Anticipating difficult condx on 80m, we cancelled the OFDM Shoot-Out. As it turned out, condx tonight are actually favorable for OFDM & PSK-R. We’ll reschedule the Shoot-Out. Overall, HF condx are steadily improving. We logged Steve WY7SJM in Casper,WY, Mark KA7ULD in Helena,MT, and Rick K0KEX in Smithville,MO. Hats-Off to these guys, one and two time zones away with a difficult path to NCS. We appreciate their interest and support.

The NBEMS Exercise was unusual tonight because we chose modes for a tough band. With favorable band condx, six of seven stations confirmed the first pass in THOR-50×1. If Fred KI7TPD’s computer hadn’t choked, it would have been a slam-dunk for THOR-50×1. Tonight was the perfect time to compare OFDM with PSK-R modes. We initially thought to run the OFDM Shoot-Out next week, but learning that the Rainbow Canyons ARC is meeting next week, we’ll hold the Shoot-Out until the following week, 16/Nov/21. Our Utah colleagues are often 30-40% of the Roster. Two weeks ago, they were 85% of the NBEMS Exercise. They wouldn’t want to miss the OFDM Shoot-Out.

Bruce KX7VX checked in /P from Mt Shasta,CA on his way to Missouri. As a traveling medical technician, he’s really mastered HF field antennas. Missouri will be a challenge. We have four or five members in the KS/MO area that ck-in when condx permit. Winter condx should improve our path to KS/MO. Bruce may be able to work the Buckeye Digital Net. Buckeye is a long established CW & Phone net; last year, they added a digital net.

We CONFIRMED the NBEMS Advanced Exercise for one station in the after-net Monitor’s Session. The after-net session is working well and helps keep the main net to an hour or less. Thanks for your positive feedback and support. We really enjoy working with all of you.

The first Thursday every month is Western Digital Net’s ‘Newcomer’s Net’. It’s structured to explain/explore aspects of digital operations for incoming Ops. Steve K6ETA is a seasoned and helpful Net Control Station. WDN membership is friendly and supportive. You can also learn Net Control in small easy steps by calling the Comment Round. The Comment Round is easy to run. It’s an interesting and relaxed part of running the Net. Steve will prepare you to succeed and enjoy yourself. Give it a try; you never know when even a little experience as NCS will ease your path.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

OFDM Shoot-Out: Our apology for last-minute change of format. The solar flare is really hampering HF conditions. We had to decide b4 net if band condx were sufficient to run a meaningful Mode Shoot-Out w/OFDM. The first OFDM Shoot-Out is rescheduled for next session. OFDM and PSK-R need favorable HF condx.

OFDM is more closely related to the PSK modes than the modes we use most often on HF. We’ll run two OFDM Shoot-Outs, one based on wordspeed and one on bandwidth.

Tonight, the ADVANCED Exercise involves your PC Text Editor.

Our experimental Macro for Path Evaluation rolled out w/o issue. Eight stations have reported it good-2-go. When most active members have it working, we’ll use it during nets to learn more about pathways between net stations and between net stations and NCS.

The Macro Instructions file and the image ‘ORCAtest.png’, are downloadable from the website sidebar, visible on every page: http://orcadigitalnet.com Download both files; the image was recently renamed. If you don’t have favorite directories/folders for these files, put them on the Desktop where they’re easy to find. Let us know when your macro is working, or you need assistance: ncs@orcadigitalnet.com

Oddly, Macro Instructions have been downloaded 29 times, but the image only 13. This is our standard ORCA test image, recently renamed. The downloadable image is pixel perfect; don’t use a received-on-air image.

Don’t forget Western Digital Net this coming Thursday. The first Tuesday of every month is WDN’s Newcomer’s Net. The perfect session for QNX and Lurking stations to participate or regular ck-ins to try a small portion of NCS duties by calling the Comment round. You’ll join friendly colleagues willing to help you learn digital net protocols, tactics, and conventions.

If you would like email notice when the weekly Net Report is published, or to be removed from the list, email: ncs@orcadigitalnet.com
Net Reports are published weekly on the website at ‘Net Reports’.

Well, band condx were perfect for the Shoot-Out btwn OFDM & PSK-R modes let’s hope we get similar condx next week all stations CONFIRMED btn< K7KY

Funny the band is as good as it is w/all the CME’s and geomagnetic storms. Looks like the band was perfect for a mode shootout, but we couldn’t switch gears quick enough. THOR 50×1 did wonderfully! Wow. Now we’re tempting fate for poor band condx next week… oh well.

Greetings everyone! This is Science week at SUU and we had a great talk on the Jupiter Probe from one of the lead scientists. It was amazing what photos they have and some of the surface features they can see on Jupiter and the surrounding moons.

I was only missing block 1 with the first OFDM, but had FLDIGI crash and lost it all, but got it the next round with the preamble on the third! Lost the paragaph in the reboot as well. Still a good activity!

Next week we will have our monthly meeting so I will not be on the net…

We couldn’t have missed our band prediction by a greater margin. I hope we have similar condx next week for the NBEMS Shoot-Out with PSK-R. Both modes hv FEC and would likely have done well tonight.
