The net was quick & easy tonight. DST, longer Summer days, and monthly ARC meeting combine to reduce ORCA Rosters. With only 3 Active Ops working the NBEMS Exercise, the net was shorter than usual. Condx also limit Ck-Ins from afar. It’s increasingly difficult for Missouri Ops to make Ck-In, but they do have a better chance as the evening unfolds. Using a Loop antenna in Smithville,MO, Rick K0KEX Ck-ed In later in the net tonight and last week too. Hats-Off to the Missouri Ops for tenacious support and participation. They have an unusual measure of patience.

Next session, 09/May/23, we’ll ask two stations in Cedar City, Utah to send the Path Evaluation Macro just prior to Comments. Please email us only those two images. We won’t publish the usual beginning/ending images that week. Cedar City stations are copied better in Missouri than other ORCA stations. As we proceed experimenting with path between stations, we’ll develop useful knowledge about who hears who best. It may save a lot of trial’n error when time is critical.

Do you work Oregon Emergency Net? We recently learned that Ruth K7RFO passed away in February. Ruth was NCS and regular Relay on OEN for 50yrs. She was one of the best NCS we’ve encountered. Mindy & I learned a lot from Ruth. She’s a true Sweetheart and will be deeply missed by everyone on OEN. Godspeed, Ruth.

Off-net-frequency traffic-handling: When we demonstrate this routine, pay close attention to the tactics and communications. Both are simple. Two stations are leaving net-frequency to pass traffic. There are simple exchanges btwn them & NCS. If you work WDN or ORCA in emergency mode, you are likely to pass traffic off-net-freq. Learning this routine now will prepare you for an uptick in formal traffic. It’s not difficult; it’s an extension of the simple routines you already use every ORCA session.

Our transition from Win8.1 to Linux Mint 21.1 is 90% complete on my station, but the last 5% is challenging. Our Toughbook CF-C2 touchscreen tablets don’t do well sharing Audio btwn System & FLDIGI. Usually, it works, but may choke suddenly. I think it’s caused by an active browser sending an Audio alert. I’ve been running FLDIGI with the browser closed, but last night I forgot and opened it to check a callsign. Later, FLDIGI froze. We’re still committed to the change, but I’m getting weary of computer problems.

^r 9aÆ yM ´e-q~$xwF cÿANNOUNCEMENTS

Last week, we announced that Don KJ7VGV would conduct tonight’s NBEMS Exercise, but we forgot Don is out-of-town and Bruno KG7VVN is taking his place. We’ll use the FLMSG ICS-213 form. NBEMS Exercises combine a variety of traffic-handling strategies and tactics with real-time mode & band condx experience. Regular practice embeds and sustains these skills. Exercise questions simulate message content and are occasionally relevant. They’re secondary to traffic-handling routines and tactics.

Working NBEMS Exercises prepares you for emergency and traffic nets. Neither are likely to run at the speed we practice. When you’re comfortable with ORCA NBEMS Exercises, you’ll be well prepared for emergency & traffic nets. Practice doesn’t include every aspect of emergency events, but your experience with traffic-handling fundamentals will underpin your performance. Be prepared. Practice correctly. Practice often. When we practice, others are practicing with us silently. Some use on-line SDRs to copy our nets. Monitors & Lurkers are learning while we practice.

After ORCA DIGITAL NET & Western Digital Net close, it’s not unusual for Lurking Ops to ask for Fills. It’s almost routine for un-logged Ops to have traffic Filled by net members after these nets close. Hats-Off to the members that hang-out a few minutes & Fill monitoring stations. It’s the Amateur way of mutual support. It contributes to expanding the pool of capable Amateur digital Operators.

Relays. We can’t mention the importance of Relays too often. Relays are especially important at Ck-In. We’re always alert for opportunities for Relay practice. When we can, we include Relays in the NBEMS Exercise. The first step of Relaying during nets depends on NCS. NCS needs to develop a mental database of member location & capabilities in order to choose the best Relay for conditions. This takes time, focus, and practice. NCS doesn’t need a CONFIRMED station to Relay FLAMP Fill blocks. Any station with the necessary blocks can Relay them B4 CONFIRMING the file. Most salient is the path btwn Relay & Receiver and their station capabilities.

Later this month, Jaye KE6SLS & Matt N6FPV will demonstrate off-net-frequency traffic-handling. We’ll first publish an outline for the exercise. You’ll encounter this routine on WDN and other Traffic nets when there’s a lot of formal traffic. Emergency nets also use this routine to keep traffic moving briskly w/o tying up the net for each message.

ORCA Rosters are usually larger in Winter and we extend 30min Early Ck-In to 45min. This Winter has been different; we’ve not needed the extra 15min but once. Starting next session, 09/May/23, we’ll return to 30min Early Ck-In @ 1900p/2000m/2100c/0200z.

Next is an NBEMS traffic-handling Exercise w/Bruno KG7VVN < W7ZAP<@TXRSID:on>

Good exercise Bruno. Nice job getting the last blocks thru using MFSK-22. Tough condx (unsettled). PSK-250R
bombed out (here too). THOR-50×1 did better (both Doug & I RX 100%). I always enjoy seeing how modes do in
different condx. DST gives us more practice w/challenging condx.

Here’s the breakdown of RX by modes:
PSK-250R: 0 stns
THOR-50×1: 4 stns
MFSK-32: 0 stns
MFSK-22: 1 stn

With only 3 active stns, this will be a brisk net.

I completed CERT training over this last weekend! Very excited to do that and look forward to joining a newly forming local CERT team. ALSO applied to join the local AUXCOMM, glad to be getting involved in ways that can help the community.

Fixed my power cycling issue on my Icom 746, had to tighten the power pins up to make better contact in the molex style connector.

Apperently I am not hearing well today!

I was fast to get the exercise out but forgot to name it properly :).

73s everyone and see you on the next net.

ORCA < WB7EUX – Ham radio is starting to take a back burner as spring field work begins. I’m trying to finish off two projects started this past winter while I have some free time. I’m enjoying the weather the past few days. However, we have snow in the forecast later in the week.

Lightning is occurring on the border of Washington and Idaho north of Joseph according to the Clime App. The lightning is definitely making itself seen on my scope!

Always a pleasure to seet Rick K0KEX from MO check in. Solid signal despite the lightning.

Thanks to Doug, Mindy, and Bruno for another wonder training opportunity.

All is well. 73 de WB7EUX

ORCA < K7KY I particularly enjoy the 1st Tuesdays w/guest NCS running the NBEMS Exercise. Tonight, my only duties are backing up Net Controls, Mindy W7ZAP, and Bruno KG7VVN conducting the NBEMS Exercise. Very easy compared to a more usual evening when I’d be either NCS or conducting the NBEMS Exercise.

Bruno KG7VVN did an excellent job with the NBEMS Exercise. Although the Exercise is tightly scripted, there can be moments when quick decisions are necessary. You need experience to know what is the best solution. Bruno has mastered the NBEMS Exercise!

Remember, beginning next session, Early Ck-In changes from 45min to 30min: 1900p/2000m/2100c/0200z.

Summer usually brings smaller Rosters. 1st Tuesdays also have smaller Rosters. Rainbows Canyon ARC meets 1st Tuesdays. There have been sessions when RCARC was 1/3 & more of the Roster.
