride. If we end up having

enough people to cover rest stops and SAG duties in the morning, I may ride the short route (~25 miles) before

putting on my “ham hat”. I’m really looking forward to it, it’s always a fun, fairly low-key event with beautiful

scenery.

More info if anyone is interested: http://www.mendocinomonster.com

Last week, after the net, I set up two instances of fldigi on the laptop we have set up here in the EOC – one for

a plain setup for other hams to use if the EOC ends up being activated, and one tailored for ORCA use. Once I

figured out the shortcut switches to manually point to config files, it worked. Now for macros… :)

:mg:391

Finally got around to installing the FLDIGI suite on a thumbdrive along with our much used macros… testing it

tonite. Seems like a handy ‘tool’ to have available for times when you may use a different pc to interface with

your radio in the field.

Easy to follow instructions available in the online FLDIGI Manual:

Oh.

I am using a different disk drive in my lapttop. Didn’t notice until net time and too late to change.

I’ll get it right some day.

ALL ORCA Well, the net is turning out a bit better than I expected.  Good thing there’s not too many of us

tonight.  Typing on the laptop is not as easy as the desktop and I didn’t think much about that when I was

configuring the thumbdrive and such for tonight.

I’m wondering what kind of bike race?  road/mt bike?  I wish I could try it myself.

JB, I think you hit the right solution with the Jpole…   OK   anymore comments or anyone want to send another

It’s a road event, regular ride with no timing, so not as stressful as a race (I’ve helped with those as well,

whew!). On my own bike, I’ve gone about 80 miles since Memorial Day.

I can try sending the ORCA image if you want.
